Come back strong!
Played here for a good friends bachelor party and had an awesome time. They were the only course in the area who would allow 7 of us to play in one group (for the record we had no pace of play problems). Memorable layout, maybe the best 18th hole I've played as far as elevation change is concerned. Really hoping this place rebounds after it's renovation period and stays accessible to the public. It's a Pete Dye gem!
Bad Shape and Abandoned Feeling
The greens are cracked in areas and the condition of the course itself was not good at all. No help from the clubhouse regarding tee times, who's up next, etc.
I will not return to this course...................................................................
Lost in Time
I still love this place. Used to play the Shadow Course,
one of my all time favorites, but the Sky Course is not
bad. There were only a few other golfers on the course, which I will never understand. I live across the street from Angeles National, and I played Los Canyons for 1/3 the cost, including gas.
The Staff said the course is closing
I love the layout, but as the course is closing soon the conditions are poor.
To bad at one time this was a great place to play
Dye/Couples gone to seed
This is a tough golf course and often windy due to location in Simi Valley. The lack of water makes for tight and inconsistent lies and makes a tough course downright discouraging for the decent but not great golfer. One hole on front 9 I've hit nearly my best drive and just can't get it across the ravine due to wind and distance and I'm hitting it 200 plus off the tee from silver tees of 6200 yards. Maybe I'll play here when I'm playing my best golf and see if I can break 100. I'm about a 16 hdcp, 61 yrs and this place is just no fun. I appreciate a good test, but this is mean golf.
Rough course conditions...
Played the Golds (6740/75.6/143) as a single in less than 3H on a GN Hot Deal for less than $30. Fairly windy, partly cloudy and in the 70's.
Having seen this place for 36 holes this week, the bones are still there. The Dye-Couples design is excellent. Great test of golf, with penalty strokes just waiting to bite you if barely offline. Hilly, long, undulating greens, usually windy in the canyons... one of the tougher courses I have ever played when the wind kicks up even a little. HOWEVER, it's like a movie star who has not aged gracefully. And they seem to be doing little to correct the slide.
Random observations:
1-No Sand bottles on the carts to fix divots. In fact, I saw nothing provided anywhere on the course to fix a divot.
2-Probably 50 mounds combined on different tees of burrowing animal holes up to 9" tall.
3-Weeds consistently in the 6" range on numerous tee boxes.
4-Numerous Black tees they have just let go, not mowed in months.
The tees were poor overall, the worst of any course I have played in the last 6 months. Many were unlevel. Adequate coverage of a mixture of grasses & weeds. The tees definitely have not been cut recently.
The fairways and rough both had adequate coverage but are more thin than lush. The fairways are weird. Overall they are large thin hardpan areas that are below average to play off of that are definitely a grass mixture at a height you would think were recently mowed... yet everywhere are 6" tall weeds popping up?
There is very little maintenance being done on the traps. Most of the green side traps had decent sand but they were not well maintained. Many were crusty or had large patches of grass growing in them. Most of the fairway traps they have basically just let them go. The worst traps of any course I have played in at least a year, probably longer.
The greens do not look good, but actually putt okay? Much better than you would expect after a visual inspection. They putted medium speed and were fairly smooth. Firm but held well struck irons wells. Some have clover, numerous ones have black spots and a few have some bare areas around the edges.
The customer service from everyone encountered was good. $25 including a cart is about the MAXIMUM this course is worth to play in it's current condition. Excellent layout even if the conditions are thoroughly mediocre.
Sky
Played the Golds (6740/75.6/143) as a single in 2H, 45M. Teed off @ 1:50pm on a Golfnow Hot Deal. Partly cloudy, around 80 and fairly windy.
The tees were poor. Many were unlevel, numerous ones had piles of dirt from burrowing animals and weeds in the 3" to 6" range. Adequate coverage of a mixture of grasses & weeds. The tees in actual use have definitely not been cut recently and numerous Black tees they have not mowed in months.
The fairways and rough both had adequate coverage, much more thin than lush. Both had weeds grown up, neither had been mowed recently.
Most of the green side traps had okay sand but they were not well maintained. Many were crusty. Calling most of the fairway traps hardpan is being generous, they have basically let them go.
The greens do not look good. Some have clover, numerous ones have black spots and a few have some bare areas around the edges. However, they play much better than they look. They putted medium speed and were fairly smooth. Firm but held well struck irons wells.
Have been meaning to play here again, was hoping the rains had done more good. While far from lush, the conditions of the grass are better than when I last played here 6 months ago. However, the course conditions are actually worse to play because of the lack of maintenance.
