Sun Mountain at Las Vegas Paiute Golf Resort
About
At the Sun Mountain course at the Las Vegas Paiute Resort, Pete Dye uses the rolling terrain in an almost links-style design.
Straying from fairways can put you in the fescue grass, but this isn't the ball-gobbling fescue you'd expect from Dye. If anything Sun Mountain plays easier than Snow Mountain. The 140 slope rating from the back tees might even seem a little inflated when you're out on the course.
Which isn't to say it's a complete pushover. It's still a Dye after all. It still has bunkers you'll remember. Or lose sleep over.
Take the green-guarding bunker on the 219-yard par-3 14th. It is so steep in front that you almost have to hit the ball straight up in the air to get it out successfully. Some hackers become so unnerved by this bunker that they hit out backward, going back toward the fairway to escape. Yes, even at his kindler, gentler best, Pete Dye can make golfers retreat on a course.
Sun does not hit you with much water, but it makes good use of the vast Paiute landscape. There are huge desert areas between the holes, giving each hole a sense of isolation. You're not going to be observing someone's shank on a parallel fairway.

Sun Mountain in her prime!
Put together a threesome for this amazing course and being the first time we played there wasn't quite sure what to expect. We arrived a little early and was greeted at the bag drop promptly and had all our gear secured and waiting for us to go out. The facilities are amazing and I almost wanted to just hang out and get a drink at the bar because it had such a cool atmosphere. The starter was friendly and gave us a few tips as to how to approach the course which was much appreciated. The only concern we had that day was the wind, It was blowing about 40-50 mph and that made the day challenging to say the least. Funny thing was the course was just in amazing condition and we started getting used to the wind when we realized what a beautiful and challenging course this really was. Even with the wind howling you could still get on the greens in two or three and have a chance at par on every hole. The bunkers are well maintained and the hazards are actually pretty forgiving. Seemed almost easy to find my ball out in the desert. You cannot go wrong here and I am looking forward to returning and trying the other courses as well.
Resort course?
99% of golfers who play this course cannot land an approach shot on these greens and stop the ball. This is supposed to be a resort course that players of all abilities can enjoy, not a PGA tour stop.
I also think you’re packing too many players on the course to the point that multiple groups are waiting on a hole. I understand that you want to maximize business, but it makes the player’s expertmiserable.
Vegas Golf must play
Played the Sun. Great condition. Fun to play with many hills to contend with. The greens may not have looked it but they were in good condition and rolled true. Staff was great, off course amenities were top notch and the clubhouse had a great selection of merchandise in the pro shop. We had breakfast before our round that was very good.
Happy Birthday round
Great course except the high winds which made course virtually unplayable. But the clubhouse and practice facilities are the best in the city if not all of Nevada and maybe Socal
PAIUTE
ALL IN ALL, PAUITE WAD THE BEST WITH THE BEST PRATICE FACILITIES IN THE CITY, IF NOT IN THE STATE.
Desert golf at its finest
Played the Wolf course last January and enjoyed it. Course conditions then were great. Played Sun mountain second time around and conditions were just as good- even better. Pace of play was great. Booked a twilight rate for about $75 per person and got 18 holes in with no problem. Wouldn’t hesitate to come back.
Overbooked... on a windy Thursday in Feb?
Course was way overbooked. Got stuck behind a five-some (not sure why that's alright?) and couldn't move ahead because of poor players in front of them. Only got to play 9 holes and it was frustrating. I'll stick to playing in the early morning from now on.
Sun Mountain
Magnificent. I have played regularly in LV over last 10 years and this is a must play trio. Outstanding conditions and lightning fast greens. Have your bump-n-run shot ready and defensive downhill putting or you’re in for trouble. Play reasonable tees as challenges lies in approach shots and chipping/putting at Paiute Resort. Really good complex just outside Vegas.
Worth the drive
Just a short drive north of town you will find three great courses that are always in great condition.
