The Quarry, Ironstone Course
It's been at least 8 years since I've been back to golf The Quarry. It has on offer 27 holes designed by Canada's own Les Furber. The Quarry consists of three solid nine hole tracks (Granite, Ironstone & Slate) each of which will reward sound course management and good ball striking. As in previous years my brother and I are competing again in the World Amateur Match Race so today's match on the Slate and Ironstone courses was arranged by our competitors.
Within the confines of a magnificent club house is their full service restaurant and a well stocked pro-shop. Check-in was efficient and cordial. After spending 30 minutes on the driving range resurrecting a swing that was in hibernation for the winter and then another 30 minutes on the large practice green hoping to find some form and touch that had laid dormant for five months. The practice areas available at The Quarry are a great addition that golfers would be encouraged to take advantage of.
Each stretch of nine holes have five decks (tee boxes) to play from, so its up to golfers to decide how much of a challenge they want to take on. Todays round started under blue skies with scattered clouds and would be played from Deck 4 which plays out to 6,048 yards. The tee boxes are level and all of a good size and were great platforms from which to determine where your drives needed to go. For being early in the season, the fairways were in decent condition and rolled out and played well. Depending how far you were off the fairways, the rough varied in length but overall it wasn't too penalizing as you get still get a club on your mishits. There are a few elevation changes. Fairways are very generous in width and remarkably there are no straight fairways, they gently turn left and right. There is no shortage of the usual hazards and the bunkers and water hazards are placed strategically and will attract their share of poorly played shots. The well proportioned greens played and putted consistently.
Players must consider many of the well placed hazards from tee to green to successfully navigate these holes and birdie opportunities abound with properly executed shots. There is great variety and each hole has character of its own with no two alike. The Quarry's Ironstone & Slate courses are nice tracks and will challenge golfers of all skill levels.

Good Layout
It is located in N.E. Edmonton in the river valley and is a fairly wide open course, however if you get off the fairways the grass will likely mean you have a lost ball. It is a well designed course with well placed bunkers and risk reward holes. The fairways are quite hard and sometimes sparse. The grass was cut too short. The greens were in good condition.
Not really a good value course.
The Quarry, Granite Course
The remnants of an old sand & gravel pit were wonderfully transformed into a 27 hole playground for golfers. Everything you'd expect to find on an above average course can be found here. This includes an excellent practice area, large flat tee boxes, wide rolling fairways, expansive greens, terrific bunkering, water hazards, risk/reward options, innumerable elevation changes, huge clubhouse & pro shop. Golfers have five tee boxes to choose from and how well your round goes will depend on whether you're playing over your head (ie: wrong tees) or to your skill level. Make the right choice at the start of your game & The Quarry will provide you with an enjoyable round.