The customer service from everyone encountered was good. I would certainly NOT pay close to rack rate for this course, even though it is the closest course to my house. However, if you can get a deal it is worth it. Excellent layout even if the conditions are thoroughly mediocre.
Sad very sad
The course is dead the green were the worst i have ever played. Some of the green had water trails going through them. Some of the greens had mud spots. Tee box with weeds and holes in them. I saw a deal at $ 55.00 so I was thinking that was a little low. So I called and ask how is the course and I was told it was in good shape. if they think that this was in good shape they must be used to playing in the middle of the street. $55.00 maybe $20.00
Course codition is not good
Has played many times but getting worse... Staff is rude and should never talk with them. Not recommand to anyone....
Course conditions
Beautiful course I'll play this weekend
NICE LAYOUT ... but, conditions could be better.
I don't know if the SKY course is headed in the same direction that their MOUNTAIN(?) course did, but COME ON! Water this track!! It could be such a great course but the fairways and the greens seem to be neglected. And there is no ruff, just dirt. I know you're playing off the side of a mountain, but if you are not on target with each shot, your ball is gone. So make sure you bring a box of balls. I hate that the driving range is poorly set up and that you hit off dirt and dead grass. At least get the driving range right. I do appreciate that they make somewhat of an attempt to have a "cart" girl. A couple of cuties drive around in a standard golf cart with a big buck of beer and a zip lock bag of candy bars. Hey, better than nothing. More on the positive side, each hole is very unique and challenging. I enjoyed the various elevated tee-boxes and the tuff greens. I did shoot well and had a good time when I played last, but, for now, I ONLY play here when there is NOTHING available at other courses. Lost Canyons is in desperate need of some TLC.
nice course layout
Not at all what a person would expect knowing it is a Dye--Couples course. Beyond the California drought the fairways were to be expected, greens rolled very good, tee boxes need alot of attention, if you play the tips bring a weed eater and a gps to find them. If by chance you hit into a bunker bring your own rake and some roundup to get rid of the weeds. Driving range mostly dirt with no yardages. Golf carts are worn out no luxuray in driving them around. All in all there needs to be alot of maintence to be done before it can be called a golf course.
Poor Condition
When we drove up I knew we were in trouble. Few cars in the parking lot. I have played this course many times over the years and have never seen the course in such deplorable shape. The greens were pretty good., but the fairways were like playing in a weed or dirt patch. Fairway lies, other than divots that have been repaired, should have green grass that is growing, Not so. I doubt I'll be back for quite a while, as this course was challenging enough when it was in great shape. Even at a
"Hot Deal" price, I feel like I was "ripped off"!
Hot Deal" price
Lost Canyons
It appears that Lost Canyons is no longer maintaining the course. From the tee box to the fairway to greens, the course is in very, very poor shape. Even the sand traps are missing sand but they do have rocks and crab grass growing in them. I would not recommend this course to anyone even if they could play for free.
Donald
I love to play golf lost canyan even this
golf country condition is not good. I am enjoying mountine scinic with golfing. Sooo noce this place.
Get ready to get mad losing balls LOL
Very challenging course with many if not all of them, undulating ground. If you miss hit the ball, especially off the tee, just take another ball out from your bag. Many steep valleys around fairways so poking around the rough trying to find the balls doesn't work here.
One thing I want to mention about the fairway other than that is that the fairways in many holes are so undulating and have quite severe elevation change that even with a great shot off the tee, sometimes I end up losing balls.
If you want to score better, you need to play safe. Personally I don't care much about score yet since I'm a bogey player at best. Usually score for me here has been around 95-100, mostly due to lost balls.
And in some holes, you are forced to carry a certain distance. If you are not a average hitter off the tee(200+), you will struggle there. Then you probably should play bronze (white) instead of silver(blue). Forget about gold (black).
Lost Canyons Golf Club - Sky
Solid course with greens in great shape for the time of the season. Fairways are completely dead.
Beautiful and challenging
One of the most beautiful settings and certainly the most challenging course I've ever played. The holes were very interesting and the greens required a lot of thought. I really enjoyed playing and the pace of play was quick. The course was in good shape in general though the greens were a little rougher than most public courses.
Beautiful location
Gorgeous. Setting
Course very challenging
Love the scenery
Be prepared
Distance wise, the holes are relatively short and get to the greens on regulations. But greens are big and easy to three put.
The temperature went down in late afternoon and make sure to bring a sweater.
It was worth along drive from LA as the pace was play was great.
