Tanglewood Golf Club - Championship Course

About
Since Tanglewood Golf Club's Championship Course opened in 1958 it has consistently ranked as one of the top public courses in the U.S. This Robert Trent Jones layout has 99 bunkers. It was designed to test the best golfers in the world and fits Jones' design philosophy of "easy bogey, hard par." RTJ believed the long iron shot separated the championship golfer from the average golfer and created several holes with that in mind. The seventh and 12th holes, both par 3s, play over 230 yards from the back tees. The par-4 11th hole is 490 yards. Fortunately for the recreational golfer, Jones built multiple teeing grounds to Tanglewood's Championship Course enjoyable for all skill levels.

Get out here asap
I have been playing out here for 20 years, I very much consider it my nemesis. I love the layout, I believe it to be one of if not THE most challenging course layout within an hour of the triad when played from the tips. It will require most of the clubs in your bag and right now the greens are as rolling as good as they have been all year, easily on par with some private clubs in the area and for the twilight rate it is an unbelievable deal. I'll be out here every week until its too cold to take a divot without wincing. Kudos to this management team, it's as sharp as its been in years!
Great layout, needs some water
The layout at Tanglewood is one of the best in the Traid and the renovations a couple of years ago are fantastic. However, the course needs some water. The fairways and greens have excellent cover, the greens couldn’t roll any better. But once you get off of the fairways and greens the grass is virtually non-existent especially around the greens. The course is playing far too firm for its design and this is creating bad results for even excellent golf shots. The greens are too firm to hold anything but a perfect shot and the fairways often won’t even hold a perfect drive and with no rough, great drives can easily be punished. Tanglewood is supposed to be a tough test, but it is a tough enough test without ridiculous conditions. It has been dry recently but for $60 a round they can make sure there is some grass around the greens and good shots will hold. A municipal course shouldn’t be set up like a US Open all the time.

It cost nowhere close to $60 a round.
Championship course.
Our group played the course two days after a massive flood. Carts were 90 degrees. The course is elevated and drained well. Greens were super fast and pin placement was tough. The course played short but your approach shot if not pin high could cause a extre stroke. Staff was friendly and the grill was happy to serve you. Club house was clean and the bathrooms were easy to find.
Golf weekend with good riends
First time playing Championship course. Weather was cool and damp first 6 holes but afternoon turned out to be ideal. Course in good condition- greens a little slow but smooth. Need another round to appreciate the layout. Would have appreciated a hole map for better orientation on some holes - do not appreciate blind shots - especially not knowing what was beyond the blind shot. Overall a good day and a good course - want to get back to play again soon. Worth the effort and expense - though the website tee time reservation system was seamless.
Excellent course with great history
I wanted to play Tanglewood because of the history -- the course hosted the 1974 PGA Championship. Lee Trevino won his first PGA Championship, edging Jack by a stroke. Sam Snead tied for third place at the age of 62. So with that known, I was content with that.
But the course was in phenomenal shape at the end of October. According to my playing partner, the greens were "slow" in the morning. They still had some bite to them, however. Very challenging course with plenty of bunkers. Hard to score on the par 5s, and the par 3s can have some length to them. Very enjoyable round. Keep in mind it's a $2 fee to enter the park, so make sure to have some cash on hand and allow yourself a few extra minutes to drive through the service road.
Spectacular!
Played with my wife and son. It was his birthday so I decided to drive the 90 minutes from Charlotte since it was their birthday present from me. I was surprised at the great layout and conditions the course was in. Variety of holes, fast and true greens, and great sand traps. I really appreciate the value this course provided and will play it again when I go to the Charlotte area again. Please play this iconic golf course since it has golf history attached to it by the way of the PGA Championship. This by the way is the most fun I have had playing a golf course recently.
Enjoyed my round!
I played 18 holes on the Tanglewood Championship Course. The greens were in very good shape. Some of the longer Par 4s and Par 5s had some thin grass spots. Overall though, the course was in very good condition.
The practice range was mats only - I'm not a fan of that, however, I was able to warm up. The practice green was in fantastic shape. The course greens were fast and true to the practice green!
The cart was clean and ready to go. I grabbed a hot dog, soda and chips before heading out. The dog was very good - dressed with slaw, onions, catsup and mustard.
The proshot, grill and cart staff were very friendly and helpful. Overall, I had a very good time.
Beautiful Old Country Club Course!!
Outstanding day on the links at Tanglewood Championship. I had never been here and it is beautiful and challenging. They renovated the greens to Bermuda - fast, tough, and fun to play. Reallly rolled well. Very nice layout in excellent condition. Staff was very nice and helpful. I played in under 4 hours with no problem, minimal waiting I drove 40 minutes to get there but it was worth it.
Disappointed with the upkeep
Fun layout. Challenging but not punishing. Ton of potential. Unfortunately, the course is not being kept to its potential. Bunkers hadn't been raked in several days. The sand is nice and fluffy, but you can't get a playable lie. Even with COVID rules, I had trouble finding good sand on which to place the ball. The weeds around the green are getting out of hand. Is anyone in charge of maintenance here?
Good Day
Lots of crabgrass, and it seemed like the rough was cut shorter than the fairways. But overall a good course, awesome layout, great value for the $$. One unexplained oddity...out of bounds on the right on 14, which runs parallel to 15. But the out of bounds is only for golfers coming down 14, not for Golfers going up 15?
its a crying shame they have let conditions get so bad on the Championship course!
