25 best golf vacations for couples

Couples can do it all - hiking, wine, golf, spa - at these grand destinations.
Princeville Makai Golf Club
Kauai's Princeville Makai is wonderfully routed on the north shore with visits to the ocean on both nines.

The couple that plays together stays together. If you're a golfer with a spouse who loves the game as well, consider yourself extra lucky in love.

Golf plays a large part at many of the best resorts for couples in the world. What's a better way to reconnect together than a morning or evening on the grounds in solitude?

For Valentine's Day, here are 25 couples golf vacation options. We've partnered with some of these destinations to offer exclusive golf packages. This year, instead of jewelry, surprise your loved one with a confirmation number to one of these fantastic locales. Some are once-in-a-lifetime splurges, others are a little more reasonable. They're all going to 'wow' your partner's golf shoes off.

  1. For the honeymooning couple: Kauai

Where do we begin in Hawaii? Frankly it warrants its own article. Each island has scores of worthy resorts aimed at Honeymooners or simply those who crave respite from the trials of the busy mainland.

It doesn't get much more romantic than Kauai's North Shore and the Princeville Resort Kauai (formerl the St. Regis). A sublime, small beach, pool area and casual (but fine) dining will allow you to recharge together.

In Maui, the Kapalua Ritz and Montage features a spectacular and rugged north shore location (the couple that surfs together, stays together?)

For golf, Princeville Makai Golf Club has one of the best combinations of playability for all levels and clifftop scenery. In fact, you can also take a sunset golf cart ride in this golf package. Those couples not up for a full 18 holes can also have a casual round on the Woods nine.

    Best of Kauai Package

    FROM $687 (USD)
KAUAI | Enjoy 4 nights' accommodations at Timbers Kauai Ocean Club & Residences and 2 rounds of golf at Princeville Makai Golf Club (GOLF Advisor's #1 ranked course in Kauai) and The Ocean Course at Hokuala.

  2. For the hiking couple: Sedona

Moments of grandeur and wonderment replay on a daily loop for guests at Enchantment Resort, a luxurious vacation getaway two hours from Phoenix in the cooler elevations of northern Arizona. It doesn’t matter where you are – playing golf at nearby Seven Canyons, lounging on the patio of the View 180 restaurant, hiking the rugged trails or even lying on a treatment table inside the Mii amo spa – the red rocks of Sedona and the beauty of the Coconino National Forest provide the eye candy.

For more value, head to the public courses like Oak Creek or Sedona Golf Resort. They are almost as scenic but more affordable. Hiking will get you even closer to these magical rock formations, just pack properly and know your limits.

    Sedona Golf Around Package

    FROM $287 (USD)
SEDONA | Enjoy 3 nights' accommodations at Hilton Sedona Resort at Bell Rock and 2 rounds of golf at Oakcreek Country Club & Sedona Golf Resort.

  3. For the laid-back Lowcountry couple: Sea Island

    New Sea Island cottages
Six new cottages at Sea Island sit steps from the Driftwood putting green.

There’s a reason nearly two dozen PGA Tour pros call St. Simons Island home. This barrier island offers Lowcountry luxury – essentially a laid-back lifestyle with all the fixings.

The 54-hole resort, the only property in the world to earn four Forbes five stars 11 years running, has just undergone extensive updates, adding the King Cottage (perfect for families) with its own private hitting bay, the newly redesigned Plantation course by Davis Love III, a new putting green for impromptu matches, an improved golf academy and the six-lane Sea Strike & Pub bowling alley.

The scenic Seaside course hosts the RSM Classic every fall. When you’re not bowling or playing golf, it’s off to the beach, tennis center, yacht club, spa or shooting school.

  4. For the winos: Napa and Silverado Resort

No couple - no matter their interests - can go wrong by selecting California’s wine country as the getaway. You don’t need Johnny Miller’s swing to enjoy the golf at Silverado, the 36-hole resort where he is part owner. Silverado hosts the Safeway Open every fall, but it’s player friendly for all skills.

