Can beat it for the price
Can't beat it for the price! Super friendly staff, with a fun course layout! Would recommend and definitely will be returning.
Good value
I'd seen some pretty harsh reviews about The Links. Honestly, the course is not that bad, especially for the price. The area it is in is pretty bad and the layout is odd, but for $40 you can't get much better. The course was fairly well maintained, other than the range and practice green. Also it hadn't rained in weeks when we played, so the tee boxes were genuinely rock solid, no grass. Other than that, I can't really complain. It's a good bargain. It's a fun course to play.
Seemingly abandoned by ownership
I have played this track many times in years past. When in Tuscaloosa for business, I always stop by for a round. The last time I was here there was construction being done to fix the lake. It was my understanding that the were not able to access water for sprinklers for a while due to a dam breaking. This week the old guy behind the counter told me that the company does not want to pay to repair the water system and that the staff actually spends more time maintaining the apartments than they do the golf course. It is really sad to see the decay due to apparently corporate neglect. I won't be back.
Budget friendly but falls short
I try not to be too hard courses that don't have much money, however with this one I get caught in between. To begin the course is in a college apartment community that offers free play if you rent from them which means in a major university town, the incoming capital should be solid.
The course itself needs a lot of work, and it does appear they are trying to do some small projects but the potential for that course is far greater. The course was quite baked out with no sign of added water in weeks which means they should invest in the health first. The greens were burn up and untreated for grass viruses in several locations. The water locations were untreated and very stagnant which is a breeding ground for mosquitoes and snakes. The fairways did have grass on them, but were starved of course.
One of the worst factors was the pace of play. It was abysmal as they just kept pushing out players in which some had more than 5 in the group, seemingly preferential treatment to some of the university athletes it seemed as they explained they played for one of the teams there. Instead of someone from the clubhouse coming to improve pace of play, because of who they were not only did he not separate the group and speed up play, he joined and was giving them swing tips. Very unprofessional and uncaring for other paying players.
Hopefully they will be able to pump some capital into as I think it could be a really nice layout and track. However I think the leadership will need to change their focus going forward. They could be the best public muni within 30 minutes with the only other real course being private. A little discipline and elbow grease would be a game changer.
Do not play here
Literally the worst condition I’ve seen a golf course in they should have to pay you to play a round here save your money!
Not waiting a trip
Was going to travel there, 45 mins, away for a round but a buddy of mine played there a couple of days ago with one of the worst experiences. Terrible course condition, terrible management. Don't waste your time or money. Maybe they'll get the point with all the bad reviews that something needs to be done.
Poorly maintained. Tee boxes were just dirt. Greens were patchy and rough.
Best Bang for Your Buck
This course has its ups and downs, the greens are inconsistent and poor, the back course is muddy and big infested, the course layout is sloppy and far, BUT, you can get deals to play for $20 on a Sunday. Worth the price, and appropriately priced. I will be back dozens more times, I still love the course, but it’s not the best out there
Great value
Check in was quick and the staff was friendly, even going out of his way to get me a yardage book since it was my first time playing. I was paired with three members on the first tee time of the morning but they let me go alone so I finished in three hours. Nice layout, front nine and back nine had different feel - I don’t think there were any bunkers on the front and then, well, you’ll know it when you see it. The driving range and practice putting green made me think the course wouldn’t be in good shape but I was wrong. There were a few bare spots here and there and not much difference between fairway and rough but overall I think the course was in good shape and it is a links course. I would play it again.
the neighborhood kids are real meanies
My group of very good golfers played this week. We brought our stimpmeter but Gary forgot the batteries. One of the mean neighborhood kids was hiding in a bunker. He had himself all buried in there and one of his friends piled up sand to make it look like he had boobies. Nips and everything! My group and I were appalled. Never in my life have I ever seen something so vulgar. After our round the boys and I hit up the local DQ for some soft serve cones. Loser buys!! HAHAHAHAH you suck Gary
Don’t book on golf now
I booked on golf now and paid on the app, when I got to the course they informed me I needed to pay again and wouldn’t give me a solid reason why my golf now payment was invalid. As golf now does not refund I was basically forced into paying twice. The course is fine. Ok conditions. Only serious negative is that the fairways are on top of each other and at one point you essentially share a fairway. Also as we were leaving a group of local neighborhood kids were yelling at and heckling golfers. The only reason to play this course is if you want a cheap round, but with this paying twice stuff, it wasn’t cheap.
