Surprisingly Great

We had no idea what to expect with this course. First timers driving about an hour to play for a very fair deal from the app. Extremely pleased overall. Most of the staff were amazingly friendly especially the guys at the cart pickup. No beverage cart was a negative. We also got behind a group that must have been playing for $ but they left at the turn and the pace picked up. Course layout was challenging but also fun and gettable for a couple of 19ish handicaps. We are 50+ and made a great call to play the Blue/Whites. Course conditions were also great by our meager standards. We will definitely go back and play Black Heath as well as the other Fords Colony public assessable course. Highly recommend!

We played only nine holes on Blue Heron which, instead of ending at the club house, ended up in the middle of nowhere. We tried to retrace our route to the clubhouse but got lost because in a couple of places the cart part divided and the signs were confusing. On our return, upon our inquiry, we were told that we could have called and we would have been directed but I did call and I was put on hold. Anyway, either the signs should be more clear or when someone signs up for 9 holes, they should be given instructions how to return to the clubhouse. Not a big deal but we were in a rush that is why we played only 9 holes.

The course was in good condition but divots were not repaired and sand traps were compacted partly due to some rain the night before. However, for private country club one would expect that sand traps would be well drained to handle small amounts of rain.

We were not allowed to take the carts to our car.

Fords Colony Blackheath

Played a nicer winter day. Lost the 1/4 zip around the 5th hole - a nice sunny day. Course was in some of the best winter shape I have seen throughout Williamsburg. Got a good GN deal. I do think $10 for a very small bucket of balls is a bit much. That was really the only negative thing other than when we arrived we visited several locked doors until we made our way to the lower level pro shop. We didn’t use the bag drop because that was within the “members only” parking lot that was largely signed as such. Maybe conspicuous signage that reads “Bag Drop and Members Only Parking”

Great Place to Play

I played the Blue Heron course on a Saturday in December and the course was in great shape. The staff was very helpful and professional. If you’re looking for a great place to play in the Williamsburg area don’t miss out on this one. It’s a gem!

Okay course. Nothing special.

After arriving for our stay at the Marriott Manor club we decided to get out and play 9 holes at Ford's Colony Blue Heron course. While the price seemed good since 4 rounds were included in package, I was disappointed with the course conditions. Fairway grass was rough and patchy in places. On the second hole there was an abundance of leaves and debris all over the fairway which made it very difficult to find one's ball. There were repair areas yet there wasn't a single person in sight doing any cleanup or maintenance of the course. Greens were decent and rolls were pretty consistent. Pace of play was fine since there were few people out playing in the hot afternoon weather. The cart attendant was friendly and helpful. However when we returned there was no one around to help us. I didn't find the pro shop folks to be very friendly or pleasant. Overall I found the course being on the easier side since it is so flat and hole layout is very basic & straightforward. I've been to other 'resort' courses. This one falls right in line with other resort courses I've played. Overall there are better and more challenging courses around Williamsburg. I can't imagine being a member of this country club.

Raised the rates

Overall i like playing both the black heath and Blue Heron but since they raised the rates in 2024. Just not worth it. Stay away from Williamsburg National too. They raised their rates too and not worth it.

Always a great time, staff is awesome, minor issues

Had trouble with range ball number at practice area but another kind old gentleman golfer paid for us. Found my range finder on range and saved it. Greens were aerated and top dressed so a bit bumpy. Still very receptive and true. No cart girl but water all over the course and no food at turn far from clubhouse. Two guys in front of us were slow and struggling. Still the best deal , course conditions in the area .

Deluge on the 9th

Good practice facility though chipping green aerated and sanded. Range balls are pricey. Played Blue Heron. We had not played this 18 for awhile. Excellent condition except golfers still not fixing their ballmarks. 4some ahead of us were very slow. We were caught by another 2some around the 7th hole. Rumblings all around us caught us at 9th. Finished the par 5 and sheltered between 9 and 10 to wait it out. Over an hour later still raining. Called the course to see if course would be closed and they said we could play. Surprised at that since it was pretty much unplayable fairways and greens. 25 min ride back to clubhouse, two great young men took care of our clubs and we headed out. It was still raining when we left. Would usually go into restaurant/bar but had other plans. 9 hole rain check
