West at White Pines Golf Course
About
Situated just 30 minutes from downtown Chicago, White Pines Golf Club has been a popular spot for both locals and visitors. The club offers two courses, the East and the West. The West Course is longer than the East by 400 yards and considered slightly more challenging. The layout is relatively tight and there is an abundance of trees, which means you'll need to be accurate to do well. The greens are large and challenging with difficult-to-read breaks. There is also minimal, but strategic bunkering along the greensides. The fairways provide plenty of variety with some that are narrow and heavily tree-lined and others that are wide with no trees in sight. The golf course has several challenging holes but it's forgiving enough for beginners to approach with confidence.

Good Layout, Veru good course conditions
The course layout was interesting, enjoyed it. The course conditions were very good. Now, the cart I had would display a message that I was in a restricted area every time I was 3 feet off the cart path. No one else seemed to have this issue. Very annoying. We played the front 1:50. The back was a different story. We played the back in 2:35. We saw several course rangers but they seemed to be just driving around. The group 2 ahead of use seemed to be the problem. Oh yeah, we were on one green and two carts circled the green. I don't care if you play WP every day and know shortcuts to the next tee, it was very disrespectful and should not be allowed/tolerated.
Nice course very slow play
This course is not easy. Very narrow and plays more even narrower because of mature trees growing into the fairway. Has its fair share of water trouble too. The main reason for slow play is way too many beginner golfers wasting time looking for balls. Please just drop and go already. Rangers were around but basically nice Walmart greeters that didn't address the slow groups. Course was in good shape and enjoyable to play, but 5 1/2 hours is a bit much especially since they supposedly strive for 4 hour 15 minute rounds.
Never Again
I only rated pace of play 1 because 0 wasn’t an option. I’ve never experienced the nonsense that happened at White Pines. A 6some of ladies was only part of the problem. We were the 4th group on a par 3 twice on back nine. The guys in front of the ladies spent 10 minutes looking for a ball, then the guy comes back to the tee to hit again. A guy in the group behind the ladies played the back tees even tho he couldn’t hit the ball 200 yds. 5 hr round was ridiculous. At least the brat I had was excellent.
Things are in disarray
Things are in disarray. We played the east course and there were no hole markers at the tee boxes. They have nice new GPS carts, but they were not working. No distance readings and the gps kept telling you that you were in an unauthorized area and needed to turn back. A couple holes were also missing flags on the flag poles. All-in-all the course was in pretty good condition. The course also played pretty quick with not backups.
Continues to disappoint
Played this course 3 years ago and swore I wouldn't do it again it was so bad, but I had talked to some other golfers and they said it was better. NOT TRUE. Although the greens don't have wasps nesting in them this time on the course we played, all else is pretty much the same. Cart paths are almost unpassable. Tees are mostly hard, traps are terrible with weeds growing in them. Signage to identify holes was missing and no guide to which hole was next was nonexistent.
Other issues. GPS on carts was useless.
It didn't display distances kept going to adds or saying we were in restricted area even when we were on cart paths. Counter person didn't know how to use computer. Wanted to see my online reservation before check-in which we found out I didn't need. Forgot to mention that they were starting on 10 so found no starter at 1. Just a poor experience as to what it could be.
Good value
Good course in good shape. Need to work on the sand traps and cut down the greens a bit.
This coarse has been better. I still enjoy playing there. This year it seems short on groundskeepers.
Snail’s pace
The tee times are not staggered well, resulting in an extremely slow round. (Like watching a snail move across a driveway!)
The dead grass clippings left in the rough are a nice touch, adding the activity of finding your ball an extra challenge to the already slow round.
Friendly Place to Play
The staff here is very friendly. Bill Roper is a great head pro and the entire staff are great to deal with. Personally I think the West Course is a bit better but the East Course is certainly playable.
pace of play was horrible
i play this course a lot and it’s good value for your money. i also expect a slow round on sunday but this was horrible. 5.5 hours to play 18. we complained to the ranger about the group in front of us many times and they told us “there’s not much we can do”. isn’t that literally your job????
the halfway house also wasn’t open and the car girl had no food so we were basically stuck for 5.5 hours with nothing to do or eat and just hit a shot every 10 minutes or so. it was awful.
$69 for everything to be broken or gone
GPS in carts not connected to network , yet also no yardage sticks? $69 for that? I get it’s april but you’ve known about the 80 degree Sunday for a couple weeks. Waaaay too many other munis around to pay for that again. And pick up the sticks.
Really wet
Not fair to rate courses when they are saturated and CPO. Lotsa walking in standing water. But pace of play was among the worst I've ever experienced. SLOW wouldn't even explain it. If I weren't retired I would have quit! 6 hours...
