Don't Allow Tee Times During HS Play
Make sure to check during the weekdays if there is high school play because you will have to bounce around and play will be slow and inconsistent. Do not understand why they allow tee times if they know there is tournament play going on.
Not like it used to be
Played this course for the first time in well over a year. The course was not in as good shape as it has been in the past but apparently it's under new ownership and it seems that they're in the middle of altering things a bit (primarily removing trees and undergrowth) which will likely improve the overall play in many ways. Hopefully they follow through with the changes and tidy things up.
Greens were in pretty rough shape. Many of the aprons were burned up and essentially just dirt. Fairways and tees were average at best. To be fair, we are coming off a fairly long drought but the other courses I've played recently in the area have somehow managed maintain their facilities better.
The person working the pro shop, who was less than personable, did not let me know that the course layout/numbering had changed so I teed off from what used to be the first hole. It wasn't until I noticed the par for the third hole on the card was showing a 3 rather than a 4 that I realized something was off. Would have been nice if he had warned of the hole layout changes when I checked in.
Worst part of the round was the pace of play. Luckily I was a single playing in the afternoon and didn't hit the wall of players until the 15th hole. Playing 15-18 took nearly 2 hours. The person I joined up with, another single, was extremely unhappy and filled me in on what he experienced during his round. We also spoke with the golfers in front of us and they mentioned at one point they were playing behind a group of 8. I personally witnessed a group of 7 playing on the 3rd hole when I was coming off the 18th green. There's even more to tell but I won't bore you with the details.
Essentially, this course is in desperate need of a ranger/marshal, ESPECIALLY on a Saturday.
Final thought: I'll probably give this course another try in the coming spring and see how things have progressed.
Green grass! Worth the trip.
It had been a hot June without much rain! The link course played firm Greens rolled true. piece of play was excellent. Well worth the drive from northern Virginia. As the course is in good shape compared to some.
What a difference a day makes
On Saturday I was playing Locust Hill in West Virginia, and mentioned I was playing the Links Course at Shenandoah Valley the next day. Two of my playing partners said, that the Links Course was not in good shape and they would much rather play the other Shenandoah Valley course. I think they just don't understand/like links golf. The course was in great condition and was playing firm and fast (which is just how you want a links course). Fairways had contour to them so you definitely had to play to a point based on how your ball would roll once it landed.
Starter and clubhouse staff were great. I was looking for a logo ball but they were out. When I made the turn the starter mentioned that they had found them (I was on a four state/four day golf trip), so I was able to get one. The starter paired me up with three local regulars who were a lot of fun during the round. The course is pretty straightforward, but there were a couple of times the local knowledge helped keep me away from trouble.
The course was in great condition. Amazing what a little rain can do (and I got out of there 10 minutes ahead of a downpour).
Course Layout reset - All GPS app's Failed
It was my first time playing this course in at least six months or more. I was surprised to see the whole course layout changed. They had changed a couple of tee numbers last year but everything has changed now. We had three GPS apps in our group and none of them worked. I updated the Bushnell Phantom 2 rangefinder before I went out with the latest course information (update was available) but that was useless.
The Ranger stated that course the updates have been sent out but none of them have shown-up in the apps yet. I asked about distance markers on the course and he explained that the 200 and 150 yardages are stenciled on paved cart paths. Most of cart paths here are unpaved so we were guessing on our distance to the green most of time.
I wonder if it would not be helpful to post some painted markers at the cart path until the apps catch-up. A painted Stick or Rock at the cart path is not a big ask as most course have something posted somewhere anyway.
We also discovered wild / really tall grass areas in front of several Tee boxes. You must hit your drive over this to just make it to the front fairway. Our struggling golfers lost balls in this needless grass this year. Last year the grass there was just thick but you could pick-up your ball - now it's impossible.. I guess this feature and other newly grown wild grass areas add some character to the course but I think it will intimidate some golfers and they will never play there again.
The fairways and greens were in good shape. Of course the rough needed to be mowed so finding balls there was really iffy and time consuming. So much for keeping pace of play in mind. .
Our group is a mix of good and struggling golfers so we will rarely play this course in the future.
Nice early spring round! Will be back!
.Enjoyed a nice early spring round at the Links Course. Easy drive to the valley. Weather was good for early March, a little windy. Greens were excellent and challenging. Fairway were in good shape as well. Cart path only today, not a problem. Several temporary tee boxes as the new management are working on numerous improvements. New course mapping but figured it out with my Golfshot app. Look forward to returning in June! Got around very quickly with no delays.
Off-Season Round
I have played courses year-round, and my expectations for winter are different than if I was playing a course in-season, even with that, I wasn't super happy with the course.
Conditions of the course were better than I expected for late Feb. Fairways were nice condition, greens were excellent. They are doing a lot of work around the course, and clearly changed the order of the holes recently (as the Hole numbers were printed signs on the posts over the old numbers, and the course apps on my phone didn't know the change yet).
Some of the tee boxes where just spots in "rough", which is somewhat understandable in teh winter, but one box in particular on the front 9 was so uneven it was difficult to cleanly hit m driver. Also interesting, none of the par 3s (iron holes) were affected by this as they all used areas that are clearly teeing areas normally.
Fairways are narrow on many holes, which provides a nice challenge.
Club-house clearly is also being improved as there was some new construction in around the pro-shop.
I had heard this changed ownership recently, so I am not surprised.
Checking in, I thought the gentleman in the pro shop was a bit gruff, as he was the only person at the course I interacted with, is why I scored that as Fair.
Price was great, and I will try this course again in-season, at least once.
In Construction- new owner-
The course is under repair and construction. Trees being cut down workers everywhere. The pro shop is open to make Tee-times- that is about it. Everything else is closed and being renovated. The carts are Old and dingy - seats torn in mine. The tee boxes are all mostly closed so you play from rough or fairway spots. Fairways are improving and greens too. Should be major discount for playing in the mess - but it’s not. If you are ok with the mess , lack of clubhouse and noise everywhere- then you will be fine.
Getting reaquainted
I have to agree that finishing on what used to be 9 is a better finishing hole.
Great value
This used to be Bowling Green. Some changes and the front nine is now the back nine. The great breakfast sandwhiches are still there but they are $6 now not $3.50. Nice course in good shape even with all the heat.
Enjoyable round
Everything you would expect. Friendly staff. Improvements have been made to the clubhouse.
Expect the usual scuff marks and divots found on a public course.
Beautiful Sunday afternoon
Booked this course on Sunday afternoon. Weather was perfect and we got to play with Tyler and Kevin. Alway good to meet new people during golf.
The holes order changed since last year we played this course and I did not update my Garmin.
Nevertheless we had.a great time on a well maintained course.
Great improvements! Always a pleasure playing here
They made a lot of course changes this year! The course is a lot more playable and fun with the new hole structure, a little bit less trees in weird places, and reworked greens!
This is one of our go-to local courses. The staff is always been great, the courses will maintained, and overall a wonderful golf course ( especially for the $)
Only downside is there's limited food options and there isn't always a beer cart!
Great course
Have always liked this course. Really enjoying the changes becoming more open with less trees. Seeing the openness to other fairways makes it more picturesque. Thanks for all you do to improve the golfers experience.
A Great Course
Used to be called Bowling Green now called The Links. Still a great course and a great place to play. Great staff too! Love playing here.
Always a fun course to play.
Used to be called Bowling Green north. Now under new management. The GPS cars are gone and there is a slight change in the course hole numbers but otherwise same course. It was in great condition, greens ran true and fairways well taken care of us. Front desk and starter were very nice. Love playing here.
