nice day - a little hot
I've played this course off and on for years. The condition of the curse is excellent. The investment that the new owners began making a few years ago have really paid off. Greens are fast!
Condition of course was great!
Grass and green were great!! All good maintenance as nd happy to play this course!!
Meeting summer challenges well
I'm a weekly walker here, and while I agree that this course has inherent challenges baked into the topography, I think that just means it takes multiple rounds to become familiar with the best way to approach its challenges.
Fairways and greens are in GREAT shape, especially for this point in the summer. Greens hold approach shots fine.
Well maintained course, but it is what it is
Sly Fox could be a real gem but the problem with it is it is hard as a rock and the combination of hard ground and severe slopes makes it somewhat not as enjoyable to play as it could be if it were designed better. Lots of hills, lots of rolling makes it tough. I will say the fairways and the greens are in great shape.
Consistent conditions, keeps improving
This place is a gem that apparently had been neglected at one time in the past, but it is certainly not neglected anymore, it is in great shape and fun to play. The staff are very friendly and considerate.
First, the practice tee: as a person that just enjoys hitting balls, I love this place for the large grass range that is kept in incredible shape. No mats, no ropes. Just two tiers of turf, and plenty of it. There is a range membership offered that is a great value (shh, don't let too many people know), which together with the great range conditions sets Sly Fox apart in this regard.
Second, the practice green: it is large, kept in impeccable condition, and has a sampling of the undulations you will experience on the course.
Finally, the course. Conditions and layout.
Conditions:
Conditions are good. Fairways are really nice. Greens are quite consistent, if not the fastest around. With a lot of undulation and multiple levels, it's a good thing they don't play like a tennis court. Mainly, they are consistent.
Layout:
I've only played it a half dozen times, and I'm warming to it. It's not long, but it has other ways of challenging players. There are more than the usual number of drives that you don't get to watch land, which I resented at first, but now that I know the course, I have been able to live with. The greens overall are quite large, such that pin placement can make at least a one club difference, and it definitely matters which part of the green you hit if you are going to have a reasonable chance to 2-putt.
I recommend everyone give Sly Fox a try, but better yet a few tries, to have a chance to get to know it and devise a strategy that fits it.
Put this course into your rotation!
I played Sly Fox many years ago when it was Jackson's Chase and didn't remember it fondly. A friend told me that things have changed and to give it a shot and I'm so glad I did! The course far exceeded my expectations both in layout and conditions.
The layout kept my interest --- it has a good mixture of somewhat straight-forward holes and of holes that are a little trickier. It's certainly not a flat course which is probably one of the reasons it stood up to the monsoons we've endured this year. And compared to the DMV courses I often play, it's a much, much better value. The new ownership has done wonders!. Can't wait to get back out there!
Excellent for the $$
I was pleasantly surprised by what I encountered this past weekend. The course doesn't have a lavish clubhouse where they sell stuff that no one ever buys at a golf course and what they have serves it's purpose which is to take people's money and send people off on their rounds. Their clubhouse has a bar that serves cold drinks and hot food and restrooms, which is all that is really needed in a clubhouse. The driving range is nothing special but it serves it's purpose as well, which is to allow golfers to warm up if wanted/needed. The golf carts are on the older side but they get the job done too, just like everything else about this course.
The really spectacular part of this is the golf course itself. It shows that what $$ they aren't spending on the ammenities, they are spending on keeping the course in tip top shape. The tee boxes, fairways, and rough were all in great shape. What is truly impressive are the greens. They are in excellent shape. They are mown tight and roll true, which seems harder and harder to find these days.
The course layout itself is a very interesting one in a good way. It's not particularly long at 6500 from the blues, but the course's main defenses are the elevation changes, sloping fairways, and contoured greens. Playing this course for the first time will prove challenging as you will not know where to hit tee shots to set yourself up for success but once you get a lay of the land, you will be itching to go back and shoot a better score.