Winos and foodies will love everything about the region … wine tastings all afternoon followed by a decadent meal. The French Laundry by Thomas Keller is the very definition of bucket-list dining. Phil Mickelson probably plays the Safeway every year just for his Tuesday night, pre-tournament, invite-only meal at Keller's legendary restaurant in Yountville.

  5. For the Scottish trip couple: Gleneagles-St. Andrews

    Gleneagles Resort - Queen's Course - hole 13
The 13th hole on the Queen's Course at Gleneagles Resort is a short but delicate 140-yard par 3.

Scotland is a great place for couples, whether you go with a smaller bed & breakfast or country house, or splurge on a five-star castle or estate stay.

A no-brainer itinerary is to combine the heathland beauty of Auchterarder and sublime luxury of Gleneagles and nearby St. Andrews. Gleneagles features fine dining, spa and serenity at every turn. It's golf onsite is quite good for all too, especially the King's and Queen's courses, as well as a casual pitch 'n putt on the grounds.

There's little need to leave the property over a long weekend, but if you're going to be here awhile, you're just about an hour's drive away from St. Andrews, where you can play true links golf and explore the ancient golf town, and if you want, splurge on more drinkings and dinner at the Old Course Hotel.

  6. For natural splendor: Edgewood Tahoe

    AwardWinning Edgewood Tahoe.jpg
    The Lodge at Edgewood

Edgewood Tahoe delivers Lake Tahoe in the best of ways. The course, home to the American Century Championship every summer, has four holes along the shore, bringing the lapping waves into play. The 154-room, LEED-certified lodge debuted in June 2017 with an expansive events lawn leading to a small beach.

The surrounding South Lake Tahoe community is a unique place. You can catch a concert or comedian at the casinos, or if neon lights aren’t your thing, recharge with an outdoor adventure. Life centers around the lake, whether it’s kayaking and boating on it, swimming in it, hiking around it or taking the ski lift at Heavenly to capture the most inspiring vistas of its emerald-blue waters.

  7. For the golf & tennis couple: La Quinta Resort & the Coachella Valley

I have friends who got engaged at La Quinta Resort. Make sense to me. Rather than a handful of huge pools, there are dozens of smaller ones littered throughout the smattering of casitas. You can get lost in the narrow, Spanish-inspired alleyways connecting guests to spas, tennis and excellent dining.

  8. For the off-road couple: Fairmont Chateau Whistler

Fairmont Chateau Whistler Golf Club - hole 8
The eighth hole, featuring stone beside the green as well as water, is one of Fairmont Chateau Whistler Golf Club's most dramatic.

This west-coast trip is for those couples out there who love their polos as much as their Lycra. Enjoy beautiful scenery at courses like Fairmont Chateau Whistler and then take on hiking, mountain biking, gondola rides and more. Whistler has incredible natural beauty and golf is just one way of immersing yourself in it. Just don't feed the bears.

  9. For the Lowcountry classy couple: Kiawah Island

Kiawah Island Golf Resort - Sanctuary hotel
The Sanctuary at Kiawah Island Golf Resort is a 255-room luxury hotel built in 2004.

Charleston, S.C. is one of the classiest historic cities in the U.S., and the charm continues just down the road on Kiawah Island. The Sanctuary Hotel is the type of stately hotel where you'll want to dress up to the nines. Jasmine's Porch serves delightful lowcountry cuisine while you can also go big at The Ocean Room.

Cougar Point and Oak Point are the two most playable layouts for all handicaps. Whether or not you decide to take on the Ocean Course, dinner in the Atlantic Room or drinks on the veranda overlooking the 18th and beach are soul-stirring.

  10. For the bucket-list couple: Pebble Beach

Pebble Beach Resorts isn’t just golf, you know. Beyond the famous fairways of Pebble Beach and Spyglass Hill, even non-golfers will love their stay. The dining is excellent; the spa sublime. Carmel-By-The-Sea and Cannery Row in Monterey offer shopping, more restaurants and long walks on the beach.

