Wailea Golf Club - Old Blue Course

About
The flagship of the three golf courses at Wailea Golf Club on Maui, Blue is a classic Arthur Jack Snyder design built in 1972. The golf course rolls along the foothills of 10,000-foot-high Mt. Haleakala, a dormant volcano that dominates the skyline. This scenic Hawaiian resort-style course features both Pacific Ocean and volcano views and plays 6,545 yards from the championship tees, though each hole has three tee boxes for players of every skill level. The Blue course is close enough to the water that, from certain points like the 12th tee boxes, whales can be spotted.

Somewhat Disappointing
Maybe it is the lack of recent reviews but I do not see the Blue course as anything special. First off, there is no driving range - you get to hit from a mat into a net. No way to know what your ball flight is doing. Second, we had to start on #10, an uphill par 3 playing directly into the early morning sun. Third, the conditions are one to two steps below the Emerald course which I played two days ago. Fourth, they sent out a local foursome a half hour before their tee time and they never offered to let the singles behind them play through - and they were slow, especially on the greens. Fifth, I found a few of the holes to be a bit off. Granted, some of the land is difficult to build on but the same is true on the Emerald, which has an outstanding layout with great flow. I play the Gold tomorrow - will see if it matches the Emerald in quality.
Like Golfing on Another Planet!!!
I was initially excited to play golf on my trip to Maui, but man was this experience special. Green fees on this course compared to both the Gold and Emerald were a bit more affordable for me, so going into this round I was expecting an average experience.. man was I wrong. This course has beautiful backdrops, lush riparian areas winding around the outskirts of the course, and a few challenging approach shots into the green. While it only was just over 6800 yards from the tips, the generous fairways give the course a wide open feel, while not truly being too open, giving golfers the confidence to take the extra club and swing away! I golfed on the last day of their aeration schedule, and the greens played pure and fast. No bumps, deviations or dead spots.
While it is marketed towards being a more beginner/family friendly course, this course is nothing short of amazing for even the most avid golfer.
As a solo teeing off at 12:20 on a Friday, I completed my round in 2 hours and 39 minutes. AMAZING!!!!!
Blue Course
Beautiful course in great condition. Views from every hole. Staff was wonderful. Thanks for a great round.
Fun course to play
The easiest of the 3 at Wailea. Course is set back from the ocean. Designed to allow for play of all levels. Fairways are wide, and forgiving, so play moves along quite quickly.
Tees, greens and fairways were immaculate. Balls rolled true.
Most holes had views of the ocean and Molikini.
Wind came up on the back nine, and had to learn to hit the low punch shot into the wind. Made for a great learning experience.
Staff was very helpful and lets you go off the first tee early if you are ready.
Would love to play this course again.
Blue course. Good resort track
Generous fairways on the plus side but lots of elevated greens require one extra club or more depending on wind. Enjoyable course. Friendly on course refreshment cart. Could use a marshal to move play along. We had a slow front but the threesome ahead of us did not play the back.
Well worth playing.
Very, nice fairways, greens were big with challenging breaks, lots of sand protecting the greens, lots of uphill to challenge your club selection, a little wind that could change your club selection or direction. All in all, I had a great time
Fun course to play
Nice layout and average difficulty for a bogey golfer. Course in excellent condition and the staff was super friendly.
Beautiful views made it hard to concentrate on the golf. Great people in the clubhouse.
Great Day
It was a Wonderful experience for me a Older Golfer and Canadian to get to play in Maui. Great people great weather and lovely course.
Not the emerald or gold
If you expecting the emerald or gold type layout - this isn’t it. Be sure to know this is the course that’s close to the Marriott and shopping Center. - most golfers are looking g for the courses part the kea Lani. The course is in good shape- just not the same challenge as the other two
Great Views & Staff
Super friendly staff, fantastic views, course was in good condition. Greens rolled fine, but were a little brown in spots. I had a great time.
Great course
Excellent course with interesting layout. Facilities are excellent and staff was exceptionally helpful and courteous. Course was in great shape.
Pitiful Greens
This course has a nice enough layout and some good views. The problems with it are greens that were so thin and brown - almost “lost”...and on top of that they were recently aerated by scraping these nearly dead greens! Cup placement didn’t look like it changed in days making volcano effect around the cups.
The bunkers had no sand in them to speak of, just hard packed dirt mostly with scant sand mixed in.
The front 9 was cart path only but wasn’t very wet at all.
Worst greens I’ve played in a couple of years. They didn’t disclose the green conditions when reservation was made.
Would not play this course again.
