Sweetbriar Golf Club - Legacy 18

About
Located in Avon Lake, Sweetbriar Golf Club boasts two scenic 18-hole courses that are routed through natural wetlands and forests. The front nine of the Legacy Course was built in 2002 and the back nine was added in 2007. The nines have different landscapes, creating a diverse set of holes that will have you using all the clubs in your bag. The front nine has a links design with winding fairways and large greens while the back nine was carved from forests. With natural wetland areas and a number of interesting risk-reward par 5s, the back of the golf course has more of an east coast feel. The other 18-hole course at Sweetbriar was built in the 60s. It is shorter than the Legacy but is still challenging, which makes it great for beginners.

It was good
Played yesterday course was in good shape greens were nice and most bunkers were raked. They have had to cut down several trees due to last years storms but makes it more playable. Course was cart path only so pretty slow going but course is still wet from winter which is to be expected/ Driving range was open and packed with golfers great to see
Leav-ing Frustrated
Worked in the golf maintenence industry ( private & public) for 15 years. Never have I seen a course in worst condition for leaves. If they took bags of leaves and dumped them on the tees, fairways and greens there would be less. A once over would have help emencely. Granted the winds were quite strong there was no attempt to blow in any way shape or form the leaves whatsoever. I told the employee how I felt and he said " that's why we charge winter rates." I don't believe in my opinion that $40 for winter rates is that cheap that a round with leaves everywhere that it shouldn't be an issue. Ill never play this course in the "winter rate" months ever again
Great course
This is a fantastic course that keeps you on your toes. Great layout and well kept course to play.
Pace of Play
The pace of play was absolutely ridiculous. I had to wait 10-15 minutes on every tee box.
Bring the hole bag
The course allows you to use the whole bag versus a number of clubs that most course do. We will be back.
Absolute rip off, asinine rangers, bad conditions, packed course
This used to be a decent local muni that has turned into one big below average money grab. $80 for 18 on a weekend morning, $40 for 9 holes ((I can pay $42-48 depending on the day and play big met or sleepy hollow for 18 holes with the metroparks pass, and those courses are in twice as good of shape as legacy and not as packed).
Not only are the prices a rip off, but the rangers and starters are buffoons. They spread the tee times out by 10 minutes and seemingly let more out, and the course gets jammed, and then the starter has the cojones to tell you to have your breakfast ball in your pocket and the ranger will come up to you and tell you to speed it up when there are clearly groups ahead of us making us wait. Terrible course management, multiple bad spots on greens, I had a birdie putt (I know I’m not good) and had to go through burnt up and bumpy greens twice (pic attached). Course amenities are decent, is a beautiful patio for a post round drink and meal but about 70% of the time it’s closed because they seemingly don’t wanna pay people to keep it open. Prices at the turn are a joke, think it was $8 for 2 gatorades one time? You can imagine what alcohol is priced at. Range mats are loose, felt like I was hitting on top of a moving train. Place is just one big disappointing money grab now, and unless the conditions of the course are much improved next year after charging this much extra for an average course this year, I will most likely never go out of my way to look for a tee time there.
Disappointed
I’ll start by saying I’ve played at this course over the last 6 years. Paying $8 for two bottles of Pepsi should be illegal. The course looks terrible with all the construction going on. It would be nice to sweetbriar to get the same attention legacy does. Lastly, the day we played there was no reason for cart path only. The golf cart would shut off if you were a foot off the path, leaving us sitting with no other option but reverse.
Expensive course for what you get
Greens are in bad shape and pace of play is not good, would expect better for $40/$80 for 9/18
A few greens need work
Interesting course with a variety of holes. Overall, course was in very good shape. A few greens need some work. There were a 2 greens where we treated the conditions as ground under repair and took relief. Staff was friendly and pace of play was good (4 hours, 15 minutes). $67 was a bit high for a 2:45 PM round.
We apologize for the condition of the greens and the pace of play during your visit, and we appreciate your feedback as it helps us improve. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience.