The 17-mile Drive and Highway 1 south to Big Sur are two of the best drives in America for scenery. Get up early to hike in Point Lobos State Reserve before the parking spots run out. My wife and I saw a whale come up for air while we were on the trails, a moment that took our breath away. - JSD

  11. For the road-tripping, lobster-eating couple: Cape Breton & Prince Edward Island

    Skyline trail image.jpg
The Cabot Trail around Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia is a gorgeous road that connects golfers with acclaimed courses.

If your relationship is going strong enough that you still enjoy long periods of time in the car together, that alone is worth celebrating.

And if so, there isn't a better place to cruise in the summertime than Canada's Maritimes. Prince Edward Island and Cape Breton are two excellent albeit very different islands. Do the rugged Cape Breton in Nova Scotia for the spectacular Cabot Cliffs and Cabot Links and the world-class drive to Ingonish, The Cabot Trail, where Highlands Links awaits and the Keltic Lodge.

PEI, meanwhile, is small, gently rolling and a literal storybook destination as the setting for Anne of Green Gables. The golf is also a little more affordable and playable for all levels. Enjoy friendly fairways by day and lobster suppers and the pleasant small-town feel of Charlottetown by night.

  12. For the paranormal couple: Savannah

Separated from South Carolina by the Savannah River, this charming coastal city sports a great vibe and good value for golf. You can tour the historic district by trolley or walk the cobblestones of River Street to explore historic buildings, shops and restaurants along the water. Forsyth Park has been a popular green space for a century and a half. Savannah Riverboat Cruises will get you out on the water.

The Westin Savannah Harbor Golf Resort & Spa overlooks the river, as does its Bob Cupp course. This Lowcountry favorite soaks up views of the Intracoastal Waterway and the river. After golf, head back downtown to drink from the taps of four local breweries or the Ghost Coast Distillery, which dates back pre-Prohibition. After dark, only the brave sign up for ghost tours of America's most haunted city.

Savannah Harbor Stay & Play Golf Package

    FROM $227 (USD)
SAVANNAH, GA | Enjoy 2 nights' accommodations at The Westin Savannah Harbor Golf Resort & Spa and 2 rounds of golf at The Club at Savannah Harbor.

  13. For the leaf-peeping couple: Asheville

Because of its unique location at high elevation, Asheville’s golf courses stay open year-round in a mostly mild climate. Southerners retreat to the Blue Ridge Mountains to escape the summer swelter. Fall – especially as the colors are changing – is arguably the best time of year. The families are back to school and the scenery even more spectacular.

The jewel of the region has long been the Omni Grove Park Inn and its Donald Ross course. Other golf resorts, including Rumbling Bald, Etowah Valley and Maggie Valley, all feature courses dating to the 1960s with green fees ranging between $40-$80. Touring America’s Largest Home – the 250-room Biltmore Estate – will give you house envy. The bohemian downtown is an eclectic mix of restaurants, shops and art galleries. Outdoor activities in the surrounding mountains range from hiking to ziplining.

    Experience Maggie Valley Package

    FROM $227 (USD)
ASHEVILLE, NC | Enjoy 2 nights' accommodations and 1 round of golf at Maggie Valley Club & Resort.

  14. For the SoCal cool couple: San Diego

Fabulous SoCal resorts can be found from the island of Coronado near downtown to up in Carlsbad and La Jolla. The famous beachfront Coronado Hotel can be paired with easy, breezy and affordable golf at Coronado. Or, the Lodge at Torrey Pines features some of the best views overlooking the South Course at Torrey Pines (a better couples option would be the easier but similarly scenic North Course) . For a more inclusive golf resort experience, take it five star all the way with the Fairmont Grand Del Mar. They'll pamper you on property, or escort you to the nearby Del Mar beach and pack a picnic for you.

