River Bend Golf Club

About
River Bend Golf Club combines some of the most unique play in the area with a course designed to provide an exciting golfing experience for players of all levels. Beautiful oak trees and meandering streams give the golf course its character, with elevation changes, multi-tiered greens and challenging areas of forced carry-including water features-and areas of forced lay-up in a links-style course, especially on the front 9. The back 9 is a more traditional golf course. All of this combined with the Texas wind makes River Bend a formidable challenge for even scratch golfers. It's one of the only only true links courses in south Texas. The staff is super and the course is very affordable. River Bend Golf Club has a unique practice facility that features an aqua range with an island green. A large putting green makes the Maverick a super practice area.
Distance: About 33 miles southeast of downtown San Antonio and worth the trip. Take Rt 181 from the Southeast side of San Antonio. Located off the 181 business loop (4th street here in the city), coming north or south off Highway 181. The loop runs north and south, like Highway 181, and runs about 1/2 mile west of it. The course and facilities are located in the Avalon Subdivision.

Very Unkept Course
Greens were very bumpy and quite a few had large patches of dirt. Fairways were next to nonexistent, either no grass or crab grass. Bunkers were like hitting out of dirt, not sand.
Great course
Love the course, even though it's a far drive from me about an hour. Counter people could be a little more welcoming. The grounds crew are very considerate and friendly.
The course was an exceptionally good shape. All the greens are green, not burnt out like most of the courses in San Antonio. Fairways cut nice and short.
Good Course
I have played this course a couple of times. I live in San Antonio so it’s kind of far. But Saturday the weather was nice, I had some time so I played. The staff is extremely nice and helpful. The front nine was pretty slow and the back nine was really backed up, 6 carts waiting at # 10. I asked if I could play the front nine again and they said that was fine. It wasn’t ideal but I got in the full 18 and it wasn’t a much better pace.
Enjoyable course to play
Although the overall conditions were dry with some hard pan, the course design provided interest for my first round on it.. The greens were fairly true and consistant, the fairways were for the most part forgiving. Some challenging tight holes on the back nine. Tip, learn where the cross fairway hazards are. We had a fun time! Plan to return!
Super fun
Went out there with a buddy and it was fun even though the driving range and a couple holes were under renovations. Overall I’d say solid 4.7 outta 5 stars. Love the coolers too!
Players consideration
Pacing was bad because of slow players not allowing single players or faster groups pass by them.
Saturday at the links
Had a great round of golf with wife and granddaughter. Meet other golfers snd enjoyed the conversation
Fun Course, but don't know if I will be back.
This is my first time at River Bend, and I will have to think twice if I will be back again. Overall the course was an average layout, a few bunkers guarding the green, fairway bunkers that were easily out of play and no water hazards to speak of. The course is advertised as a links style course and it is far from it. The fairway were narrow at times and the greens were small.
The few things that were on the downside for the course and for my round are things that River Bend could be fixed but we're also mentioned in other reviews, and haven't been addressed. No water stations at all on the course, the boxes are there but no coolers, no beverage cart making rounds and at the proshop no water filling station, BUT they will sell you a $2 bottle of water. It was 90+ out and no water for players is poor management.
The pace of play was average, however without a Marshal checking the pace of play I was stuck behind a twosome on the front nine that made their life's mission to find every OB shot for at least 5 minutes, and on the back nine I caught upto a couple playing with a shared set of clubs and the boyfriend giving on course lessons to his girlfriend while teeing up multiple shots, taking a variety of putts, etc.... I had to skip a hole to get in front of them as they had no care or regard for other players.
The on course restroom was a small step above a porta potty at a street fair, it doesn't need to be a 5 star experience but it also should be clean and accessible.
The good, the greens were fast and rolled true, the practice area was off grass and the floating green is a nice touch. The fairways were green grass but a very hard pan, like hitting off a mat. If you hit fairly straight you will find your ball and can make a go at par. I liked the long par 3's it made you think about club selection.
If they provided some basic player amenities on course like a clean bathroom, water, and a starter/marshal to manage the pace it would be a decent day of golf with little complaint.
Progressing
Moved to Floresville in 2021 and since then the course has been progressively getting better and better. Greens have been better than ever this year. My only take away is the food and drink availability.
Good Value
The ground is hard, the grass is varying, but the course layout is very good. Great value for the price
Good Course for the Price
Solid option for a good price outside of San Antonio
