Golf Advisor: Top Courses in New York (2016 #18)
Reviews
Big G has sadly closed
Sad that almost all of these catskill resorts have closed. When we used to play you could see the abandoned hotel and pol house. Course played over a hilly site and incorporated the lake on several risk reward holes. One of my favorite courses in New York.
Vista or Little G course has Closed
The Vista or little G course has now closed. Course had a great layout playing over the rolling terrain. I took many photos of this course and need to dig them up. One of the holes has a tee shot where you hit over the road.
Very sad that most of these catskill resorts have closed.
Heaven on earth
Absolutely fantastic!!!! You must try!!!!
Oldie but a goldie
The greens are quick and in great condition with pronounced slants, a good challenge. Fairways and tee boxes are in great shape. The sand bunkers need some work on some holes on others they are good. Layout is definetly a plus. Starts out the way a golf course should a moderate straight away par 4. Second hole is a nice left to right downhill, third is a right to left across water allowing you to determine your risk/reward. This is the way the course is mixing holes up and allowing risk shots for easier approaches. There are almost no clubhouse amenities and the only thing interesting in the clubhouse are some of the historical photos. Watch the cart paths they will knock the fillings out of your teeth. I go the "the big G" a few times a year and always enjoy this great old course
Great course but a bumpy ride
The course was beautiful, scenic and in great shape. The staff was very friendly. The clubhouse and locker rooms were in very poor condition. The cart paths were terrible, bumpy and rattled the heck out of your clubs. The only poor conditions on the course were the traps which had very little sand and lots of rocks in them. If you can stay out of the traps and off the cart path this course was excellent and very enjoyable to play. My wife and I played in 3 hours with a 12:14 starting time. I would play it again for sure. It was worth the 1 hour drive.
Golf in the Catskills
with Kutchers and the Concord Closed. Grossingers is the only one left harking back to when the Catskills was the place to go. Great Layount and in Great Shape. The greens are faster than they look.
Beware using golf cart as the paths are shot. You will bounce around quite a bit.
Very little in the way of food and drink.
Whites are 6400 yards. Tips 7044.
great course BUT
this is a flat out great course. only 10th green was bad and they are repairing now. the cart paths are horrendous. if I'm going to pay premium prices, this should be fixed. there is nothing but golf here. snack stand gone. bathrooms old and musty. if they fix paths, this is best golf course around
Worth the ride
A fantastic golf course. Long for the average golfer.
6488 from the whites.
Trip back in Time
One of the classic courses of the Catskills. The buildings have fallen into a state of disrepair but this course still holds a lot of the original charm. The layout is great, plenty of chances to use your full power clubs and test your putting skills. Some of the greens have some patches under repair but hardly come into play. The one thing I cab advise you to do when playing here is to bring a copy of the receipt from golf now.
Poor attitude of staff
I was fortunate to get a HOT DEAL forv$20. Woman at the desk in the Pro Shop had an attitude about this making me feel like I was a 2nd class citizen. It was clear she was unhappy that I paid so little. I arrived about 30 minutes prior to my tee time. There was no one else waiting to tee off. I asked whether we could tee off early and was told we could not at the rate we paid but if I paid the higher rate than I could go out.early. I was told that there was no financial benefit to letting me go out early even though there was no one else around. My reply that the benefit was good will seemed to fall on deaf ears.
If Grossingers has a problem with a $20 rate then they should not offer it!
In addition
Facilities were TERRIBLE. Bathrooms were gross, dirty and in disrepair(like the rest of Grossingers)
I would not return nor would I recommend Grossingers.
Big G
This course has a beautiful layout. Holes are tough but fair. A golfer's course. You won't be disappointed.
A Ckassic
This is one of the best Golf courses in the New York area. It's challenging with a great layout. I look forward to making the trip to play this beauty at least once a year. It's worth the trip. The only problem is there are very limited amenities so bring your own food and drink.
what great views
fairways great greens fast but alot of brown stots
Grossingers
The drive in is a little scary with abandoned buildings of a once very beautiful resort. But once on the course you forget this and see a very beautiful course with a high degree of difficulty.
The tee and fairways were beautiful....greens had spots of trouble and cart paths need some repair.
But overall a very nice course that I plan on playing again.
Best course in the region
Outstanding layout, classic design. Each hole is unique and memorable. Course conditions were excellent. One tip: Stay off the cart paths!!
cours had some side hills but if you play a few times you would know where to hit
got there few min. early outside help was very friendly picked clubs up at car- but went inside guy behind counter was the most unfriendly person ever it was like i was bothering him by playing golf at his course, payed my 65 dollars went out and played perhaps the best golf course within 100 miles if they change inside help i would go back
Rundown like the hotel
The crumbling remains of a once thriving hotel has unfortunately crept it's way up to and swallowed one of the last remaining legendary Catskill golf courses.
Played a round August 2nd after being assured by the locals it was worth the 85.00 fee.
The skeleton crew of a staff on duty were nice enough, but the decor is dated. No after round libation spot by a long shot either. No on course personnel, beverage cart and no food. Cart paths are impassable unless you drive 2mph looks like it was carpet bombed. It's a shame they let this gem slip away. Take the 85.00 and play two other local courses.
great experience
very sad driving past the falling down buildings but when you get to the golf course it is amazing that it still exists.front nine is pretty nice and kind of difficult.the back nine witch they call the lakes and for a good reason, hole #13 goes around a huge lake and has a island green.if the lake is full there is an over flow that creates a beautiful water falls.you need your camera.will play it again when you can do 90 degrees
Except for the pro shop staff, the course is a beautiful jewel!
Clearly the course does not get the amount of play/business that any other of this caliber would or should get.
That fact is currently a major attractive feature, as you could be assured a great pace of play at a course with a great lay out with beautiful views in the Catskills. The course is a shotmakers dream.
That being said, when the office/pro-shop staff resents your business because you used GolfNow to set tee time, it makes you wonder.
When they explain to you that they make NO money on golfers who use that site, it makes you wonder why they joined. When they do not understand that if it were not for the site they may not have seen you that day, it confirms the strong possibility that perhaps the reason they are not busy is their obvious lack of customer service.
As beautiful the course is, I will not go there again because my group was not appreciated. We could definitely go to other nearby courses, for a lot less money and a lot friendlier welcome.
Awsome experience
One of the best courses in the North East. We've been taking the hour and a half drive for 10+ Years and enjoy the course more and more each time we visit.
The cart paths are beat up but who cares.
Fairways and greens were in perfect condition and each hole is distinctly different with majestic views.
I have no affiliation with the club other than paying greens fees.
The golf course doesn't get any money when you book a Hot Deal, all of the money goes to Golf Now. Golf Now works on a barter arrangement, the course gives them two tee times a day in exchange for Golf Now showing their available tee times on their site. It's understandable why a course wouldn't be happy to have Golf Now undersell them.
