Rain was expected
Over all the course and golf staff were excellent.
We unfortunately could not relax after our round with food and drink . Waited 20 minutes for restaurant staff then left.
Their lose.
VBN summer conditions
Hot and humid conditions with heavy rains the prior evening — but course was well drained and played at a very pleasing fairway & green speed. Challenging but fair requires straight drives to score. Putting was a bit tricky especially if you land at the wrong part of the green. Take half a club less to avoid going over. Back 9 seems tighter and harder. All in all a good round for a ten handicap. Staff was great. Facility is top notch. Must play Pete Dye creation.
Staff is Terrible
I made an account to leave this review. I will preface it by saying that I am a full member at the course and generally try to give everyone the benefit of the doubt. That being said, Glenn at the pro shop has no business working in a pro shop.
Saturday and Sunday mornings frequently find him outside, taking 10-20 min cigar breaks, while golfers trying to check in are waiting.
Yesterday I was out playing a round that I booked on their website when Glenn drove up in a golf cart. The first thing he said to me was "You're done. Your round is over." He told me they had a tournament going on and we couldn't continue to play. I told him that I booked the round online and the guy at the counter let me get out and play. He said he had no idea why they let me do that but I couldn't keep playing. After discussing for a bit he said that holes 2-6 weren't being used by the tournament so we could play those if we liked,
It's not so much what he said but how he said it that really made me angry, like I somehow did something wrong by using their site to book a round.
It's gotten to the point that I just can't stand going to VB National because of Glenn. He's a gruff, noxious old man with no people skills who is ruining the customer experience at a great course. Avoid at all costs if you don't want to deal with a jerk before playing golf.
Great layout and will play again.
A great layout. Course was wet, but in good winter time condition. Course was very busy, but pace of play was good. Played on the VSGA book. Would like to play when not so wet. It was cart path only as it should have been. Starter was very friendly and helpful.
Wonderful experience
Everything about this day was great. Customer service was exceptional with helping get directed and where to go. Course was in great shape and very challenging. As an out of towner I cannot recommend enough.
Fine Pete Dye Course
Solid Pete Dye course that didn’t make it as one of the TPC courses. If you like Pete Dye courses this is worth a play. Conditions CSN be spotty, but the layout and greens are worth a play if in the area.
Slowly decreasing in quality
I have played VB National multiple times over the last 6-7 years, each time i return it looks worse. Tee boxes were dirt, fairways were good and greens are above average compared to other courses in the area. Practice facilities are great, putting green is large, good chipping area for many different shots, and driving range is excellent.
VB National was cheaper than the last few times I have played. It was early April to be fair. If the course conditions were this bad and I had paid their more premier costs that I have in other years, it would've been a much different story. Overall still a good course and one of the better in the area, but slowly declining from my experience at the course.
VB’a best public course
When it comes to price nothing compares to VB National. Course is in GREAT shape and the greens are phenomenal for a public track. 100% recommend.
Wide open, nice greens, bad attitude
Played this course while vacationing here. The course was wide open and few hazards come in play. The lack of shade made the hot day a long one. They did have the beverage cart going around regularly.
Greens were well maintained and ran on the fast side but very consistent. Most tee boxes were in good shape. The course was long enough but didn’t really weave or turn and cause much mental effort. It seemed popular during my weekday tee time with the senior crowd. Practice facilities looked top notch.
I don’t know if this is fair but I got some bad vibes from the pro shop worker and the lady at the bar. The gentleman at the counter seemed to dislike questions about where the first tee was and he really didn’t like splitting the bill up (I paid over half of the cost for our foursome as a gesture and he was irritated at having out the remainder of the bill. Pardon me for giving you a large amount of cash and your having to use a calculator.) it wasn’t customer service oriented.
Awesome layout
I played this course twice in one week. The second time I showed up as a single on Sunday morning (Father's Day) and they worked me in. The layout here is awesome. There is a great variety here. Have to think about your tee shots, but still a few grip it and rip it holes. Greens are rocking and rolling. Super fun and challenging course without beating me up too bad. Plus, it's a First Tee facility so it's all for a good cause. If I was a local I would definitely buy a membership here.
Great play even with freshly airriated greens
The course plays very well and can be downright difficult if you play an errant shot into the wastes or the high grass. Tee boxes were in great shape, however the greens were just airriated last week (I played March 12, 2017) but are still playable, and definitely a birdie is capable if you get your approach shot to with 10. Greens should be at their best within a month or so.
Fine course on a great February day
This is a Pete Dye course, pretty flat, lots of waste areas and water. To me, it's a lot of fun to play, even when I'm not playing well. I was playing pretty poorly this time; the winter rust had worked itself deep, but I had a wonderful time. The weather was perfect -- low 80's, sunny. The course was in fine shape, well tended, except for a few thin bunkers and a couple soggy fairways, but that's really good for February. This course has a nice clubhouse and good practice facilities as well. Electric carts.
A Challenge
This course provides a challenge to anyone regardless of tee box. Layout is not easy on the eye and par 5s are quite long. Several blind shots to the green over hills if not in the fairway. Several waste bunkers. This course will get windy. I should play better during the regular season once landmarks can be better appreciated. Course does not drain well so be prepared for cartpath only in inclement weather.
VB National
A very well conditioned course with an interesting layout. Greens were very fast, almost to fast for the windy weather. One of the best courses around.
Wet, but great shape
I played as a single in the afternoon and completed my round in 2 hours and 15 minutes.
The course was still recovering from flooding the week before when they recorded 16 inches of rain. It was cart path only and two holes were closed due to the rain, but was in decent shap otherwise. A few traps were still under water.
1st time playing course
I'm a 12 handicap 68 y/o playing this course for 1st time. All staff extremely helpful, courteous and welcoming! Course conditions excellent. Greens rolled true and somewhat fast. Can score well if stay in fairway. Rough is deceivingly punishing, at least an extra club, sometimes 2. Overall a fun course not as tricked up as a Pete Dye track can be (thanks to Curtis Strange I suspect). Will play again given opportunity!
Fun course, friendly staff
2nd time playing VBN and another fun day. My one issue with the course is the huge ballmarks all over the greens....fairways excellent, rough brutal, layout is very fun (except maybe the 11th hole)....a special treat is you are almost certain to see one of three bald eagles on the back nine
