Great value and pace of play
3.5 hour Sunday afternoon round, conditions were very good considering the dry spell and then substantial rain Saturday. Greens were good, fairways nicely kept and green. Friendly staff and welcoming for a private club that opens tee times to the public.
Wheeling Feeling
The pro shop nicely moved us up in front of 3-3somes & we played uninterupted. Many holes very hilly * balls hit in fairways rolled into the rough. Nice condition throughout the entire 18. We will likely play again and at least once a year going forward. Just be prepared for some very steep sloped holes on both nines!
Top notch
Hard to beat price around here definitely member worthy
Form your own opinion
Every local should play it once to form their own opinion. But for a club struggling with membership, it’s not hard to see why. It just feels like there’s been no investment in the course in a long time. If all you care about is fast play, you’d probably enjoy it.
needs an update
needs new cart paths. greens slow. very, very hilly. lots of blind shots. not even a course layout to look at. would be better if knew course.
Very interesting experience
So when you purchase a tee time on golf now it says member for a day. I called in the morning to ask if they had a range and the guy said yes but members only. When I showed up I questioned what member for a day meant and it was just a tee time. I said for a club trying to get members why wouldn’t you allow me to have all the amenities? The answer was dead silence then I got a response of we are trying to get it off on golf now but can’t figure it out. I never saw the range and I wish I could’ve of taken a dip after the round but again members only. As far as the golf course. Pro shop said greens were going to be slow he was telling the truth. Down hill putts were not making it to the cup. The layout was nice and a lot of the par4s are really gettable for birdies. Tee box’s were decent a couple weren’t level but the course was built into a mountain. For 45.00 bucks I will be back. As far as a membership and what they are asking for it no chance in h*ll. All in all if your around the area I don’t think your going to find a better kept course for 45.00. I also don’t want this to fall against the young man in the pro shop. He was the one telling me what I wasn’t allowed to do but it was not personally his fault he was just delivering the answers when I asked questions.
First Time Wheeling Country Club
First time playing this normally private club. Course is well taken care of. Tee boxes, fairways and greens all in prime condition despite how dry it has been. Rough was cut short which was a positive because it still penalized you if you missed the right fairways. Overall fun to play and will be back.
Devereux Emmet Course that has been Altered
I sought this course out for the original Dev Emmet design. Seeing that Ferdinand Garbin renovated the course, I should have known. He has done some horrible renovation work on classic courses. He basically destroyed the back 9. Some of the original abandoned greens are still visible. Sad to see the atrocious work he did.
The course still has big elevation changes and some of the original design left. Conditions were good and the original holes that remain are solid.
