Oceanside Desert Golf
Al Mouj is an impeccably groomed challenge in the space between the Gulf of Oman and the desert. Friday tee times were plentiful that July day, possibly due to the temperature. Summer in Oman is quite hot and humid.
The pro shop at Al Mouj was obviously a sub-let space provided to an independent golf retailer. The shop was small but well stocked with everything you could need. You could even demo some clubs in the hitting bay!
I was traveling without my sticks and was able to rent a nice set of clubs (TM M-6) for about 20-25 bucks, bringing my grand total for green fee, cart and clubs to about $120 (USD).
The course provided a players assistant that escorted me to the practice area, set me up on the range, and started me. My assistant also brought me two slushy type drinks on the back nine, when the heat exhaustion was really setting in. It was just what I needed.
The course does a lot with a mostly flat parcel of land situated on the gulf of Oman. Views of the gulf abound, and four holes run along the shore. It was very near the airport in a development that included nice homes. They were still building a large lake near the clubhouse, and possibly a cart barn, as the cart boys were located a bit away.
My golf cart had a GPS unit that was alive but not working. This made club choice challenging because there were no other yardage markers anywhere. I didn’t have my rangefinder. So, I had to play by feel that day.
The knee-high rough was quite healthy and green. Balls hit there were rarely seen again.
The greens had been recently perfed and sanded. So they weren’t PGA tour fast, but were in perfect condition.
The open tee sheet that day meant play was speedy. I finished 18 holes in 3:15! I can recommend the chocolate shake from the Al Mouj bar/grill, exactly what I needed for post-round recovery. If you go, take a GPS or rangefinder, stay out of the deep rough, or you will lose balls.
