I'll be honest with you, my rating is definitely skewed by the fact that I learned the game of golf at this course and for that reason, I'm always going to think fondly of Sligo. That said, I do believe it's worthy of five stars.
It's a fun, easy, short executive 9. Big hitters will be able to drive almost all of the Par 4's and low handicappers will breeze through this place without breaking a sweat. If you want a real challenge, look elsewhere, but if you want a relaxed round on a well-maintained course, this is the place for you.
Greens and fairways are in excellent condition. The course is a little hilly but easily walkable (the short holes help with that). The creek runs through most of the course but really only comes into play on a few holes and newer golfers won't be forced to carry over any significant hazards until the 9th hole.
While it's great that this course caters to newer golfers, that can sometimes generate pace of play problems. If you get out in the morning, you'll be fine, but afternoon and evening rounds can drag on if you get stuck behind slower groups.
Manage your expectations and go in expecting a casual round at a small muni and you'll have a great time.
Nice 9 holes..
Greens were in outstanding shape. Fairways were less than ideal. I'm 61 and walked and it tired me out since almost every hole was downhill and then uphill. Very hilly. Staff was outstanding.
nice, close, cheap, and slow
It's a good course.
It's a fun course and its fairly easy and short.
If its nice out and a weekend/holiday it is SLOW!
took 2.5 hours to get through 9 holes.
Sligo Golf Course
This is a very recreational course setting; this reservation was mainly to trial some clubs. The course is not marked well, and holes are drivable, so most golfers will not get an opportunity to work with fairway metals.
Great, fun course
I loved the course. I'm not a very good golfer, so this course was forgiving enough for me to enjoy each hole. Greens and fairways were very well kept. They have the footgolf holes on the same course but the soccer guys didn't really get in the way. I just wish it were 18 holes for the same price. That's probably too much to ask, though.
A Good Walk Not Spoiled
Sligo Creek is an easy course to walk, with a mix of less challenging and more challenging holes. Most of the par 4s are short, but a couple require a tee shot over a stream or hazard. The par 3s played 150-180 yards. The par 4 9th requires a very good tee shot to get around the corner for the approach shot. The greens were in pretty good shape. Overall, a nice way to get in 9 holes.
Best 9 Hole course in the area
This is a great 9 hole course at a reasonable cost. Course condition is always good barring playing to soon after greens are airrated.
perfect for the beginner!
I have only been playing a few months. This is the perfect course for rookies like me. And with the hills, if you are looking for a little exercise while you play, it's all inclusive.
I will be back!!!
A Good Value - perfect for the mid-range golfer
A very nice course layout, neatly tucked away near downtown Silver Spring.
I like Sligo just like my woman: cheap and easy!
It's everything I want in playing golf: Short, wide open, well maintained, fairways; inexpensive, and convenient. Keep your endless, expensive, narrow courses and give me a quick, cheap 9 holes where I'm on at 10:40 and off at 12:30 -ON A WEEKEND! You get the full range of fellow golfers, from bohemian sandalled locals, to well heeled, 7 handicapped octogenarians, and everything in between. I've played it for 35 years, and the fairways and greens have never been better. Life is hard enough. Give me easy for life's diversions. You gotta play Sligo at least once before it's all said and done.
Nice time
Its was my first time going to the golf course and its definitely a hidden gem. I'm new to golf (1 year) and looking for nice 9 hole course to get my game better and Sligo Creek Golf Course is the answer. Very friendly staff and very pleasant people in general. The course was in very good shape and cant wait to go back to play
Sligo dtill lives
Ah Sligo Creek Golf great course for beginners and skilled players. Did you know Sligo was Indian Springs Country Club prior to Beltway construction? The Beltway cut the course in two, so it moved out to Layhill rd (country club closed for housing development) and Sligo is what remains. The course is holding its own despite county planners trying to make soccer complex(imagine how much they would have to do to make Sligo level). So now we have to play Sligo often to gold off the planners, lets get going Silver Spring we still need to help make sure Sligo is there for future generations.
Pleasant outing with friends
3 ladies walked 9 holes. Some of us were beginners and the course was good because it is not too long for them. Has some tricky spots over water and doglegs. We had a great time. Staff was very friendly. Want to go back.
Good for a quick 9
Nice good course for a quick round of 9. Marshals needed to improve pace of play on weekends. Sand traps need reconditioning.
Great value!
Great 9 hole course. Friendly staff. Good pace of play.
Great day for golf
I have lived in Silver Spring a long time, and this was the first time that I have played this course. Thanks to Golfnow.com and the hot deals. I was pleasantly surprised to see such a great course so close the interstate. Thought that it would be a little back and forth kinda place, but was surprised to see how much elevation change there was. Great 9 hole course.
Great course for practicing all sorts of shots.
A good work out. Walk the course and enjoy nature also.
Decent even after a Downpour!!!
I played right after it had rained and the course was a little difficult to play. I am only a beginner but on a dry day, this would not be a bad course to play. Was able to walk this course in about 2 hours.
The greens were fantastic.
The general manager for this course has done a fabulous job in getting this course into great shape over the past 2 years. For the beginner to the low handicap, this course offers enough challenges to make your round enjoyable.
Great 9 hole track for all facets of your game
I play this course several times a year and am never disappointed with its' condition. You can usually walk-on with little or no wait time. The only drawbacks are the lack of a driving range or practice bunker. My only complaint on my most recent outing is that I went on a holiday, and two groups were put in front of mine, causing a 20 minute delay in our reserved tee time. Overall, a great value and a definite must if you just want to tune up your game or don't have time for a full 18.
