Best course on Oahu
Not sure why all the reviews for Hawaii golf courses exclude Hoakalei but they're mistaken. I've played every public and private course (except Oahu Country Club) and this is the best course on island.
It's always in great condition, the greens are quick but fair and the layout is also equal parts challenging but fair as well. I'm a 6 handicap and haven't broken 80 on the 10 times I've played it but I enjoy it every time.
It's private so you need to play with a member but it's the most accessible of the 5 private courses on island and for good reason.
They just built a new clubhouse and restaurant with a Michelin rated chef and the staff are always friendly. My only knock, if I had to find one, is that sometimes the pin locations border on unfair...but if that's the only bone to pick, then life is good.
Tale of Two nines
First off for the day and playing along at a 3 hour pace. Course was okay, but well below the other 5 courses we played on Oahu. Well kept but unspectacular. Staff was uninspired and clearly just working for a check. We made the turn only to find two foursomes were allowed to go off the back right in front of us (a twosome). We played the back 9 in two and a half hours. It was miserable. Had we not been sabotaged by the starter, the course would have picked up another star. Worst day of golf I had in Hawaii and we played 16 courses.
Favorite course on Oahu!!!
Just got to the island in June and had played a few courses already. I was unaware of the prestige of the course before I played. Nevertheless, I was in for a treat. This course has the best greens on island. I've played quite a few courses and only 2 have been able to match the quality and layout that this course has and both of those courses host PGA events.
BEST COURSE ON OAHU!
Hoakalei is the best course on the Island of Oahu. The course is absolutely beautiful with stunning water features and over 100 bunkers to challenge even the best golfers. Challenging but oh so fun. This course has all of the makings to host a PGA or LPGA event in the future and with the addition of their new clubhouse, they may be on their way. Ask anyone who has played here and they will tell you that it "is" the best course on Oahu.
Need a challenge, golf Hoakalei
This course has 111 bunkers. It seems like there are more but they're so strategically placed, you're bound to get into one. Bunkers are inconsistent but slowly being "redone". Some of them have fabric coming up under the sand. Sand is different in almost every bunker. The fairways are beautiful. Greens roll superb (even though I'm a terrible putter). Rough is a little dense and difficult to get out of for an average player. Not too much trouble in regards to trees or water. I play there 3 times a week and really enjoy the challenge. I feel like I can play any other course like a hero after golfing at Hoakalei. :) I always say, "Don't let the course hurt your feelings!"
They've just completed their driving range in June and it's a great place to practice if you don't have time for a full round of golf.
Staff is wonderful. They are personable and efficient. The chef is top notch. For the small trailer he has to work with, he really "dishes" out some amazing food.
There is no clubhouse but it's in the works. They have a temporary one with a small dining lanai that seems to work for now. It's quaint....and a great place to pop in for lunch or dinner when they are serving.
The pros at this course are awesome and very helpful. They don't hesitate to give a lesson or listen and answer questions.
Although this is a private club, membership is open and reasonable for purchase. If you know a member, it's fairly easy to get on to play a round for a decent fee. (by Hawaii standards)
If you're not into golf and just like to ride with your golfer (significant other) it's a beautiful course to view. The natural landscaping and wildlife is amazing to see. No need for a raincoat because it's always very sunny there. If you see members with umbrellas, it's not for the rain, its to help block out the sun.
Enjoy!
Great course
Tough course with lots (200+) bunkers but supurb fairways and fast greens. VERY friendly staff, grrat food. The only thing is that it's only a temporary clubhouse and driving range still under construction.
