Disappointing
Course is attractive and in good condition. However, $80 (including tax) is an absurd price for a public golf course in Victoria, over 20 miles from Minneapolis. There is NO SENIOR RATE, and the woman checking you in is not at all welcoming. There are many other courses in just as good shape with better prices and service. I will NOT be going back to Deer Run, and several of the people I played with today feel the same way.
A Nice Surprise
Deer Run Golf Club isn't a course that I had on my radar, and I mainly chose to play here because of convenience. I am really glad I picked this course. What I found was a quirky, but really fun, layout with excellent condition.
The first thing you'll notice driving into Deer Run is that this course is in a neighborhood. But the nice thing is, while there are many houses on the course, you never feel like they intrude on play. This is something most neighborhood golf communities get wrong but Deer Run gets right.
The conditions of Deer Run are really good. The fairways are firm and fast, the rough is not overly penal, and the greens are a nice speed and roll very true.
The layout really makes you think. I was fortunate to play with a regular who was able to advise me on the proper play for the different holes. You can hit driver on most every hole, but it is not always the prudent play. I found several times that laying up made for an easier second shot with a flatter lie.
My one complaint is that the course almost seems to run itself. There is very little on course staff to get you started or help players on the course. The local that I played with said that the staff seems to be about half the size of what it used to be.
One final comment is that I love the pace of play. On their website Deer Run advertises a guaranteed 4 hour round. We finished in just under 4 hours and never waited once. I wish more courses would follow this philosophy.
I highly recommend adding Deer Run to your Twin Cities golf itinerary. I think you'll really enjoy your round, and might enjoy sitting on the patio after the round with your buddies..
Love this club
I have to admit that I play here all the time, and really enjoy it. While the layout is nice but not amazing, the customer service and attitude is world class. Very friendly from everyone I encounter. Course is always in really great condition. Greens are excellent.
Always feels like home, great experience
I have played this course many times, and always find it enjoyable. Fairways in good shape and greens are great. It is a good layout, and I enjoy the fast pace of play. Despite the Covid19 crap, they make an effort to allow the golfer to feel like things are somewhat normal. Like other courses, services are a little limited, but friendliness of the staff is not!
I was told it was great, and they were correct
Deer Run is a course that I have heard a lot about. Many positives and very few negatives. I had heard about the clubhouse, the food, and the range. I had the opportunity to play the course and I wanted to check on the validity of the claims (all very good.) We arrived and I was a tad surprised at the size of the clubhouse, it was much smaller than you typically see them. It was quaint, and a neat looking building. We parked, and immediately were greeted by a very nice employee of the course. We got everything ready and made our way to the carts. The carts were extremely nice, GPS unit inside of it, embroidered seats that were super comfortable, USB ports, rain cover. My favorite cart I have been in to date. The range is awesome, you are on mats but there is a system that tees the ball up for you. You can choose the height of the tee and it keeps feeding you ammo. Very cool and the only range I have been on that has that. Clubhouse was awesome, smaller pro shop but a good selection for the size, locker room was kept up and it had a country club feel. The bar area was very cool, you will have to see it to completely understand, there is also patio seating inside screens, which we appreciated. We hit the course and we all loved it, This is a pretty challenging course in my opinion, very few "straight forward" holes, tactics come into play here. There are also a few holes where you can pull the trigger and really let the driver go. Greens were solid, very respectable for "Early season" in MN. You can get in trouble quickly with the trees if you are not careful, they will cut your angle off quick and you are laying up no matter what. Some very memorable holes on this course, and some you can surely score on. This course is on my top shelf of MN courses, easily. Try it, enjoy, you will have a great time. Cant wait to come back.
Suburban Development Course
The first impression I formed of Deer Run Golf Club as I drove into the parking lot was one of quality. This impression was reinforced when I sat in the contoured seat of the golf cart, one of the most comfortable I've experienced, and further reinforced when I visited the practice range. They have an automated system that tees up your range balls on a rubber tee, so you never have to bend down to grab a ball and tee it up. Hit your ball from the tee or from the mat and the system replaces the ball on the tee automatically. The tee height is fully adjustable for your deep face driver or slim profile hybrid. Once warmed up, the fun really began. Looking down the first fairway, my attention was drawn to the houses that lined the left side of the fairway. I don't generally like courses that are built into housing developments, but in this case the houses are set back far enough from the fairways that they didn't really distract me much and they don't constitute much of an OB hazard. Our foursome of 15+ handicap golfers didn't hit a single ball OB (although we did hit a few provisional balls). The fairways are generously wide, gently rolling, and well-kept. There are both right and left doglegs, elevated tee shots, approach shots to elevated greens, and a few blind shots. Plenty of variety to hold your interest through 18 holes. The greens are relatively large, smooth and moderately fast, with some surprisingly subtle breaks. There isn't a lot of water on the course, but two holes, numbers 9 and 13, require a forced carry over water to the green. With a decent drive neither approach shot should be very long, but the water does tend to get in a golfer's head. Deer Run is a fairly short course, only 6,338 yards from the back tees. But the variety of holes, the opportunity to use every club in the bag, and the overall quality of the course make it a truly enjoyable experience.
Great Greens
Played this course on 9-23-2014 and it was in great shape! Usually the courses in this area are starting to aerate the greens but they didn't yet so the greens were great. Fairways and rough were plush. Clubhouse is great too. If you get a chance, go play this course!

Nice looking course. I played with my wife. My wife really like this one. Little bit short but cute layout.
Best Public Greens in Metro Area
I play over 100 rounds a year at more than 30 different courses around Minnesota and Deer Run is my favorite overall golf experience.
Why?
- Fast pace of play (99% of the time under 4 hours)
- Best greens of any public course I play
- Super friendly staff
- GREAT food
- Challenging but fair layout
- Great variety of holes
Great Course.
Course was beautiful and well maintained. The staff was great and both sides had it's own drink cart. The fairways were wonderful and the greens were smooth and fast. They had gps on the carts and those cool captains chairs that were very comfortable. I usually play a different course every weekend with the same group of guys and this is the first time we said "We HAVE to play this course again this year". With all the options in southern MN, we never do that. This isn't Agusta but for the golfer with limited resources, this was awesome. A+++++
This is one of my favorite courses
Deer Run has quickly become one of my favorite courses. Convenient drive, fast play, friendly, courteous staff and a very well maintained course make Deer Run a pleasure to play. While not a difficult course with blind shots, it is still very challenging for my handicap level. I love playing here because when I play it's very fast and I usually get a rate that's great!! This course is in prime summer condition right now!!!
great golf
Beautiful coarse well maintained friendly staff lots of fun
It is so beautiful a Golf Course
It is a nice GC. But there is not sufficient direction sign. So I had hard time finding next hole tee box.
not orgenized tee times way on top of each other
course didn't tell us that we are going to be caught in the middle of a 60 people group from k fan I think also greens are very shaggy such a slow round
fun to play but a bit expensive
i like this course, it has some great holes and beautiful land. trees, hills, water and nice views.
Course is in great shape
Great course, in terrific shape. Decent elevation changes, not extremely long, but a very nice public course.
Walkers slow the pace of play
Everything about the course was great. The only proble was we were stuck behind a walking twosome and they kept the pace on the front nine, but on the back nine they were slow and did not let us through (we had a cart), even though there was at least a hole and a half open in front of them.
I was just looking at the this golf course on my Golf GPS app (looked nice) and went to their website. When I saw the golf course was only 6200 yards from the back tees, that shocked me. Then I saw their pricing and that REALLY shocked me... I won't bother driving that far when there are 200+ better choices nearer to me...
