Greystone Legacy
The Legacy Course at Greystone Golf & Country Club is the newer of the two golf courses the club offers. We were able to access it through ClubCorp benefits, and I must say it was one of the best courses I've played under ClubCorp.
The course starts off with a pretty straightforward Par 4 that will give you a great indication of how the course will play. The course has big wide fairways that offer plenty of landing room. As another reviewer has noted, the Zoysia grass in the fairways will tee the ball up if you can hit them. Wayward drives can be punished, however, as the majority of the holes are completely framed by trees. Also, the rough gets very thick and the ball will settle down.
There is a fun mix of holes on this course, most notably the Par 3s and 5s. The first Par 3 is all carry over water, another is to an elevated and heavily bunkered green with a severely sloped green, and the last has significant elevation change. The Par 5s mostly play left to right and offer some good scoring chances if you can put the ball in the fairway. The most notable Par 5 is the 18th, which finishes with an approach over water.
The course conditions were continually spectacular, and possibly the best conditioned course I've played all year. Both the fairways and greens were immaculate, with lush grass that was playing tight and fast. Putts were rolling true on lines all day. The fairways and greens were so thin on divots you wonder how often this course even gets played. Overall, a fun challenge, beautiful facilities, and friendly staff made for a great day.
Course conditions among finest in B’ham
First time playing the Legacy course aft playing the Founders course a handful of times.
It is difficult to design two very different golf courses on the same piece of property, but Greystone has done it.
I found the Legacy to be brawnier than its sister course, and played more like a traditional classic course.
The greens are Bent here, and Bermuda at the Founders, providing a very different feel on the greens. The greenskeeping staff does an excellent job maintaining the Bent in this heat. They rolled true and were really quick. Exceptional. Plenty of slope as well to keep your attention.
I really liked the Zoysia fairways - not something found around here. The ball sits up nicely and seemed to jump off the face of irons.
The Rees Jones’ scalloped bunkering style is prevalent and the sand was consistent.
The strength of the course is the collection of par 5s. Three of the four move from left to right and the other is dead straight, but the three do not play similarly.
The Bermuda rough is thick. Hitting fairways are a must to score well. A lot of uphill and downhill holes.
The practice area is above average and the chipping/bunker practice area sits on a peninsula behind the clubhouse surrounded partially by a small pond. It is among the finest I have ever seen.
