Stumpy Lake Golf Course
About
Stumpy Lake Golf Course is a Robert Trent Jones design that provides a unique golfing experience. This scenic layout is routed across a 1,400-acre nature preserve that is absent of any commercial or residential development for miles. The golf course wraps around its namesake lake, which has a canoe and kayak launch as well as a fishing pier. Deer, fox, and eagles are frequently seen on the course and there has even been the occasional bear sighting. Water has a prominent presence throughout and there are also several strategically placed bunkers. Stumpy Lake Golf Course is a layout that will force you to be creative with your shot making but it's still approachable enough for high handicappers to tackle with confidence. If you're looking to get in even more golf, sister club Honey Bee is located almost right next door.

Gorgeous view of Stumpy Lake Photo submitted by Realestateangels on 11/06/2014
Too expensive, wouldn’t recommend
Stumpy Lake Golf Course exhibits stunning natural scenery, but unfortunately falls short in the quality of its greens. The inconsistency and deterioration of the turf seems to not live up to a golfers expectations. However the course potential might still attract you, but one should brace for an underwhelming service experience. The Marshalls attitude, unfortunately, didn’t mirror the environment. His approach being distant and sometimes outright rude felt like a divot in the experience.
Almost Excellent, A lot of potential.
Loved the layout, great course design. No course maintenance, the greens were half dead, and the ground was extremely hard. Wouldn't recommend it for the price.
Wait until greens are repaired.
Mediocre experience for the $. Several greens under HEAVY repair, making them almost unplayable. My group had an early tee time on a holiday weekend with gorgeous weather. I was expecting pace of play to be somewhat slow, but 5.5 hours... There was no Marshall keeping groups moving this day.
The starter was very friendly as well as the rest of the staff. I will be back again but there is definitely better bang for the buck in Virginia Beach.
Interesting and fun, but I have fun anywhere
I enjoyed the course but it certainly had some issues. There were large dead spots on several greens and there was a lot of unkept areas around the course. Sand traps were very wet and firm, likely due to how low of an area this is. It was a fun course to play but I can see the pace being a problem. I was in the second group out so we played quick but they were late to open the course and I saw them stacking several groups to try and catch up. Overall I enjoyed it and will be back again despite the shortcomings!
This is the first time I’ve ever played stumpy lake where I’ve had complaints. I love the course played it a dozen times, but the tee boxes was like concrete and the bunkers were solid as a rock too. Other than that the course is awesome.
Where is the money going?
Greens fees are higher than they have ever been and the course conditions are the worst they have ever been. Tee boxes are covered in crab grass or dead pan and even when you do find a spot to stand level, you need a hammer to get a tee into the ground. If there is any compliments to be made about the course, the fairways are in decent shape, the course layout is challenging and the scenery and wildlife give you the feeling of being on a secluded golf course. But then there are the greens. Not sure what happened here but nearly every green is severely damaged. There are numerous unplayable sections of the greens on practically every hole. Despite the greens being in such terrible condition, it’s even more disappointing that when you do get to the portion of the green that should be playable, the divots of previous players take even more away from what could be a great course. It’s like the players are starting to give up on the course. This place has so much potential and it needs a lot of help. If the Marshal paid more attention to the players not fixing their hacks and divots and spent less time harassing players trying to speed up pace of play by riding through the acorn covered wooded area “in my tree line”, players might take better care of the course for you. For most of the course, the tree line and the lake views are the best parts of the course. I’ve never been more disappointed by a course or it’s conditions as I was for Stumpy Lake, and I have never been disappointed to the degree to want to write such a review, but when you are charged 100% of a greens fee and given 50% of a golf course, it kind of writes itself. Just curious where’s the money is going.
Greens need work
Tried to repair the greens but it didn’t take. Second cut was too high. Old course needs some TLC
Tee time doesn’t equal start time
Booked a 7:56 tee time and got to the tee box ready to tee off at 7:50. The only problem was that there were 4 groups ahead of us with earlier tee times, so we didn’t actually tee off until 8:30. The only complaints on the course are that the greens were bumpy and not kept up and you basically needed a hammer to push your tees into the ground.
Great for the money
Course was in pretty good condition, staff was friendly and the pace of play was excellent.
Favorite course in VA beach Area
This is my favorite course in the VA beach area, even though it does need some work on certain holes / putting greens. I shot my best at this course as a high handicap player (89) and I enjoyed the nature scenery it has. You'll occasionally see some deer and turkeys on the course which I thought was really cool. No houses/homes/cars in sight on this course which is a plus IMO.
They have a full driving range, chipping and putting area. The club house has all the food and drinks you need to keep you going.
Once the course is in better condition, I believe it has the potential to be PGA level and rival Red Wing Lake Golf Course.
Still going strong
When this course is not flooded, as this was the case today, I recommend playing. Greens were slow in the morning but by 11 am, they were a little faster. Fortunately the water containers were full and the water was cold. The heat & humidity was in full force by 10 am. The staff was very accommodating especially when I made a snafu in scheduling a tee time. Instead of scheduling for a foursome I did a single. My other partners were already at the clubhouse and their names were not listed. Lucky for us and me in particular we were squeezed in
Course is just okay
Course is in just OK condition at best. Large dirt and dead spots on the greens/fairways/tee boxes. Greens roll painfully slow. Course layout is good and fun to play though. Most of the grass in the tee boxes were so long it was equivalent to hitting out of the rough which is definitely not optimal.
