DeLaveaga Golf Course & Lodge

About
Perched in the hills above Santa Cruz, DeLaveaga Golf Course & Lodge features plenty of elevation changes as well as tight, tree-lined fairways making this short layout anything but a cinch. The result of the tight layout, however, often translates into long rounds as higher handicappers look for their golf balls in the woods. Designed by Bert Stamps, the golf course opened in 1970. Conditioning is average, but DeLaveaga Golf Course & Lodge's green fees are a small fraction of its more famous neighbors.

Disappointed
Pace of play was very slow one. group holding everyone the back. Need a Marshall to regulate pace. The tee boxes were in bad condition and the fairways needed to cut. My cart keep dying on hills. I was very disappointed.
Very poor conditions for 2024
I’ve been playing this course off and on for 20 years and extremely disappointed in the level of care and upkeep for the entire course.
There is just very little upkeep of the tea boxes or fairways to even a minimum level.
Nice Pre-Thanksgiving round!
The weather couldn’t have been better! The pace was perfect. The beers were cold. The greens were true. Haven’t played here in over a decade, but I will definitely be back soon!
Saturday golf
Sand traps need work/ pretty hard packed. Tee boxes need work mowing/ seeded.
Bar needs to serve full menu all day. Finished at 2:45 had to have appetizers. No on course beverages or food.
Delaveaga Single line irrigation
Delaveaga golf course is a wonderful Track but in Mediocre condition. It's my recommendation that Delaveaga transitions to a desert style naturalist golf course with a Single line targeted irrigation system that can substantially shrink the irrigation footprint of the golf course. With tee box only watering instead of entire tee area watering. By transitioning to a naturalist style golf course, Delaveaga will save the City water while simultaneously allowing the maintenance staff to MANICURE only a small portion of the golf course and allow Delaveaga to compete with nearby golf courses
Tees too thick
The tee boxes needed to be trimmed. It was like hitting out of the tough on every tee shot.
They lost their way
Played the course several years ago and thought it was a solid course... Things have changed! I truly like the layout... but, the conditions have gone down hill. Most of the fairways are 50 % grass, either green to slightly dry, to just plain dirt. Let the grass clippings fall as they my.
The tee boxes are just about unplayable. On the par 3's the divots out number the grass blades and some of the repair baskets are empty. As for the other boxes, they are so uneven and lacking of a mowing it's hard to get an even stance... thank goodness for the 2 club length rule!
Now for the greens and bunkers... they just punched and sanded this week! I give them a pass on that as I do with the bunkers. Both had about the same amount of sand... the issue is, the patrons that use the course, find it beneath them to either rack the trap or fix their ball marks. SAD!
Now, the question is... will I play the course agin, if I'm in the area? probably not... but I might go by and judge the course before the decision to make a tee time.
Poor fairway and tee box conditions
Fun layout. I’ve played this course 100’s of times. The layout is fun. The tee boxes are in horrible condition and a lot of the fairways are dug up and dirt, no grass.
We'll rounded course in good shape
Wonderful day with a fresh breeze from the ocean. Afternoon players were fast and we didn't spend any time waiting or getting rushed from behind.
