Underrated Track
Oconomowoc Golf Club does not get nearly as much hype as it should around the Milwaukee area. This Donald Ross gem is not overly long, but the greens are devilish and make scoring very difficult. I played in a state am qualifier there and I don't believe the winning score was under par despite playing less than 6400 yards. The course has holes that turn in both directions and demand true shot-making to have birdie chances. In my opinion, the course lacks a strong "signature hole" that some other courses are famous for, but more than makes up for it with a routing that doesn't have a truly bad hole on it. Really enjoyed my rounds there and hope to play it again in the future.
Donald Ross green's for the win.
Oconomowoc golf club was a treat to play, this was my 3rd Donald Ross course and let me tell you reading greens does not get any easier the more Ross courses you play. Private clubs continue to amaze me in how wonderful they make you feel and how well they do everything from the golf course to the pro shop to the bathrooms. Oconomowoc did this just the whole place is very well done.
The golf course was outstanding. The fairways were in immaculate condition. The first cut of rough was great. I love when courses do that and the rough was lush but not too penial. The greens were great, they held all the types of shots you needed and rolles true and fast. If you are able to hit the ball in the fairways you have a chance to play very well here, get off them just a bit and you are forced to hit punch shots under trees, and those do not hold greens. Fairways greens and 2 putts were my goal...that did not happen but oh well it was a great place to play.
The 12th and the 13th were my 2 favorite holes on the course. The 12th a 185 yard par 3 framed in nicely with great bunkering in front and on the sides. Green has some serious tilt in it too. The 13th in a 380 par 4 up the hill with water on your left and trees on your right. Hitting in uphill green is never easy. In the fairway you have a good chance at par.
All in all Oconomowoc golf club gets my recommendation, any time you get a chance go play this place.
Tricky Greens
This would be an enjoyable course, but the greens are all crowned with subtle breaks that only the members know. If a member invites you to play there, don't be surprised if a good putt rolls off the green. They are proud that the course was designed by Donald Ross, but it's a typical Ross design that punishes good shots.
