South Riding Golf Club

About
South Riding Golf Club is nestled in the gentle hills of northern Virginia, enjoying a landscape of hardwood forests and grassy meadows. The course offers a variety of challenges but the fairways are wide and player-friendly and the greens can be tough in spots but overall they offer some room for error. The layout requires both strategy and skill, it is definitely not a golf course where you will be able to just "grip and rip it." The course pinpoints your weaknesses but it is still a fair test. South Riding Golf Club's eighth hole is memorable for its difficulty but it's an interesting hole sine there are many ways to play it. At 351 yards, the hole is a short but intimidating dogleg left that will tempt you to go over the trees. The fairway is generous but the saddle-shaped green is flanked with bunkers.

Course Hole-to-Hole Direction
During the 18 holes, accurate guidance signs are needed at intervals between holes to help you move from one hole to the next hole.
Fast Greens
Course was in great shape and the greens were very fast. We had fun and will be back!
Excellent Conditions -- Huge Improvement
The design/routing has always been good, but two years ago this place was a mess -- the conditions were terrible. Now the condition is great! Fantastic! What a stunning change. I'm guessing a new superintendent and/or more investment in the course? Whatever, it is working. ONE THING: the greens have always been sloped, and now that you have them rolling at a great speed, please be careful about where you put the pins/cups. There are a number of places on each and every green where you simply cannot put pins. Please find those spots on each green and never put pins there -- it really ruins the enjoyment of the round.
Best I’ve played in a while!
Came out for the first time on a Sunday and it was awesome! I’ve played every single course in NOVA and this has to be one of the best. Let me start off with *GRASS DRIVING RANGE* it’s been a long time since I’ve got to hit off grass on the range. From tee box to green the conditions are incredible. The course was fun, not overly challenging, and not too long! Best bang for your buck. Only thing is we waited on the group in front for a while but still managed a 4 hour round. I will come back every hot deal I can get.
Disrespectful Experience with Course Marshall and Members
Here's the summary: if you want to encourage junior or family golfers with a welcoming experience by the staff and the members, South Riding is not the place to play.
We played on a crowded Sunday Morning in perfect weather where the pace of play was expected to be moderate. Our foursome, including my 12 year old son, was hitting up against (not into) the foursome in front of us. We all had some bad shots (as public course goers do) and if there was any risk of my son slowing us down, he'd pick up and play by us near the green.
On the fourth hole, the pair behind us (a member) drove past us to examine the gap in front of us (there wasn't) while we were mid-swings and then returned. No wave, no apology, no courtesy. On the twelfth hole, he signaled for the Marshall to complain about the pace and singled out my son. The Marshall (Joe) then decided to abandon his pace management duty and instead cater to the whims of a member by asking us to pick up pace (by hitting into the foursome ahead?) and singling out my son. This impacted my son's confidence and enjoyment of the round (and our entire foursome). It was rude, disrespectful, and quite discouraging to a junior golfer.
We found ourselves waiting to hit throughout the round and understand that this is part of the game. We still completed our round in a little over four hours. The expectation of a member (in particular of a pair) and a Marshall should have higher standards.
You enjoy the weather and the company and the sport. The picture attached is from the hole right after where we were told to speed up.
Sadly, that is not the experience that you can expect at South Riding. We'll stick to Brambleton, PV, Raspberry, and Whiskey Creek from now on. South Riding can keep to their entitlements and mediocre character.
Challenging but Fare
This course was well groomed. The rough had long grass but it was still possible to find a wayward ball.
Cart paths are rough.
I'll be playing it again soon
