Decent track, overpriced
Pros:
-Great fairways if you like zoysia
-Greens generally above average
-Great views
-Convenient location
-nice range/practice area
Cons:
-a few interesting holes, but considering the land, design is somewhat mundane.
-too pricey ($75 to walk on Sunday afternoon/$85 to ride) Weekday rate is $20 cheaper. Only a small discount for nine holes. Price seems about $15 - $20 too high all the way around considering the quality of course. However, it is a little cheaper than several course nearby (Spring Creek, Poplar Grove, Birdwood, Stoney Creek) but not near the same quality in my opinion.
Will probably continue to play once or twice a year, but would definitely play more if price was more appealing.
Overpriced and overcharged
I Have played Old Trail many times over the past year.
Greens are always in good shape.
Sand traps are horrible, most clay with quarter inch of sand. The traps have been horrible for years. A lot of the regulars have a local Old Trail rule, toss balls out of traps. $75.00 for a course with clay traps is silly.
Fairways are in good shape but almost always soggy. The course doesn’t drain well. Cart path only is the norm, not the exception. Pro shop personnel are friendly but executive leadership isn’t.
The views of the blue ridge are beautiful but from a design perspective they didn’t make very good use of a beautiful property
We played with a member and were charged a little over $70.00. Their website states that the rate is $75.00 but a twenty percent discount for playing with a member, so $60.00. We challenged the price but were told that the “guest rate was wrong”. It’s the rate on their website. Really poorly done.
They are doing a good job of managing Covid 19 pandemic.
Way over priced
Tee boxes were ok. Greens were good but very firm. .Fairways were coming in nicely. I would give this course a 3 star rating Sand traps some were red clay/dirt. Spring Creek is a much better course for the money. I wouldn't pay over $50.
All That's Missing is Value
This was my first time playing here in a couple years and only 2nd time in the past 5 or 6 years. But each time I come back I'm reminded of how pleasant a course Old Trail is to play.
With a front 9 that features few trees at all, it's great to have plenty of room to work out your game's quirks before the targets and fairways narrow for the back half. The course is inviting with generous landing areas, plenty of space around the greens, and Zoysia grass in the fairways that is a joy to play on.
The split personality of the course's layout allows for a nice variety of holes and there are quite a few I'm a fan of including the par-5 1st, par-4 4th, par-5 10th, and par-4 11th. 16-17-18 is a challenging trio to finish.
The conditions were overall very good for this time of year, just some spotty tee boxes and the occasional patch of rough. Fairways and greens were smooth and looked great.
The staff does a great job here, being not only friendly but attentive as well. The welcome sight of a ranger on the course made a huge difference as it was pretty busy when I played. He was able to break up some slow groups in front of me to keep the pace just under 4 hours.
A grass driving range is the highlight of the off-course amenities at the moment with the restaurant closed and the putting green hole-less. Pool noodles were present in each cup on the course and other measures had been taken for the safety of all.
The only shortcoming for Old Trail is a value proposition. Nearly $50 to walk on a weekday afternoon is great for a course like Spring Creek down the road, but this course doesn't meet that highest of public golf standards and so it's a tougher ask for me. Many folks may find the fantastic views of the surrounding mountains worth the premium, however.
Still, it's a very solid course that I intend to make the drive from Richmond to play again soon.

Awesome Course
Very nice course, some tough holes. Course was in excellent condition. Bit pricey for us but we got a decent deal through Golf Now.
Great course
Lush conditions from the tee box through the greens.
Deep Rough- World Class Views
This course was EPIC- but spray the ball- & there is a good chance you wont find it! The mountain vistas were remarkable- such a beautiful course. Fairways & Greens were in great shape- I live in the home of American Golf- Pinehurst NC- But will add Old Trail to our annual Greenbrier/Homestead fall trip
Really enjoyed.
Great layout. Friendly people. I brought my son (11) and got to play 2 rounds for less than $100. Very friendly. Course was in great shape except for the tee boxes. Played from the blacks and it was very long. Could barely reach the fairway on #1.
Great Experience
I had an amazing experience at Old Trail. The staff were incredible and were genuinely concerned with ensuring I had a great experience at the facility. The Bermuda grass was starting to turn, but the condition of the course was great. Greens were very fast and smooth.
This place is a GEM
I typically play in the deep south florida, NC, Georgia. The grasses are different and def a great change of pace being that the fairways here are the best ive been on! utterly perfect- Fast greens and clean tee boxes makes for a perfect score from me. WELL worth the price of admission--this is a must play!! Played from the blacks and was a lot if fun and still chjallenging. Met up w a few gentleman that made the round even betters they were regulars here(one fella lived on the 10th) and were able to help me around the spread. Very nice ppl and an even nicer track. A+++++
Fun and Challenging
The course layout was a lot of fun not your typical course.Back and forth..I like that in a course and the fairways are in excellent shape it was like playing on AstroTurf .Greens were fast and true .Needs to be played
Fantastic!!
This course is in flawless shape from tee to green. Fast pace 3 5 hour round......great golf experience. Highly recommend this course.
Solid choice for play
Old trail is in very good shape
We played in around 3:25 with nobody in front of us... so very nice
No on course cart service so just need to plan around that
For life of me don’t understand why the putting green is “closed” at 7PM... if you wanted to putt at midnight with a head lamp...who cares?
Still way too many ball marks unfixed on the greens...cmon folks
Almost TOO perfect
Let me preface this by saying, Ive only been playing 2 years. But Ive caught the bug and have been playing every chance i get (I shoot for 2x's--but at least once a week)!!! I try to platy only nice courses so star rating is a major contributing factor when deciding a new place to play. I ONLY visit a public course if it is at least 4stars. Now...of all the places I've been to Old Trail is THE NICEST!!! I love this track. The fairways are like carpet, I didn't want to leave a divot. It looked like someone had just run the vacuum! Clean tee boxes w/ some of the most stunningly breathtaking views. When you come play Old Trail, the Mountains are the backdrop for your round!! The greens run true and offer some challenges. I have 0 complaints, NOT ONE! When u book a round here, just remember your playing less than HALF its ACTUAL value(this course is worth $70-$90 per round). Enjoy
Great Round of Golf
Excellent course, fantastic condition, “carpet” fairways, superb and consistent greens. Beautiful views. Excellent practice facilities.
