One of America's original treasures
Getting the chance to play Newport CC during the media day for the U.S. Senior Open was an incredible privilege. This whole place just exudes class. The mansion on the hill is a fantastic showpiece for the membership with its tiny locker room upstairs, small pro shop downstairs and a cozy bar off the front door.
The course is a brute with bunkers in virtually every landing zone off the fairway and approaching the greens. It was forecast to be wonderful weather, except the wind and chill moved in, making every shot difficult. The par 3s are the most memorable feature of Newport CC. The pure greens are difficult to read.
Hard to beat Newport CC
Driving up to the clubhouse alone is spectacular. It's a links course and just awesome in so many ways. You start out with a par 5 but there are a couple of long par 4's which make it tough. The conditions were perfect when I played it and I'm sure that's the norm here.
We walked which made it nice as well. A couple of holes have some pretty severe elevation changes which make it tough.
There are a few holes with great views of the water as well. Highly recommend Newport CC if you have the opportunity.
