Renewed golf course
We played here about 16 months ago and it was like daylight and dark. The course was ok but the greens were in shambles. Right after we played they shut the course down for the summer and redid the greens and tees. After the redo the course is one of the best in the area.
Great course
We had a great time playing, weather was perfect greens are fantastic not overly fast and I barely see ball mark. Staff are very friendly, reasonable green fee, clean golf carts and phase of play was acceptable. Fairway was in good shape for March. The course layout is challenging but fair. Highly recommended this course and will definitely do our long drive to play again.
Amazing Value
Would definitely recommend this course. Greens run true and pace of play was great
As someone whose played this course before, the greens were in horrible condition for the start of golf season in April. To make it worse, we got paired with a single that couldn’t shoot 75 on the FRONT NINE. This use to be a good track for the money, but it was an extremely disappointing experience. For a school with a turf management and pga/pgm major; extremely embarrassing!
Fun track.
Played this course while in town doing a stay and play at old waverly and mossy oak. Loved this course. Both people at the pro shop were friendly and helpful. If I was a student I would take advantage of their unlimited play price for semesters. Would love to come back and play.
Miss State course
Course was fun to play. Staff and one member were very helpful and friendly. Course wasn't busy for our 9am tee time. Greens were in need of some TLC. Maybe too early in the year for high quality there. Cart paths lined entire course from tee to green but need to be replaced/fixed. We got a hot deal thru the app.
Late January Golf
Staff was great, course was OK for Winter except for the greens and we were told that the greens were going to be redone in the spring.
Would not recommend
The greens were in terrible condition and the cart paths were very rough. The staff also overcharged me a good bit which I didnt catch until later.
Good course conditions...forgettable course layout
The course has some solid course conditions. Even in the winter when I first played the course there was definition to the fairways and smooth green surfaces. The major drawback, a very basic course layout that is very forgettable . Many of the holes are straightaway par 4s and 5s. No real strategy or thinking needed, just drive and approach. One hole, the 9th (I think, I already forgot) wraps around a lake with positioning necessary on each shot. But that's it. NO WAIT.... I also remember the very short, part 3 10th hole. I know an architect needs to put 18 holes in the space provided, but what a bummer to start the back nine on such a funky hole. With that siad, the course is playable and easy to score on but the price ($51 for 18 with a cart) suggests a much nicer course and that was a disappointment.
Good, solid, competitive course
At Mississippi State University, like almost all of the courses on my trip, I had the first tee time set up for me so I could get on the course, play rapidly and get on the road to the next state after the round. When I arrived I had a small group of people ask if they could play before me, as they regularly had the first tee time and were hoping to get their round in as quickly as possible. They promised I wouldn’t have to wait for them, and they were good on their word. Pace of play was strong beyond them as well, as all of the groups we observed after our round were coming in quickly also.
MSU was my second adventure with playing the tips and the first one where I really felt the distance on a few holes. There are some rather long approaches from the back, including the 240 yard par 3 15th which, between water and a waste area, is almost all carry. The par 5 7th is also daunting from the championship tees, but more manageable as you move forward.
I especially like a run of holes along the back, 7 through 9, which skirt a large pond and use it to protect the left hand side of the fairway. The course is not resplendent in bunkering; however, the traps they do have are placed well to keep play honest. This is clearly a course used for tournaments and up to providing the challenges they demand. It’s not the type of course where you are likely have a blow-up round (even from the very back), but scoring chances are at a premium from those tee’s nonetheless.
The course was in very good shape and (more importantly to me) the architectural design is strong. Lacking in abundant altitude change this track makes the most of the rolling hills it does have to create layout elements that force a player to consider multiple ways to attack various holes. My score did benefit a bit from a significant amount of ground under repair, as they are introducing a host new trees to the course which should improve the challenge it poses even more.
I found the staff and grounds crew accommodating and pleasant and the other patrons warm and friendly as well. Everyone seemed welcoming and glad we were visiting. MSU was a fun course to play and I would certainly make a point to take a turn at it again (especially once some of those trees come in) if I were in the area.
Very fun course to test your skill.
This course is a fun but challenging course. The fairways can be somewhat narrow, but very playable if you get into the rough. The staff are amazing. Very polite and professional.
Thank you for the review. Based on the timing of this review two weeks after you played we did start a total greens renovation. We replaced the existing grass with Tif Eagle. We hope you will come back and try it again.