  15. For the glamorous couple: Palmilla and Cabo

There are so many great resorts for couples in Cabo at the tip of Mexico's Baja Peninsula where the Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean collide. The weather's great year round, and there's plenty of activities on land (art galleries and dining in San Jose del Cabo) or water (deep-sea fishing, boating, etc.).

Palmilla might be the best for golfers. The intimate One&Only is right across the street from 27 holes of Jack Nicklaus golf kept in tiptop shape by Troon Golf. The boutique hotel delivers premier service and a romantic vibe. A historic wedding chapel is one of the most popular spots in Cabo to get married. The resort’s private yacht can take couples whale-watching or for a picnic with champagne on ice. A kayaking experience to Lover’s Beach could take your relationship next level.

  16. For the eco-Caribbean couple: Mayakoba

    Fairmont Mayakoba Resort - canals
Fairmont Mayakoba Resort winds through a collection of canals just off the Gulf of Mexico.

Drive past the myriad all-inclusive resorts in Cancun and you'll eventually come to the remarkable Mayakoba development. You've seen the golf course, El Camaleon, on TV for the PGA Tour event, but it's the four resort properties that are truly remarkable. Each were built delicately within a mangrove forest and around rivers. Guests can ride bikes or be shuttled between spas, dining concepts and ultimately out to the coast, where some of the area's finest beaches await. Rosewood and Fairmont anchor the premium brands, while the more playful Andaz brand delivers colorful value. Each offers an experience among the most unique resort stays in the Caribbean.

  17. For the mountain-mad couple: Fairmont Banff Springs

Morning train along the Bow River at Morants Curve / Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada
The expansion of the railways into Canada's west led to the creation of some of North America's most spectacular golf courses.

I’m not sure what’s more compelling to look at - the historic Fairmont Banff Springs, the “Castle in the Rockies” outside of Calgary, or the surrounding mountain peaks? Summer in the Canadian Rockies is oh so short, but oh so sweet. The village springs to life with shopping and dining.

The resort’s Banff Springs golf course, a Stanley Thompson marvel, might be the best resort course in the country not on an ocean. Even the extra Tunnel nine is a sweet escape. To best enjoy the beauty of Mother Nature, take the Banff Gondola to the top of Sulphur Mountain or a day trip an hour away to Lake Louise in Banff National Park. For a splurge, take the Rocky Mountaineer, a soul-stirring luxury train ride between Banff and Vancouver, for two days of jaw-dropping sights in western Canada.

  18. For the history-buff couple: Colonial Williamsburg

This destination might be known as a family getaway – with Busch Gardens Williamsburg, Water Country USA and an 18th century village that recreates the past as a learning experience for all ages – but it’s great for golf couples, too.

You’ve got choices: The 36-hole Kingsmill Resort, home to the LPGA Tour’s Pure Silk Championship on the scenic River course, or the five hotels, lodges and inns of Colonial Williamsburg Resorts, where the Gold and Green courses at Golden Horseshoe Golf Club (plus the Spotswood executive nine) reside.

Maybe the Williamsburg Tasting Trail will be of interest. Or go back in time once again by touring Jamestown or the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown.

  19. For the lake-life couple: Reynolds Lake Oconee

    Reynolds Plantation - kayaking
Kayaking can be breathtaking on Lake Oconee, the second largest lake in Georgia.

Picture paddleboarding, canoeing or waterbiking on peaceful, inland Georgia waters. That's the life at Reynolds, which is a huge golf community but anchored by a Ritz-Carlton hotel and five courses. A visit here is bound to be active with so much to do on dry land and off. The Ritz amenities are as comfortable as it gets, and the dining options are abundant.

  20. For the Caribbean couple: Dominican Republic

The best country in the Caribbean for golf is without question the Domican Republic thanks to the one-two punch of Punta Cana and Casa De Campo.

Casa de Campo is a true ultimate in Caribbean couples golf travel. The Altos de Chavon features outdoor concerts as well as fine Italian dining with spectacular views. Teeth of the Dog is Pete Dye's best work and better yet for couples is not as intimidating as his later designs. All handicaps and abilities can enjoy it from every tee. A new beach club and dining concepts keep the relaxation going long after golf. You can choose from all-inclusive or a la carte golf packages.

