Rio Hondo Golf Club

About
Located just minutes from LAX, Rio Hondo Golf Club is conveniently accessible from the South Bay and Orange County. Golf Digest has ranked the course as one of southern California's "Places to Play." The 6,370-yard layout is narrow and challenging, placing a premium on accuracy off the tee. Many locals consider it to be the toughest golf course in the area. The course features tight, tree-lined fairways and subtly contoured greens that are faster than they look. It's not a particularly long layout but the par 3s provide some good length. Golfers will face a variety of challenges throughout, but there is also plenty of scenic respite. Sparkling lakes and cascading waterfalls are scattered across the landscape, coming into play on a few holes as well. In addition to the golf course, there is also a lighted, 30-station driving range at Rio Hondo G.C.

Hidden Gem!
This was my first time playing here. I initially thought it was going to be another Los Amigos (don’t ever waste your time playing there). The course is in fantastic shape and the greens were well taken care of. Yes, you’ll run into your occasional hackers…just play past them (it’s okay, you were once new to golf yourself). Pace of play for a Saturday was not bad at all. I’d definitely play there again.
POP is terrible. Course needs some work
Pace of Play is a MAJOR issue here. Afternoon tee time took 5 hours. FIVE HOURS at a SHORT COURSE that is only 6300 yards and is FLAT with no hills!!! Embarrassing. And there are no marshals helping push everybody or help look for errant balls.
I used to think this was a decent place to play. But not any more. Not until they fix this pace of play issue, not until they educate the hacker public new to the game about etiquette and keeping up with the group in front.
Course needs work too. Some fairways are really thin, barely passable. Greens also need more rolling smoothing.
Course is only 6400 yards, guys. And it’s flat. Sure it has a couple likes and a couple of the Par 3s can be tricky. But a short course like this should take less than 4 hours. Period.
Golf courses and supers and industry minders need to rein this in. It’s getting beyond ridiculous. All they seem to care about is selling alcohol. We’re there to play golf. So take care of the pace!
Beware
Beware they have men’s tournaments being played at this course so be sure to call beforehand and make sure your tee time isn’t aligned with the men’s tourney.
The pro shop doesn’t inform the golfers about this so be prepared to play a 6+ hour round.
If you don’t mind then this course is for you!
fun course
Rio Hondo is a fun course in the LA area that generally has decent greens. Sadly, a tournament was before us, and we teed off about 40 minutes after our scheduled tee time. A group of golfers betting in front of us played very slowly.
Nice course surrounded by busy city
Coming from La Crescenta it took about 50 minutes which was mostly traffic due to my 9:50 tee time. When I finished in about 4.5 hours, it took the same amount of time to get home which was all in traffic. My round made me forget the hassle getting there. I don’t mind driving an hour to play a round, but it is the traffic that takes away my eagerness to go back. You’re fortunate if you live close by.
Good tee time, weak body!
Hello fellow duffers:
I had an especially good time today playing with my 2 sons, Paul and Steven, both retired.
It was cold and breezy, so I kept my jacket on.
Enjoyable Round, Despite the Rain
I liked the layout of the course. The course was in good condition. I would definitely return.
4th group waiting on second par 3
The back to back par 3's on the front nine, kills the pace of play. We were the fourth group waiting on the 8th hole.
Terrible pace. Was fourth group waiting on Par 3 eighth hole!
The back to back Par 3s on the front nine kill the pace is f play!
It’s Just Ok
Definitely not worth the money The course itself is just ok at best it really you too be a good course the too many people have ruined it and there charging Way too much money for a course that used too be nice and that’s not right …..
Rio Slow Down
I love playing this course as it has 2 halves that are challenging, front, scoring, back. Unfortunately the pace of play is crazy now at 5+hours.
Fix is simple with a starter like Los Verdes did. Takes 1 minimum wage retired golfer to manager hole 1 and the rest takes care of itself. 3 or 4 groups on 1 guarantees a standstill by the back to back par 3's!
GolfNow needs to remove these fake reviews written by the people who work at the place to try to promote their own place. Ridiculous
