A no-frills challenge
Nothing about Exeter will blow you away. It's simply a strong test of golf from start to finish. It's not easy to walk, but if my playing partners could do it carrying their bags, pushcart warriors like me can, too. The most memorable moment comes when you need to shape a tee shot over or around a covered wooden bridge to avoid the water. It's a short par 4 you could birdie, but par or bogey are the most likely scores.
Good course but rough rough
Fun course, beautiful water on holes. But lacking in amenities for the price. There was no food options when we checked in at 10am on a Sunday. Nice fast greens but the rough was super thick. Really hard to find balls in the rough w/ the sun out.
Plush!!
I hadn't played this course in over 8 years ( over a dozen times) but was hoping it was in great shape as it always had been. It was the best shape I have ever seen it in. Tee area all green grass, fairways plush and greens in perfect shape running about a 10. I was very impressed. Attendant in pro shop very cordial and helpful. Pace of play was great ( 3 3/4 hour round). We were a 2 some following a 2 some and a 4 some. I wholeheartedly recommend Exeter CC for a great round of golf.
Overpriced and Not Worth it.
My girlfriend bought us 18 holes with a cart for $118 on my birthday as a surprise.
Scheduled as 2 for 18. Paid for 2 for 18 and was told to go have fun.
It was very obvious from the start they had a tournament going on when we got to the tee box on time because the fairways we're all freshly divoted all over the place. Not their fault. I get it
What is their fault is that the grass didn't really seem all that trimmed down to what you expect for a nice course. Rough was all very high with a lot of piles of branches all over the edges. Even the greens felt slow because the grass looked like it hadn't been kept trim.
Fun looking course, but around hole 7 we were stopped by a couple employees while we were getting ready to tee off about pace of play and how my girlfriend should be getting on the tee box to hit while I was about to tee off. (Her tee box being directly in front of mine and if I duffed it I would have knocked her out). Also stopping and watching us take every shot on that hole and stopping us again and asking 'weren't we a foursome' which we told them multiple times we weren't. In addition, pace of play wasn't a concern we had for ourselves since we had been waiting for the group in front of us to clear out before we could hit, and on hole 4 had to wait while the groundskeepers fully sanded and dragged the greens holding us up 10 minutes.
On Hole 8, the marshal came back to us after we tee'd off and told us there was another twosome that got out ahead of the foursome in front of us that we were supposed to be paired up with and that's what caused the slowdown. He also made it seem like that was somehow our fault when I hit my first shot right when our tee time was scheduled for and never was told to wait up or pair with another group.
We finished 9 and got a refund for the other 9 which ended up being $42. Nobody ever asked us why. Not the marshal or the guy in the proshop.
Customer service is seriously lacking here. They act like they are bothered by you even wanting to play golf, as if it's an imposition on them, and then the course was mediocre at best. It's sad because it's a beautiful looking course with great potential but I feel it is mismanaged.
Will not be returning
Great layout
All the reviews about damaged greens must be a thing of the past. First time playing the course and the greens, fairways and rough were in excellent shape. I commend the Hendricks on keeping the course in great condition. It was my first time at Exeter and I really enjoyed the round. Plan on going back soon!
Highly recommended!
Used to be one of the best in RI
Had trouble with greens last year. Doesn't look as if much was done to fix problem. Greens were rough and bumpy. Never see much change in pin placement which only worsens green problems. Tee boxes are already chewed up this early into season. Fairways in decent condition. Some trees along fairways need to be trimmed as they stick out almost blocking shots.
Always good
Exeter Country Club is always in great shape. Great layout and the staff is always friendly. Good mix of challenging holes and several risk/reward choices. My only criticism is that you can't make on-line tee times. Sister courses, Meadowbrook and Richmond CC also great choices if you can't get out on Exeter.
