Sharpstown Park Golf Course

About
Originally known as the Sharpstown Country Club back in the 1950s and '60s, and former host of the Houston Open, the course shut down amid financial turmoil until the city of Houston scooped it up in the late 1970s and hired Jay Riviere to renovate the layout.
With its generous fairways, the course is primarily known as a hacker-friendly track. Wayward tee shots are recoverable because of the relatively sparse tree-lined fairways. Even though there are some rather long par 4s, you'll be able to fire away with your driver on the straightaway holes.
The final stretch of golf is the best, with a few short par 4s and 3s as well as a birdie-able par 5.
Note that they refer to the net along No. 6 as the Zindler Net-it's a wire contraption installed to protect the home of local newsman Marvin Zindler, who lived near the course in the 1970s and '80s. Houstonites know Zindler for his infamous association with the famed La Grange chicken ranch.
Getting there : From Hwy 59 south take the Bell Aire Blvd. exit and turn right. When you come to Harbor Town Dr., turn right and the course is just down the road on the left side.

Course has really improved
A while back I gave this course a really bad review. This time around, the conditions have greatly improved. The greens were just about perfect. Bunkers were wet because of rain overnight but still very playable. I was impressed at how much better shape the course is now.
A great deal
IDK what all the complaining about conditions, this course has been in great shape for years. I play it maybe once a month, as of July 2021 it was near perfect. A long but good walking course. The only knock I have is greenskeeper needs to spray the Dalis grass clumps or they will take over the Bermuda. Also no driving range.
Prince's burgers and beer for sale, good prices. One of the starters can be a little surly but it's nothing like the rude staff at Gus Wortham. Weekday senior is $15 to walk. Replay is free except $10 cart fee. You just can't beat this deal Sometimes there are tournaments so best call before walking up. On weekends it costs more and it can get pretty slow but that's golf.
Rough shape
Greens were recently punched but that is the least of the problems you'll encounter. The greens are currently trash on all but 2 or 3 greens. Most are growing some type of fungus that is eating up the grass.
Conditions/Etiquette
The conditions were OK on the fairway but anything off the fairway was dried mud and dust. Had someone hit a ball the next hole over and had to wait 15 min to tee off at the ninth hole because people kept on driving on the fairway. If you can't hit them straight every time or if you like to play with people who know basic etiquette don't play here.
No golf etiquette
Just cuz you buy $2,000 worth of golf clubs and designer clothes wont help you' to have a better game.
Most players are nice, others don't care how bad they hold up gameplay. They refuse to let a single to play through that is faster or better skilled.
Easy to play
Very forgiving! Not to much trouble. Easy to get to anywhere in Houston!
What you expect for the price
Cheap enough, however pace of play is poor, waiting at every hole. Condition of fairways and greens not the greatest and the driving range is poor.
Slow play
Started at 2:40p. There were so many beginners out there. The pace of play was very slow. Lucky to finish 9 holes when it was getting dark enough to find ball.
Solid Course
Solid course. Would play again. Not the best municipal course in Houston but on par with Herrmann.
Where's the Marshall?
Pace of Play is normally ridiculous on the weekend, which is why I opted for a Tuesday afternoon tee time. Well, it felt like a Saturday. My tee time was at 2:30. I tee'd off at 2:35. I was on hole 9 at 5:30. Unacceptable!
