Nice and early! Photo submitted by mikefish10 on 09/21/2020
Improving
Can see the effort going into the course, all bunkers nearly summer ready, greens in great condition and great to play a course without having to use the blue tees.
Will return!
Always a good bet in bad weather
We play a lot of golf at Blakes during the winter as it's playable virtually all year round (barring when it snows).
Tee boxes are a bit scruffy at this time of the year but that's no surprise, the fairways drain well, the rough is cut way back and the greens are fast and pretty receptive.
Great Course During The Wet
Course plays very well during these wetter conditions
No sand in bunkers. £29 to play
Nice course but changed layout. No sand in bunkers and they whacked the price up from £24 to £29. Scorecards were printed paper. Staff didn’t want to know. Won’t be playing again till bunkers sorted and price drops. Can see this course falling by the wayside. Far to expensive for what it is
Let down
The course layout was very good and had the potential to be a good round of golf. Unfortunately tee times are book with 5 mins between each making it impossible to play. It would be nice to play if there were bigger gaps between tee times. This was a painfully slow round of golf with queues on every hole. It’s a shame they try to cram so many people on the course. I would save your money and play somewhere else.
Nice course
Played this for first time in about 10 years. Fantastic drive into car par and club house grounds. Course in very nice condition even with it being quite dry. The greens are impeccable. Little bit confusing as to where some tee boxes are but nothing to serious. 12th through hedge could be marked out better. The little 100yd island 8th is lovely. Especially when you land on it. Enjoyed it here. Will be back. Great value for money at £24. Ps. We walked. But they do a deal of 2x rounds of golf plus buggy for £62. Enjoy
On the up
Definitely of course I’ll play again, very dry Fairways but greens are in great Condition. Bunkers are on the to-do list but I will placed and with the right maintenance will work. They sent little pro shop and bar area for after the round. Will definitely return.
Dreadful pace of play
Course was dry but greens were in reasonable condition albeit mixed speeds. Tee boxes could have done with a water. 2 large societies out before us which led to 4 sets of players waiting by hole 6. Called pro shop to find no Marshall on duty. No half way hut either which could have been a money spinner. For the price it was good but it could have been much better with little effort.
Game of two halfs
Course layout and design is really good with some characterful holes. Maintenance let down the overall experience of the course.
The welcome by staff was non existent with no interaction at all and the bar area / atmosphere was well below any expectations.
All could be good if more management and investment.
Blake’s on a Sunday morning
Can’t grumble with the price, tee to green was fine, greens watered and in good condition. As a low is handicapper who does sometimes go wayward, you can get yourself out of trouble . Tea, coffee and sausage rolls from the shed on 10. Will be back again…..nothing to fault tbh.
Too busy
Course conditions overall can’t complain however the course was so busy & we was waiting on every tee box which was fustrating.
Cheap and cheerful???
I was a member at Blake’s around 18 years ago when this course was in tip top condition everywhere, but I was shocked to see that whoever owns this course now really has very little interest in it anymore.
Tee blocks are scraggy, and the fairways looked like they hadn’t been mowed in a few days. Clumps of clover and weeds all over the fairways, where in some places you couldn’t tell the difference between rough and fairway.
Greens were ok, but I’ve played on better public course greens to be fair.
Refugees from the hotel opposite having a pic-nic on the 14th and allowing kids to run and play on the fairway and Green says everything you need to know about Blake’s!
I wish I had paid £2 more per player and played a proper club like Theydon Bois, where the Green staff clearly take pride in their work and prepare a course as it should be.
Clubhouse inside looks dated, and I’m sure it’s the same carpet from 18 + years ago.
Happy to say that I won’t be going back again, but if you are not too fussy about your course £18 pp is probably up your street.
Best value. Massively improved.
You will not find a better course for the money within this proximity to London. It's cheaper than an hour at the Greenwich golf range!
I played Blakes last year and have to say the improvement in the greens is immeasurable. They were genuinely running like a course you'd pay 3x-4x the price for.
If you're after a cheap round to practice or dust off the winter cobwebs, you'll be hard pressed to find anything better.