  21. For the desert glam couple: Scottsdale

Scottsdale will equally satisfy the lady and the man on a couples trip. There is exceptional spas and shopping, not to mention world-class desert golf and dining. If you've never been to the Sonoran Desert, point your compass to North Scottsdale where the scenery is incredible thanks to landmarks like Pinnacle Peak. Boulders Resort may be the most marvelous place of them all, with remarkable boulder piles scattered throughout the Waldorf Astoria-brand hideaway.

    Best of The Boulders Package

    FROM $277 (USD)
PHOENIX/SCOTTSDALE | Enjoy 3 nights' accommodations at The Boulders Resort & Spa and 3 rounds of golf at Troon North Golf Club Pinnacle Course and The Boulders Golf Club

  22. For the summer spa couple: Kohler

In terms of Midwestern golf resort luxury, Wisconsin's Kohler easily separates from the pack. It's not only a major championship and Ryder Cup venue with four excellent Pete Dye-designed courses, but the American Club lodging, dining and spa is all world-class as well. Be warned, you may be tempted to remodel your house after sampling the latest Kohler-brand fixtures.

  23. For the couple craving new wines: Chateau Elan

East coasters don’t have to travel all the way to Napa to enjoy a good glass of wine after golf. Get your fill of both at Chateau Elan outside of Atlanta. Three courses, including the Chateau and the Woodlands courses and a par 3 "Executive Course", are available for public play.

New ownership in 2018 has spent millions in recent years upgrading the courses, golf villas and the winery on property. Since joining Chateau Elan in 2013, winemaker Simoe Bergese's wines have won more than 150 awards in competition. Production has increased to more than 35,000 cases a year as the wines have become more popular, more than five times the output in 2012. More to sample, more to drink.

Château Élan Stay & Play Golf Package

    FROM $267 (USD)
BRASELTON, GA | Enjoy 3 nights' accommodations at Château Élan Winery & Resort (Inn at Château or Villas at Château) and 3 rounds of golf at Château Élan Golf Club - Château, Woodlands, & Executive Courses.

Golf Advisor Round Trip: The Bahamas

When it comes to bragging rights, few destinations make your friends jealous like a getaway to the Bahamas. Perhaps the best way to help the islands recover from last year’s Hurricane Dorian would be visiting to pump some needed dollars into the economy.

Three of the island’s best golf resorts really weren’t affected anyway – Sandals Emerald Bay on Great Exuma, Baha Mar on Nassau and Atlantis, home to an LPGA Tour event at The Ocean Club on Paradise Island. The Sandals might be the hardest to get to, but the rewards are a stunning beach, a scenic (albeit tough) Greg Norman course and an elegant resort. Baha Mar is the newest, opening its Royal Blue course in 2017. Snapping Instagram photos of that clear blue water wins the internet every time.

    • For the epic islander couple: Maui

It's as if Maui was built by Mother Nature for couples vacations. A small island but full of sights and activities from sunrise volcano tours to the road to Hana. From zip lining to whale watching to simply relaxing on some of the world's greatest beaches.

What part of Maui is right for you? On the south side, the Fairmont Wailea has a stunning, calm beach minutes from what may be the best couples resort course on earth, the Emerald. Head north to the dramatic Plantation course where the pros play and the Ritz-Carlton at Kapalua. Or, the Sheraton Ka'anapali is a little more affordable and has a great buzz if you like more activity. Or, you can go even more exclusive and take the ferry to Lanai, where a Four Seasons resort awaits as well as arguably Hawaii's best golf course, Manele.

      Maui Golf Around Package

      FROM $557 (USD)
MAUI | Enjoy 4 nights' accommodations at Napili Kai Beach Resort and 3 rounds of golf at Kapalua Resort Plantation Course, Kapalua Resort Bay Course & King Kamehameha Golf Club.
