Great Course in Questionable Weather
Our foursome decided to meet at Canebrake Country Club disregarding predictions of lousy weather. The course has a nice practice range, and chipping/pitching area, although the practice green is a bit small. It had rained over the past few days and we were rained on briefly during the round. Naturally, the course was wet in spots, but it played fairly quite well despite wet areas, although we took drops out of any water saturated bunkers. The fairways were in good shape as were the very challenging greens. The course was getting a lot of play that day as the the temperatures were pleasant. Some players were riding (cart path only) and some players were walking, but the pace of play was very comfortable and there were no bottlenecks. The clubhouse provided some good food and drinks following our round, and overall the atmosphere was pleasant. I recommend Canebrake as an enjoyable and challenging course, and the clubhouse grill as comfortable and affordable with a good menu and well stocked bar.
Tour-quality greens
What a hidden gem in north Alabama. I had heard of this course but did not realize what a fantastic track it is! The greens are every bit as good as Tour stops that I have played. The TifEagle greens are super quick. They are also grainy, so take note of the grain before you putt. They are of good size, but you will not find tricked up green complexes. Subtle slope, the grain and the speed is where the challenge lies. This course is for the most part very open, despite many native areas of long grass. In my mind it is a second shot golf course. Be below the hole! There has been an invasion of weeds in most of the fairways and rough, and has reached the ninth green, but it doesn't detract much from the round. The course plays through a neighborhood, but isn't distracting. The par 3s are rather long and very challenging. I really enjoyed the back nine. Nos. 10 and 11 are as good of golf holes as you'll ever play. If I have to find fault with any aspect of the course it would have to be the bunkering. They didn't seem to be tended to and it isn't reflective of the overall solid quality of the course. The short game practice area is among the best I've ever seen. It is a great place to hone your game from inside 100 yards.
