First Time Playing This Military Course
Yes, the Pines Golf Course is located on an active Military Base...so you just can't walk on (for all of those who didn't realize). It's very easy, though...when you call to make a tee time ask the process for getting a pass to get on the base to play golf. They take your name, birthdate, and drivers license and initiate the check with the base. I called on a Wednesday and picked up my pass on Friday for play on Sunday. Easy! Now for the course...it is a typical "low country/tidal basin" type course--very flat, with lots of pine trees and some sections of marsh. It was in good shape, although not the same as a corporate course with Bermuda fairways and more character and challenge. The fairways were good as were the greens, which were running faster than I thought they would. The bunkers were a little inconsistent, with some wet dirt and others (especially the back nine) were fluffy sand. There weren't many people there (which surprised me), and I waited just about every hole but still played in 3.5 hours. It just seemed longer because of waiting, but it was a beautiful day and I just took my time and enjoyed the day. They had a special for $20, so that was a real bargain. The course is nice to play while in the Williamsburg area--reasonably priced, nicely kept, but takes a little to ensure you'll have access to base.
Military Course
First, I was surprised we could play this course, it being on a military installation. The course is well maintained with a few rough spots here and there. It was fairly empty on a Monday mid-morning, and we played at a good pace for a new course. Back nine is adjacent to helicopter field and there were low flying helos practicing touch and go and hover maneuvers, but it really didn't disturb us much.
Great militarycourse
Was great to play this course the staff is over the top friendly
Great course for the money
We definitely plan on playing here again. Staff was great, very friendly and helpful. Restaurant was "closed until further notice". The course was in good shape and well worth the money. One thing that was surprising was that you have to check in at the guard station and pass a background check before you can go to the course. We didn't realize that the course was actually on the military base. The background check and ID process was no big deal, it just takes 5 or 10 minutes.
Great value
My wife and I had a 10am tee time and got around in about 3.5 hours. Course was in nice shape, except the greens were recently plugged. Very enjoyable. Would definitely play again. Note...it is on an Army Post, so civilians might not be able to get on post unless they are with someone with access.
Canadian citizens beware
We booked our tee time by phone from Canada but upon arrival we were not allowed onto the base. We were sent to an office to get a day pass but because we are not American citizens they were not able to give us one….the security check would take a couple of days.
Fortunately we had not prepaid for our round but had driven 35 minutes to the course and ended up not being allowed to play. So if you are vacationing in the area DO NOT BOOK AT THIS COURSE
Ripoff
I’m from North Carolina and my brother is from New York and booked the time earlier in the week. We didn’t know this course was on a military installation and the military police wouldn’t let us in. They said had to have a military ID or visitors pass and the visitors station was closed. We had to leave immediately so I pulled over and tried to cancel by reservation and the website said I wasn’t eligible for cancellation.. I called the pro shop and they said I should have known, and the information is on the website but that’s not true. There is no way for a person from outside the state to know the requirements. I feel this process is an absolute ripoff.

Course was in good condition considering the recent weather. I was surprised.
First Timer
A beautiful course. Course conditions weren't perfect but very playable.
Views on several holes were worthy of national pictorial coverage.
Will definitely play here next time we're back in Williamsburg.
Uncrowded great day at the course.
Had a 11:40 tee time. Weather was great, mid 50'sFairways are brown this time of year, but are mowed and in good condition. Greens are still in great shape, but evidently most golfers do not repair their ball marks. Office personnel and starter were very friendly and helpful. Will definitely play there again.
Good for the value.
For the dollar value its worth it. No issues with the course. Played all three tracks in less than 5.5 hrs. Not bad...
Surprise
Wonderful test of a not real difficult track with very good greens with a good pace nd true roll.
Great value for $10 - 18 holes w/cart
Great value for $10 - 18 holes w/cart. Be aware that you are entering a US Military base and your vehicle will be checked and inspected!
They have 3, 9-hole courses. Probably a step or two up from a public course. But no frills (no: tees, towels, cart help, and rangers). The first 9-hole course was empty - I was about the only one out. The next 9-hole course was almost empty! Nothing too challenging and mostly flat. Fairways and greens were in good condition. Rough was very deep and with the leaves on the ground I lost 3-4 balls in the deep grass.
Good place to play golf
My first impression was the practice area with manicured tees lush with grass. I could have just stayed there all day...and based on my not so stellar play maybe I should have. All 18 holes I played were in great shape; all of the greens were consistently lush, true and same speed. We never waited on any tee to continue play. All the staff were helpful and friendly. And, big bonus, the clubhouse grill was fast and the food was excellent. Look forward to coming here again.

Good value for the money. Pace of play was very good. Greens and fairways in good condition. Rough was to high.

Good day for golf with sunny skies. Fairways in great shape but greens not very good due to falling mugs infection.
