Amazing Green Complexes
This course is all about the green complexes. Great conditioning throughout. Every green was a bit different but most were elevated on a pedestal with 10ft + of drop-off on some sides. A lot of template holes including a punchbowl, reverse redan, edan, horseshoe, biarritz and many others.
The only negative I would say about the course is 90% of the holes are straight away so it was driver straight all day.
Wet conditions
I had the opportunity to again play the Banks course on an uncrowded golf course. It was wet from recent rains but firm enough for golf carts. Two of us played in a shade over two hours and a single member behind us said he didn't want to play through because he was having a hard time keeping up with us. It's private but if you get an invite it is worth accepting. I liked the course but would not put it up on top ten or twenty of a list or New Jersey courses. It's much above average however.
Challenging Greens
Great Course, magnificently well maintained. Staff is very helpful, courteous. Not difficult from the tee boxes, but the greens are this tracks defense. Greens are fast and treacherous. A real test. Loved it.
One of New Jerseys Best
Any discussion about the best courses in New Jersey, must include "The Banks" course. Every hole is exciting in one way or another, especially the green complexes.
Course conditions were excellent and the greens were quick. And tell me a course in NJ that has 4 better par 3's
One of my faves
Full disclosure...I am a biased member, but the Banks course at Forsgate is one of my favorite tracks. The Banks boasts some of the most interesting and challenging green complexes you'll ever encounter and four of the best par 3's you'll find in the Northeast (each featuring a different classic design...Eden, Reverse Redan, Short, & Biarritz). Course conditions are always fantastic (even in Feb) and pace of play is always brisk. One of my favorite courses!
Banks Course
I played the Banks Course. It is old school with tees and greens close together but unique in some places. I wasn't wowed by the course but I can't say I didn't like it and given an opportunity I would play it again.
Forsgate Overrated
This course gets a lot of attention here in Central Jersey and I'm not sure why. I found it to be in great shape and very well taken care of. From tee to fairway is fine. It's when you get on or near the greens is when the clowns and the windmills come out.Huge undulating greens(rolled very true BTW and in great shape). Miss a green and you could be in a bunker 40' deep. Hit it on the wrong side of the flag could put you 40' feet away from the whole or in one of those monstrous bunkers. I hit what I thought was a perfect 6 on a par 3. Ball rolled off the green and down an embankment. The guest fee is over $100 and I don't see what the big deal is with this course. Totally overrated.
The only thing clear about this post is that JackStraw6 has no clue about golf architecture or it’s history. That’s ok! Not every course needs to be straight away and a rather unprotected green.
Challenging course, especially the long par 3's! Good Country Club atmosphere without the snootiness - staff & members are very friendly. Regarding guest fee - I always look at price vs. value received.
