Super Nice Course
Has been a while since I played this course, but still a great place. On the day we played the weather was excellent, had not rained in 5 days, but the course was very damp. Showed signs of recent aerification on the greens and fairways, looked as if it had been done the prior week. The greens were on the slow side, but very playable. In the fairways the ball had very little roll and most of the time had mud on it. This being said the course played long, but was in great shape, and over all enjoyed the round. The courts is very open for the most part, and water comes into play more on the back nine. once you get to far off the fairway very heavy heather is abundant, but you have missed your target badly to get there. This is a course that you will want to play more than once, and is a very good value. and well worth the drive (14 minutes) from Lexington.
Lovely Course
I play Houston Oaks as much as any course in the state, each time is just as lovely. The course is always in fabulous shape. Tight fairways, smooth (but quick greens.) Front nine gives you some good views of the rural Kentucky horse country, while the back nine has more of a residential routing. I truly believe that #4 is the hardest golf hole in the state, especially when the wind is blowing into like it usually is.
In my opinion, there is not a better value for your money in the state of Kentucky. Put Houston Oaks anywhere else and it is probably a $100 golf course. But we're lucky enough to have it stay sub $50.
Worst Closer I’ve Ever Experienced
I played the golf course today and had a tee time at 4:10pm. We kept pace of play the entire day and honestly enjoyed the course itself. The young blonde lady working the counter was lovely and very kind getting us started. The middle aged closer guy of the day on the other hand is a jerk (and I’m pretty forgiving of that kind of thing). I’ve played a lot of golf 2 and 3 times a week. I’ve never experienced something quite this rude. First, the cart message started early and told guests to drive back to the clubhouse 20 minutes before 8:00pm. No golf course takes 20 minutes to get back to the clubhouse. On top of that we go to putt out on our last hole (which was 17, not 18) and were headed to the clubhouse less than two minutes later. We had a 4 foot putt for our match 2 vs. 2 and the hateful closer comes around, pulls up to our hole, and tells us “I need you to pick up your ball now and go to the clubhouse.” He continues to flag down the guy behind us and tells him to get in his cart and follow him to the clubhouse. I don’t care who you are, that’s unbelievably rude. If he would have said “can you all finish this putt and head back” it would have been no big deal, but “pick up your ball” is ridiculous. I’ve worked retail, I get it, the staff wants to get home. 2 minutes isn’t going to hurt anyone.
The gentlemen behind us called him out on it (who apparently is a regular), and immediately was given the “I’m just doing what i’m told” line. Oh, and magically our cart went substantially faster going back to the clubhouse. It’s pretty rude to slow a gps cart down so your twilight times don’t get to finish the course. I don’t know if it’s always that way, but that’s still not ok.
I would have been back, likely multiple times, as we travel the short jaunt from lexington to many courses to get away from the hateful folks working in their clubhouses. I’ll go back to Southwind in Winchester where we actually get treated right. Sure, the course cod irons aren’t as good, but at least we get treated right. St the end of the night there was plenty of light to finish and that’s just rude.
I’ve offered them the opportunity to make it right but I doubt that email will hit a desk that cares. However, if they can’t treat people better than that someone else will get my business. And fyi you’ll be getting a call from the guy who finished behind us. He was audibly mad.
Again, the young lady working in the clubhouse is very kind, and the course was enjoyable, but they likely lost 5 customers in 5 minutes. They may not care with the golf courses as crowded as they are right now but if they do make this right, we might be back. It’s a nice course and greens are nice and fast, but customer service goes a long way. I don’t write reviews so trust me when I say this guy was rude. I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt and say maybe he had had a long day. Either way, getting forced off a course is just downright rude when there’s light left to play. It wasn’t fully dark until we got nearly to I75 in route to Lex. Long story short, don’t punish golfers for taking advantage of a clear day and a little extra light In early September.
Fun Course
Had a great time on my late season round. Solid layout with several challenging driving Holes. Greens and fairways in superb condition.
Shocked by the negative reviews: I suspect you have had a lot of people being called out on poor behavior or treatment of the course.
Great
The course is in great shape even with all the rain the last few days. Greens were firm & rolled true.
Thanks for the review! We are lucky that our course drains so well. So happy you enjoyed your experience and we hope to see you back soon!
Very nice
First time here. Loved it! Challanging but I like it that way. I will return
Awesome! We are so glad to hear it. Looking forward to seeing you out next time!
Top 3 Course In Lexington Area
I love playing this course. Great variety in the type of holes. They have a range detector in every cart so you know your exact yardage every shot. Love it.
Thanks for the review. We are glad you had a good experience and hope to see you soon!
Very nice course and friendly staff
The course was recommended by some of the local golfers in Maysville - me being from Tennessee, wasn’t sure about that ~45 Minute drive to Paris - but after playing a round at this course - I couldn’t have gotten a better recommendation! Very nice course, well maintained and friendly staff made this a great outing!
Good shape
Course is in good shape, greens are a little slow from normal. I don't know what they spend on maintenance, but it can't be a lot. They have better conditions than most courses their size, and I bet they don't do as many rounds as some of the others.
Thanks for the review! You may have caught us on a day that we were top dressing greens (we do this about every other week). This can cause them to be a tad slower the day of, but we do this so that we are able to keep our greens firmer, faster and healthier! We hope to see you out again soon!
Love this course!
I think Houston Oaks is one of the top 4-5 courses in the Central Kentucky area. It's challenging but fair. The greens roll true and fairly fast, but they also hold approach shots pretty well. I would recommend this course to anyone visiting Central Kentucky.
Thanks for the review! We may be a little biased, but we would say we are one of the top as well! :) Hope to have you visit Houston Oaks again soon!
Still in good shape.
Course is in good shape, greens still healing from dry ject. Putts rolled fine, with speeds close to 10
Same old course
If you've been here before you know that this course is always in good shape. Cold day, so I had the course to myself. Everything was in good shape, the greens have had dryject done to them. I would say they are 90% healed. They ran around 9 and smooth enough that no putts were changed because of the dryject. If we get some warm weather you probably won't be able to tell in 2 weeks.
Solid course
I have played this course several times and it remains one of the better courses to play in central Ky. The greens are almost fully healed from the recent work on them. Plenty of water to play around and nice fairways to hit from. I will be back!
Great Layout!
Course is well worth the drive. Layout is awesome, along with the course conditions. Staff is super friendly. Will definitively be back to play.
Thank you for the 5 star review! See you again soon!
Thank you for reviewing our course and recommending us to future golfers!
