Unexpected gem, both challenging and fun to play
Just played this course this past week and I was highly impressed. First off, Key West is not a golf destination by any means. This coming from a low handicap golfer who has worked in the golf industry and played my share of golf courses across the country. Second off, I am not one to write reviews but felt that the Key West Golf Club deserved to be recognized for what I saw & experienced.
I was welcomed by a staff that was very hospitable and customer service oriented. This great service started off at the bag drop and continued throughout my experience in the pro shop, on the course with the beverage cart, and afterwards in the restaurant.
I was paired with a group of members who really appeared to take great pride in their golf club and were helpful in navigating me around the course and with club advice. The course is a very challenging par 70 course and has a great mixture of various length holes perfectly routed throughout the property. Picking the right club and perfect shot shape off the tee is key to scoring here. The tee boxes and fairways are well maintained. The majority of the green complexes are protected by sand traps. The greens were very receptive and they ran fast & true.
I truly enjoyed my experience at the Key West Golf Club. In fact, so much that I returned the next day to play another round.
The only reason I didn’t give the course 5 stars in the off course amenities portion is that they do not have a true driving range. They have a multi-bay hitting area enclosed with a net. Because of this I gave it 4 out of 5 stars. Also for Value for the Money category I gave it 4 out of 5 stars as $140 may be a steep price for some.
Final word…. If you’re in Key West and you’re a golf enthusiast- go play Key West Golf Club!
Shameful
One doesn't go to Key West to play golf, but the Rees Jones pedigree of this course made me feel it was worth a try.
The front nine was virtually unplayable. It was a mess of puddles and sloppiness. The back nine was wet but reasonably playable (most of it, anyway). While they may have had recent rainfall, this level of flooding is just mismanagement.
Had they closed the front and had us play the back twice, I might not have been so incensed. But for the rates they charged, and the horrible conditions, this was insulting.
Don’t waste your money
Went there expecting a nice island course with views and good condition. None of that is true. Course is in bad condition, traps have 3-5” rocks in them. Didn’t tell me when making tee time one hole was closed and they made a par 5 into a 3 and 4. Drainage pipes laying in first cut off fairways. Greens super sandy and inconsistent. Rental clubs were beat up and filthy. No towels for cleaning them. Only course there and they don’t care. Rude counter people, starter was busy talking to friend rather than helping us. Construction workers driving through course and not waiting or quiet when players were hitting. $100 a round is about $80 too much.
Awful experience. Avoid
I made a tee time to play Key West Golf Club. The day before the tee time I broke my finger. I called the Pro Shop and told them I would need to cancel the tee time. This was more than 24 hours before the incident. I was instructed to call GolfNow. When I did so, Golfnow was not able to cancel the reservation as it was within 24 hour notice. As a result I was charged $215 on my credit card.
Awful experience. Avoid.
Definitely not getting what you pay for
Overall, we had a good time at Key West Golf Club. However, all you’re really doing is paying for the name and place. This course is definitely not worth $125. There are municipal courses where I’m from in better shape and friendlier staff for half the price. KWGC doesn’t have a driving range, but still charge for range balls to hit in their net. This doesn’t make sense. Every club that I have been to that doesn’t have a driving range, provides free range balls. With the club rental, they should at least provide a sleeve of balls; they did not. They do give you a free bag of tees though! Lol. The course was in good shape even though it rained heavily the night before. The staff could be much nicer and friendlier. If they charged half the price, the staff demeanor and attitude would have been just fine. For the money we spent, getting a smile shouldn’t be that hard. Overall, if you really want to play golf in Key West, do it. It is fun, but keep your expectations low even though your spending close to $200 each person. I will probably not return, but I can say I have played golf at the southern most golf course!
Great time
The course took on a lot of rain about an hour before tee time. The course drained very well-just had some muddy spots but not much standing water. The tee boxes and greens were in great shape! The fairways were in very good shape. The course is very challenging and will keep you on your toes! Had a great time with who i was paired with and everything kept moving, little to no waiting during play. Had one small issue with a grounds crew in the line of hitting that didnt want to move otherwise everything went smoothly.
Place to golf While in key west
Came down here in august. It was too hot lol. Great course but it’s better to be here in the fall and winter. Lol
Nice course, greens and fairways are in great shape.
Played the course as single, not another sole in sight the whole round. Fair course, nice layout, # 7 was a challenge. Lot’s of water on the course, but not unreasonable. Would play again.
Passing thru
Fairways were awesome. Greens aerated but healing nicely. Pro shop guy was horrible. He has no idea what customer service is about. Wasn’t rude but certainly wasn’t nice. (Eric). More like he just didn’t want people in there. Great course but I will probably play another key course because of him. Bartender was rude as well. She was very short with interactions. She should realize this in the amount of tips she wasn’t getting.
Could be a stellar place to play with just a little personality.
Golfed In Key West!!
Spur of the moment trip to Key West and saw there was a course, so of course I had to play it!
There was no practice range, but a netted facility to warm up. The staff was not the friendliest, but I'm finding that more common than it should be these days.
The course was equally beautiful and challenging! The bunkers were brutal due to stones/coral chunks that made them very difficult. Greens were fast and in good condition. The wildlife was entertaining too! Overall had a great time playing!
Southern Most.
Staff was wonderful from Danny in the Pro Shop to Karen in the bar and Juan at the carts. Busy course but we played 18 in just over 4 hours. It is tight and shot making is key. For all the pkay the course was in pretty good shape.
Nice round but unfriendly staff
The course is nicely laid out. Greens were in good conditions. Tee boxes poor, fairways decent. Had a nice quick afternoon round with two locals, Rick & Juan who were very friendly, relaxed and fun. Tonality and friendliness of manager and in particular the starter (Mike) were lousy. They seemed annoyed that foreign tourists want to play the course and leave their money there. Sundown rate was 85$. We started 3:45 and made it home easily in light conditions.
Windy and Fun
We played the front nine in windy conditions so some holes were challenging in terms of club selection but the overall experience was great and the staff was very helpful and professional. Bonus was playing among the many beautiful cottages lining the course. Definitely will come back and would absolutely recommend this course.
The only show in town.....
The most southern golf course in the U.S. The course was very average overall. A shorter course as I believe the tips were only around 6600 yards. Layout was ok but not great. A few of the holes were pretty holes and an interesting par three where you are hitting over the swampland. Greens were in good condition but very hard. I didn't even have to fix a divot from a 100 yard wedge shot. A lot of the bunkers have tons of huge rocks in them for some reason. Homeless camps beside the fairways next to the highway made things interesting. $110 or $85 at twilight. I felt that was a bit pricey as in my mind it's a $50 golf course all day long where I am from. But the tee sheet was pretty booked up so if they can get it then good for them. Unfortunately no beautiful ocean holes or water holes you might think of when you think of keys golf but I knew that going in. It's about the only ball game in town for golfing throughout the keys which was the only reason I was there. Can say I played it once but have no real reason to want to go back.
