Long considered the jewel of the Gulf Coast, NorthShore is known for its famous stretch of holes on the back nine (13-16) set against the backdrop of the bay. Built in 1985 by Bruce Devlin and Robert von Hagge, this semi-private course is available to the public due to reciprocal arrangements with several Coastal Bend hotels.

The course is not particularly long (6,805 yards), and there are not many trees, but winds often blow 20-40 MPH on good days, and the design is loaded with bunkers, water hazards, and side-hill lies. The fairways are 419 Bermuda, and the slick, elevated Tifdwarf greens are known for being in excellent condition year-round.

Course knowledge makes a difference here, so it's to your advantage to play with a member or schedule multiple rounds while you're in the area. The design features several blind tee shots. The more difficult back nine, while more open, is considered more of a position golf course.

Some have compared the famous stretch on the back nine to playing on a resort course in Hawaii. It starts with the signature 13th hole, which plays from a spectacular tee over an inlet of the bay down to a massive green cuddled up against the sand and surf. Watch out for the wind and the ocean spray while you're putting.

Nos. 14 and 15 play along the bay. Keep your tee shot left on the 531-yard 14th to avoid the cliffs looming right on the second shot. The 352-yard 15th hole doglegs right and plays over an inlet just past the turn. The green here isn't an inviting target-it's tiny, elevated, and surrounding by waste areas and a bunker.

You might be able to finally take a breath after No. 16, a long par 3 into a deep green with the Gulf on the left.

Getting there : From I-37 south, take Hwy 181 north. Exit at NorthShore Blvd. and turn right. Drive a short distance and look for the course entrance off of Broadway.

Past it’s prime

This magnificent setting deserves a golf course as good. One almost every hole, the view was magnificent. The design of the course is challenging, but fair. An intermediate golfer should have no trouble from the front tees.
However, the condition of the course is poor. Old, broken cement slabs of the golf cart path constantly jar the riders. Uneven tee boxes force errors to occur. A severe lack of signage leaves the first-time player wondering where to go.
Sadly, this magnificent golf course has seen better days.

A Challenging Course

This course has many challenges with the wind being number one. The holes along the Gulf are very scenic and challenging to play. The greens are mostly raised and sloped which makes it difficult to hold your shot. Fast greens make for a challenging game of golf. Overall a good test.

Golf Now discount

This course is an expensive course @ $35 to $50 a round and golf now had a discounted rate for two tee times for $20 with a cart. You can’t beat that! The course is nice and very challenging, add wind and it’ll kick your butt! Staff could use a little bit more training on costume service though. I felt like I was look down upon since I booked the time from golf now. Other than that, overall good golfing experience. Their golf cart needs to be updated.

Won't Be Going Back

When we came in to get our starters slip. The gentleman on duty was snide and condescending. Not friendly at all. Maybe because we used Golf Now to book. I'm not sure the why. Just very snotty. The course was in terrible shape. Greens were burnt and dry. Fairways were a mix of dried out grass to that horrible ground cover that isn't really grass. I can see it being very tough when or if it is in good shape. For me and the rest of my playing partners .... We won't be returning

Challenging course especially with the wind. The practice greens are not in good shape but the actual greens on the course are in great shape. Price is good when on a hot deal.
