Great layout, but always slow
Riverfront has really grown on me over the years. I used to avoid it because it's the most expensive daily fee course south of Williamsburg and there were too many other options. Now, though, as Signature and Cahoon have gone out of business, Virginia Beach National has filled in its waste areas, and Nansemond River has slowly started to sell its soul, I've started playing here more. And the more I do, the more I love the layout. I'm not sure I can name another course in Hampton Roads that has a green sloping from front to back, and Riverfront has a number of them. While I love the Golden Age architecture of Cavalier Country Club, the green complexes at Riverfront are simply amazing. They take a layout that is good and make it great.
That being said, the pace here is always brutally slow. Where almost every other course in the area might be a little more than 4 hours when they're busy, I'm forced to plan for a five hour round here. I've walked off after nine on multiple occasions because I just can't stand to wait that long.
I hope that their experience during the quarantine will convince them that walking should continue to be allowed, as it's the sheer number of people who are always there that slow up the pace of play, not the distance between some of the holes. I would also love it if they'd water the course a little bit less. The green complexes are built to allow players to run the ball up, but the areas in front of the greens are often wet and spongy, preventing that kind of play. Setting this course up to play fast would make it a lot more interesting and strategic.
Bonus points for having such a good practice area, with a huge grass range, separate chipping green, and a putting green that mimics the types of putts you'll see during your round.
One of the Better Public Options in the Area
Excellent public option in the Tidewater. The course conditions were great. Some holes are compromised by housing, 8 especially. But overall, a very nice course.
Good course. Staff could take some personality lessons.
Staff made you feel like an inconvenience. I don't know if they were having a bad day, or they saw we paid through Golf now web site, but they acted as if we were incroaching on there terf. This is the first that I have ever felt this way at this course but it is also the first time I used the golf now app at this course.
Riverfront of the Line
When looking for some challenge and a beautiful backdrop to some
scenic golf, take the time to look at this course. On a recommendation
from a friend, go to the front of the line in choosing this course to play.
Front nine greens a little difficult and the par 3's are quite challenging.
Fairways are very fair for driving and the surrounding housing development
doesn't come into the difficulty. Put Riverfront , front of the line....see you on
this course.
Lengthy course
This is a residential course. It is rather long and quite intertwined in the neighborhood. I do not recommend walking. The fairways at this time of the year are still low and can be muddy and hold moisture after rain. There is trouble if not driving well. Several fairways have marsh valleys. Several holes are well elevated and blind. Those who do not drive long can expect layups on a number of par 4s. Similarly some par 3s must carry hazards! Greens are well maintained, aerated recently but filling in well. Undulated.
Awesome
I play this course at least three times a month, it is awesome. One of the best courses in Hampton Roads. The greens if you catch them when it hasn't rained in awhile are super fast and you really need to think about ball placement. It is pricy at times, but definitely worth it.
Good course
Good course but bonkers need to be done before the start of play begins in the morning
No marshals?
Pace of play was abysmal on the back nine. Our group saw the very attentive refreshment cart operator no fewer than six times, but there were no marshals to be found. I understand Sunday golf can be slow, but pick up the pace people. Most of us don't want to watch you line up a put for a minute and a half on each of your four putts, and then have to watch the rest of your group do the same. But I digress, fact is with no marshals helping keep the pace of play the course just racks up the cash from beverage and snack sales to a bunch of bored and tired folks.
Not my favorite - sorry to say.
After hearing about how great this course was we decided to try it out. Unfortunately, playing between houses is not one of my favorite things to do. Greens were extremely challenging - the only thing missing was the windmill and the clowns mouth. Course was beautiful - but pace of play was slow.
Poor customer service
I was very disappointed in the way I was treated by the staff .Being a previous resident from Suffolk and my friend is a member here staff was very rude. I would never play this course again.
One of the best courses around
This course was in great shape the greens were perfect. I enjoyed the challenge of putting the greens they are fast and have lots of break. Riverfront has to be one of the BEST courses in the area!
Great bang for the buck!
The course is well maintained for this time of year, and the deal I got on Golfnow was unbeatable. This was my forth time using golfnow and I have to say it was so easy that i may end up playing to much golf.(If there's such a thing)
Very nice course & we got a super deal
Got a vgreat deal at a 12:30 tee time. The weather had been bad for 4 or 5 days and the course was soft but still in great condition. The only down side was cart path's only and my misses balls were always on the opposite side of the fairway. Had a great time!
Staff rude!
Overall, the track not bad. But, very late getting us off for a defined tee time. Rude staff, wont be back!
Beautiful!
Riverfront is very challenging.
The Fairways, greens and bunkers are in pristine condition. Greens have a lot of undulation and as always, very slow! Pace of play is also somewhat slow.
Other than those 2 caveats it is the nicest course in Tidewater.
Excellent value for the scenary
An excellent challenging course especially playing from the tips, which changes everything. Excellent views of the James River. Would definitely play this course again when I am in town. $7 for a small bucket of range balls is a tad stiff though.
Great setup and condition
Great course. Staff was very helpful and friendly. It was a light sprinkle on us most of the front nine but course was still in great condition and held up well. After lunch which clubhouse had full bar and numerous options for food the rain had stopped and course dried quickly. All in all a great time by my party. Will definitely be back.
The course provides you a lot of looks, fairways and greens in great shape, you can pick your degree of difficulty on most every hole
