An Nice Sandbelt Members club open to visitors
“Keysy” as it is affectionately known, is a nice little private members club in south east Melbourne. It is probably the most southern, and most eastern of the traditional “Melbourne Sandbelt” clubs.
I last played here 20 years ago, so I could only remember a few of the holes. On this day, in the middle of winter, patches of some holes were extremely wet, but other patches were much like one would expect from the Sandbelt - bone dry and hard. Green complexes are smooth and fast and have the traditional bunkering we would expect.
I did generally enjoy the layout, but perhaps compared to some of the other Sandbelt courses it might be a little bland. The course seems to specialise in short to mid range par 4s that have little dog legs in them. There are a couple of quirks in that the par fives on each nine are played in succession. 7 & 8 are par fives and 10 and 11. 11 is a tough hole as it veers right and the landing area from the tee is tight with a bunker and water left and not much fairway in between.
The course has a decent driving range, lovely putting green and warmup nets next to the tenth tee. They also welcome guests at certain times - it’s worth a hit!
OK, but a bit dull
Found the course layout a bit dull, awkward doglegs and not particularly interesting green areas. The course was in good condition, I imagine it would be year round although the greens were very soft.
This course is a gem
What a great course, hidden on the outskirts of the Sandbelt, the layout is sensational opening with 3 long Par 5s and some sensational Par 3s. The course is in such great condition, we loved playing and will certainly be back. Great golf course
Correction, I had the 9s the wrong way around, 1,2 are the par fives, as are 16,17
