Feels like home
Course is an easy flat layout with a few fun holes. The staff is amazing and part of what keeps me coming back!
Unfortunate
This course was damaged by a tornado that took out a reported 300 trees. The trees are now gone and surfaces have been smoothed, but the lack of trees certainly changes the play. This, of course, is not something that management can change. However, the fairways were were in dismal shape. Lots of bare patches, and tough grass. It felt, many times, like hitting off concrete. Greens are manicured but lots of ball marks.
This course is history
Played in July 2018. The course is awefull. I believe it is for sale. The conditions are deplorable except for greens. I think it was flooded and destroyed. Dead areas and crab grass fairways. Is in a depressed area and beyond repair Would require a great deal of money to make it nice. Dead fairways/crabgrass bare tees and snarely weedy rough. Too bad nice layout but unplayable now. Clubhouse is small and smells musty. Doubt it will survive very long. Was a nice trak few years back. It is a shame.
The best I've seen Big Ben in thirty years or more
This course was severely flooded one year ago, as many were in West Virginia. I have played this course on and off for more than thirty years and have never seen it so good. The tees and the fairways are near perfect and the greens are like billiard felt, fast but fair with enough undulation to challenge any golfer. I paid less than twenty five dollars on a holiday. I would recommend Big Ben to anyone who loves golf!
Regionals
Nice course, enjoyed it. To make it simple its a old mans course. Hit it straight and play smart and you'll do good.
My first impression of Big Ben was it has a lot of level fairways, which is difficult to find in this part of WV.
Overall, I found the course very challenging and a good value. The course has a lot of angles that can reward shorter hitters that can place the ball. I've played the courses several times each year over the past five years and have found the condition of the greens to vary. They can be very nice at times but generally are not considered to be among the fastest greens in the area. The part 3's are generally long 180-200 yds and water comes into play on several holes. This course is one of the most popular public courses around Charleston.
