15th green, one of the few that wasn’t all patchy on the edges and gives you a nice scenery of those pine trees. Photo submitted by BuffaloBen15 on 10/26/2020
Early season
For early season, plus all the rain and snow… it was in good shape
Just OK
The course was in pretty rough shape. The greens were extremely bumpy and there was sand throughout much of the course around the greens and approaches. It was very early in the season though so that must be taken into consideration. Overall the course is relatively short. The pace moved well. The staff is very nice and understanding as I was offered a rain check if I did not complete my round as I booked a round later in the afternoon.
Sandy and dusty
The fairways and greens are all sand. Invisible bunkers everywhere. Clothes and clubs completely covered in dust even after it rained.

No longer worth it
Played this course about a week ago. Was $40 and not worth $10 to play. I have been playing this course for years and have seen it go more and more downhill in the last 3-4 years. Fairways and first cuts completely missing grass, greens with craters the size of club heads, and the greenskeepers taking flags out with 90 minutes of daylight left. Even an awesomely designed front 9 won’t keep bringing me back.
What is going on with the back nine?
I’ve played here before and always thought it was well maintained for the most part. That was until I got to the back nine yesterday. Idk if the sprinklers are broken to what but half the fairways are dirt now, the tee box’s are so try and hard, you can’t get a tee into it. One of the par 3’s on the back doesn’t have a playable green right now so the cup is at the end of the fairway. Arizona course conditions on a Michigan course is not a good look. Not to keep complaining but our golf cart also died on hole 10.
Staff was nice and the dog is friendly
Course conditions extremely poor
I get it. Close to the river, floods, rainy season all contribute to the worst of course conditions. This hasn’t changed in years. I thought it would be good to play again and for the price we were charged for nine holes we thought this would be fun to play again. Totally wrong! Not a good value!
Fern Hill is a total mess
Do not, I repeat DO NOT play this course. The entire course resides within a floodplain for the Clinton River. Due to excessive rain, the entire course was totally under water for over 3 weeks. Most of the grass is dead or gone. The fairways are now just blue clay silt, and hard as concrete. You LITERALLY cannot take even a slight divot to get under the ball, as your clubhead will practically stop. Unless you can pick the ball clean every time, you will find yourself topping or squibbing the ball. They need to close down for repairs. You've been warned.
Please close the back 9
The back 9 is unplayable. The course owner needs to completely shut it down and actually put some money into the place so the fairways can recover from whatever happened at this course. Fairways were cracked ground, no grass whatsoever. Would not play this course with any clubs worth anything as I was personally worried about breaking mine. Ground was cement, place is horrible. It is criminal they are charging people to play this course as it is right now. Close it down and repair it!!!
The course was pretty much unplayable. The tee boxes were dirt. The fairways are mud and without any grass. I can’t believe we paid anything to play this course.
Several holes were unplayable.
The majority of the back 9 (10-18) were pretty much unplayable holes. Fairways consisted of dust, rock and dirt. One of the par 3’s “greens” consisted of a marked hole in the fairway; it was obvious they moved the hole back from the original green. I’m not sure what’s happening with this place but it is unfortunately an unplayable course for even the most amateur golfers. The owners need to understand the course needs to be shut down immediately and repaired appropriately to even charge people money to play there.
Never Again
Every year, I seem tempted to play a round here because of the unbelievable deal. Every year I leave thinking, "Never Again". The only thing worse than the course is the pace of play. Always takes 5.5 hours for 18 holes and never a ranger around to keep pace of play at an adequate rate. NEVER AGAIN!
.Course was closed
Paid with reservation. But the course was closed when I got there.
