English Turn Golf & Country Club

About
English Turn Golf & Country Club is a Jack Nicklaus design that was crafted in 1988 to host the New Orleans PGA Tour event. Nicklaus designed the course to be enjoyed equally by spectators and golfers, incorporating gallery berms and spectator mounds throughout. This challenging design is known for its undulating greens that will test even the most seasoned players. Each hole has a unique design that combines strategically placed bunkers, including large waste bunkers, and sloping grass swales. There is also carefully sculpted mounding along the edges of the fairways. On top of that, water comes into play on nearly every hole. English Turn's signature hole, the 15th, is a tricky par 5 with an island green but it's the final hole, a par 4 with water all along the left side, that is rumored to be the golf course's toughest.

Fantastic Golf Experience
The Saint Paul’s golf team had a practice round today at English Turn Country Club. The course was in amazing shape, especially the greens. The greens were very fast and true.
The entire staff was very friendly and accommodating. Mike Pizziitola, the head golf professional, was very helpful and first-class. The pro shop staff was excellent. James, the starter, is very engaging and informative. The kind lady at the snack shop next to the 9th green was fantastic.
I can’t recommend English Turn Country Club enough.
Great Value - Great Course
Course was priced adequately in comparison to other courses in the area based on what you get. Each hole is different, making the course memorable and fun for every tee shot and approach. Greens are designed in an extremely challenging way (very long and narrow) on some holes which is unique to any course in the New Orleans area. Jack Nicklaus did a very good job with the design and I would definitely play again.
One of My Favorite Courses
Love this course since it hosted the NO Open.
Big fairways but typical small and challenging Jack Nicklaus greens.
Fun. Lots of water.
Fun. Lots of water. James was an excellent starter.
Yes it’s winter, but the course is in great shape
Lovely course that literally weaves along a small river for the entire course. So, yeah, water is always in play. Greens were just right for me, not slow but not slick as ice. Fairways were in great shape given that it’s winter time and some of the grass is dormant. Nice driving range, great facilities. James the starter was awesome! He stopped and chatted with me a couple times, as I was playing solo. Asked for honest feedback. Clubhouse staff was incredibly nice as well. Overall, if I’m in the area again, I’d play it. Oh - Nicklaus and his bunker placement are a pain, but give a nice challenge. More than once I found a small hidden bunker by the green.
Course was very good condition. Staff was great…James was our starter, Kory helped load the clubs and Sue was on the drink cart.
Played in 3 hours. Outstanding job by all…great experience.
Course for the History books
Besides being known for holding the Zurich Open prior to hurricane Katrina this course is named after a historical moment in time that I found to be appealing in and of itself.
The course is not overly difficult even though there is a lot of water. The bunkers are in great shape with superb sand.
I highly recommend playing this course if you are in the area.
Nice day
Course was in winter shape. Friendly staff. Enjoyed it.
Only thing that would have made it visually better was if they overseeded. This time of year the Bermuda checks out and turns brown. This has no impact on play it’s just a visual thing.
Old English
Played here on a Tuesday morning. Nice driving range, short game area and practice green. Tulane ladies golf team was practicing on the range and a pro was giving lessons. Standard old guy starter. Went off solo, behind a two-some with 2 carts. Pace was good.
On 8 I turn around and there’s a single that somehow crept up behind me. I make the turn and grab a bloody, beer and chips for $30. Hot dogs were “unavailable”. The guy behind me has taken the liberty of playing through. That’s fine. I watch him slice his tee shot 150 into a tree.
I have been playing golf for 33 years. What happens next was heretofore inconceivable. Before I get out of my cart to tee off on 10 a guy and his teenage son pull up to the tips and tee up. I hit my tee shot and they proceed to hit theirs. Without saying anything this guy plays the hole like I’m not even there. He doesn’t let his son play. They team up with the other guy who played through without asking.
Now understand I’m a single digit handicap and will play a round in 2 1/2 hours if there’s no traffic. Pace was not the issue. Trash is the issue. Pure trash golfers ruining our sport.
Freshly punched greens that were not told to golfers until starter mentions it as you step on the first tee box. I had a hot deal tee time so wasn’t too upset, but I’d be frustrated if I paid full price.
Greens are very very small (punched the morning I was there), rough isn’t well kept, but other than those characteristics- the tee boxes and the fairways are in good shape.
1st time in 25yrs!
Very friendly pro shop and support staff. James the starter was fantastic!
Very nice course experience, until….
I played the course last week with my Brother in Law. We were both excited since the courses we wanted to play in Mississippi and Alabama had significantly gone up in price. It had rained early in the morning and the course was listed as cart path only. Since my Brother in Law was recovering from knee surgery and I was diagnosed with cancer, we asked if we could use a handicap flag and play 90 degrees. The Proshop said yes. Even though it had rained, the course dried out very nicely. Everything was fine until about the 13th hole. We came up on a Women’s Scramble Tournament. Our momentum came to a crashing halt. I realize that the Women were probably club members, and they have a right to play. It was the slow play that was bad. They were slower than molasses being poured in winter.
The course is fun to play, just ask who is in front of you when you are in the pro shop.