I highly recommend that people go out and experience this little gem as you won't be disappointed.

definitely play again
staff extremely polite and courteous course in good shape would recommend to friends
Great price to play
I like the layout of this course. Some of the greens were in rough shape. Don't like that some of the holes have houses lining the fairways.
Golfing on a Hot Day
The course was not crowded as we played during the week. The course was wet in a lot of locations and most of the greens. It is a great course to work on different parts of your game as it's hilly and has challenging greens. This course has Bermuda grass in the fairways and its edges. I'm not a fan of this type of grass but it wasn't to bad.
Nice course for the value.
The fairways were hard, most bunkers need to be worked on like removing the weeds and having better sand mixture. Greens were pretty burnt in spots along with multiple holes on some of them.
Pace of play was just over 3 hrs for 2 people on a Saturday.
First time, last time
Tees mediocre.
Many greens burned out already.
Fairways ok.
Most bunkers had no or little sand and filled with grass (not taken care of).
Rough was mostly clover.
course needs help
first of all we are coming off a few days of rain here in the shenandoah valley..so i'll not be as negative as i should be on this course...the course is off the beaten path not easy to access but a relaxing country ride..now for the course..bottom line it needs taken care of better...no definable fairways,,greens worst i've played on in a few years(and they didn't used to be like that here)..I like the lay out but they need to take care of it alot better..if you hit the ball in the rough save yourself time and just drop where you think you landed cause you won't find it..i was one of 7 golfers that were on the course at noon on a 70 degree day and the only thing the pro shop was worried about was i had blue jeans on...i'll make a deal with them....present me a proper course to play and i'll wear proper attire...sorry about the negativity i used to really enjoy playing here
Could be good with proper effort!
I have played this course about seven times. The course condition has varied from good to very poor. During my April 2016 visit the greens were pretty good but all other conditions were poor. The fairways were like a normal first cut rough and the actual rough was very long with weeds, dandelions and many other forms of unidentified vegetation making play difficult.
This course could be an amazing property if brought up to normal standards. The layout is interesting, the scenery beautiful, and the manager very friendly. Obviously the owner is challenged by maintence costs, but they keep their rates rather low. Through Golf Now you can often play this course for $18.
If you want a nice day in the Shenandoah Valley, and don't expect a pristine venue, then Jackon's Chase is worth a try.
great features
the course is in poor shape right now... the traps need sand in them..... but would try again in late summer
Cow pasture gone rogue
Wow...the sign looked inviting from the Interstate. Wife and I were looking for something different and boy, did we find it, different and not worth the stop. This course is in bad shape...the fairways are brown and indistinguishable as actual fairways. The guy running the check-in was also responsible for cart cleaning and running the bar/drinks. No marshal to move anyone along...double stacked at the #4 tee waiting. Managed to jump 2 groups on the turn by having exact change for a beverage and moved out smartly. Interesting tee positions and plenty of blind shots.
Tee box or weed garden?
The cost to play the course is cheap with hot time deals but not worth it to play even at 13$. The tee boxes were the worst I've seen anywhere, not cut to proper height but then it is hard to get crab grass to the same height and lots of dips and slops in the tee boxes too. The greens were a little better then last time when it looked like a giant golf ball was pressed into them but still had burnt/balled patches threw out. I will never go here again just to avoid the frustration of trying to tee off and putt.
Average course appropriate price
The day I played was extremely hot and there was no coolers on the course. It would be nice to have one half way on front and back. We had 2 slow groups ahead of us and it took the 2 of us 4.5 hrs to finish in a cart. The greens were in good shape and the rough appropriate. The fairways and tee boxes needed some work. There is one tee box that your unsure of what green to hit too. And one cart path that is confusing as to which way to next hole. Not bad or excellent, it is a good value course.
Needs improvement
Their is no water to drink or even wash your golfballs. Bathrooms are at the clubhouse no where is their a Johnny Blue. Food prices are alittle high.
