Great vibes everywhere
Only about 30 minutes from Augusta National, this place is terrific in every way - mostly wide fairways and great green complexes.
I had tried to get here for the past decade while covering the Masters and finally was able to sneak over for a late afternoon round. I was glad that I did. The membership is great, the course is great and post-round drinks, looking out over the back porch topped it all off nicely.
Can't recommend this place enough. Get there if you can.
classic old school
My fifth round at this most enjoyable course. Brought a well traveled friend last year and we both thought that perhaps this is what Augusta National may have like when it was first open. Not long but all you can handle as reflected in the 138 slope. The whole vibe is a key part of the experience. Low key but elegant. If you go, do not miss the great memorabilia in the club house. Wonderful staff. The whole town of Aiken is wonderful with some fascinating history as it relates to golf and polo. Also home club of Kevin Kisner and Scott Brown with Kevin's house right off 17. Look forward to a couple of rounds during our Masters trip in two months.
Beautiful Old Course
I wish modern course architects would visit this course and take a few notes. While the layout is not overwhelming it is challenging and will test your shot shaping skills. If you've never played here before, make sure to hire one of their caddies, shot placement both off the tee and on the greens is critical. I have probably played at least 50 different courses in South Carolina is this is my favorite by far. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. The fairways were in good shape and the greens are some of the best I've ever putted on.
Can't Beat Palmetto Golf Club
I only get to play Palmetto once a year and it is never disappointing. The condition of the course is outstanding in every respect. Fast greens, wide open fairways and excellent fairways. Not much of a 19th hole, but the Pro Shop is great...well stocked and goof variety.
Dr. Alister MacKenzie's other north Georgia gem
Located about 30 minutes from Augusta National, there is a letter in the clubhouse from Bobby Jones asking the managers at Palmetto to limit play for National members because so many were bypassing the home of the Masters to play the Aiken, S.C., layout.
MacKenzie used land that is similar to Augusta National's, with his signature wide fairways and unique green complexes, and unlike Augusta National Palmetto has changed little over the years.
Palmetto is Augusta National without the green grass, and much easier to get a tee time.
