Heidelberg : Hidden gem
The layout starts out slowly but builds and builds to a wonderful crescendo
Great green complexes and lots of variety
Would play again in a second
Thanks to the extremely friendly staff
It was a treat. Throughout the course, the greens were spectacular requiring a lot of thought and often precision of line and touch. The front 9 I found to be very severe, with lots of out of bounds and not much room to stray. I would be a little more prepared for that on a revisit, but if you're not pretty sharp out of the box, you are going to get punished. Things opened up a little bit on the back.
Many quite memorable holes, even having played it for the first time. The par 3s in particular were all terrific, and 18 has to be one of the better finishing holes around.
It was a great opportunity to be able to visit and play.
Fun Layout
This is my first time playing this course. It was in pretty good shape and just about every green was protected which placed a premium on ball placement off the tee.
The clubhouse needs some attention. It doesn't look any money was put into it since it was built in 1969.
Overall really good
Course was in great condition considering the lack of recent rains. The big surprise was the difficulty of the greens. When I checked in the guy in the pro shop advised me to keep it below the hole. That was an understatement. All four of us had several putts that rolled off the green even though we were very cautious. Would like to play it again now that I know a little of the severity. I can see where you could score pretty well there if you got to know the contours of the greens. First time?.....forget it.
Nothing wrong with fast greens but..
..when 1/3 of the greens are slopped back to front so that the tiniest tap produces a put off if you miss the cup, that gets real frustrating after awhile. Hole 10 needs some trees cut down so you have room to work the ball off the tee. Beautifully maintained course, nice facilities and practice amenities. Staff also ignores Governors orders of wearing face masks while inside (including those in the kitchen/bar area), so yeah, super considerate.
Great condition
course is immaculate. Greens were just rolled today and were probably 11 on the stint meter and were in great shape.
Fairways were very good and the rough was not overly difficult.
Wish I could play here everyday
tall rough grass
First time playing this course after buying a retirement house in Myrtle Beach. Lived all my life in Berks County and could never afford or be eligible to play this course (membership requirements). Truly the best conditioned course in county. A shame I'm moving away. Golfnow price to play was $30 and was worth it. Only complaint was lack of golf cart direction signs to next hole. Hard to know where to go. Also the rough grass was too long (hard to find ball) and a lot of leaves at this time of year. The greens are lightening fast. I thought Golden Oaks in Fleetwood was the best but this course puts them to shame. Wished I had a camera to take pics of the fantastic views.
