What a treat to play on closing day!
I had been forewarned about the condition of the fairways, but my time was limited and I was looking to play 18 prior to 11:00am. Little did I know I would have this entire course to myself on closing day! The fairways were brown, but the dormant kikuyugrass played firm & fast and still offered good lies. But the greens were simply magnificent! What a great layout this must have been back in the day, and it was both an honor and a privilege to be among the last to play there.
Had I known...
This course is under reconstruction. All fairway and tee boxes do not have grass making play near impossible. Greens are also under kept and inconsistent. I thought I was getting a good deal and drove an hour to find the course in the condition it was in. I'm sure once it's reconstructed it will be great.
this course is fairway worst
I will never again play
Because. Fairway gless is all dead
Only try green!
This is a really hard course!
This is a really hard course with forced carries and really tight fairways. It was complicated by the course conditions. There was no grass in the rough areas, and even some of the fairways had no grass. They are discounting the price because of the conditions, and it's still not worth the price. There is no restaurant, only a snack shack.
The only good point is the greens are in good shapes.
Last Time at Malibu
I have played Malibu Golf Club many times in the past. The fairways were TOTALLY Brown and basically Unplayable. The greens were decent. The overall clubhouse was fair. My understanding is that they are getting ready to put a bunch of money into the clubhouse. They definitely need it on the course. I would NOT go back out there even if it were free. The golf course is NOT being well maintained AT ALL..Not sure how others would even want to play this course..
Terrible conditions, don't waste your money
They haven't watered this in months. Hard pan dirt everywhere. Only the greens are nice. Don't go.
Challenging Course but Completely Dried Out
Malibu GC is getting crushed by the CA drought which is unfortunate because it has a lot of promise. They are keeping the greens green but the rest of the course is brown (not an exaggeration). A lot of elevation changes and it's definitely a challenge to get around without any course knowledge for the first time player but each cart comes loaded with a booklet with hole lay-outs and guidance to help you out.
If we get some rain, I'll definitely come back to give it another shot. In the meantime, they should consider giving the tee boxes as much love as the greens. Hitting driver/woods off sand/dirt/small rocks makes you cringe.
The course just destroyed.
I don't understand how and who decided to destroy one of the most beautiful golf courses in the area. Seems to me they don't have money to pay their water bill.
With all this drought troubles the most of the courses manage to keep their fairways green, but Malibu golf course turned the fairways into some kind of cracked desert like dirt.
Don't go there even for $25, nor for $10. Terrible and depressing
Grass is all brown
I understand they are redoing this course from scratch that will take two years to complete. For that reason they have totally let it go. Fairways are brown. They are still charging $60 a round. We complained and they gave us 1/2 our money back.
you have a month or so to play this course...
and you really should before the 'redesign' starts and the course is closed for 2 years. I played today and the conditions were bad. The fairways were yellow or dead grass and even dirt patches but the greens were good. This is the last time you'll get to play this Bell family design - the Bells are famous in California for their courses such as Torrey Pines Industry Hills Ojai Valley Inn and spa & Buena Ventura to name a few. The redesign plans to make it a more 'user friendly' course (I guess that means lessoning the slope) and to enhance the facilities. Despite the terrible fairways we still had a good time and shot in the 80s. Play it while you can as the bell design dies to be resurrected, we hope.
fantastic layout, back in the day... had to be great
Really quite a golf course, with tee box elevations, winding thru the canyons, very pleasant golf course to play.
I had always heard such great things about this course.
I was quite disappointed. I found it amazingly dry and now so well cared for... I was surprised after all the good I had heard about this course. Maybe it is a tough season and I should try again in the near future.
BAD
they need to tell you everything is dead, except the greens?
Help. Needs water!
This course hasn't seen water or basic maintenance in at least a year.
Fairways are basically dead
We didn't know until we arrived. The pro shop staff let us know the conditions were extremely dry. The fairways basically had no grass, completely brown and dead due to drought conditions in southern California. If I had known the conditions were that bad I would not have booked a round.
Drought Conditions
The fairways had clearly not been watered in weeks; they were yellow, blotchy and dead. Greens were in good shape, but the conditions of the fairways and tee boxes just took all the joy out of the game. Better off spending your money elsewhere, especially with all the choices of courses within driving distance of Malibu.
This course needs help!!
NIce course, very hilly. Lots of greens up on plateaus, side-hill lies, intimidating tee shots. Greens excellent, very true, speed medium, large greens for a smaller course. But the fairways and tee boxes are in tough shape. There's a fair amount of just plain dirt...no grass, not even dead grass. The cart paths are pretty beat, broken up in some places. Bunkers just hard packed sand, not cared for. So simple maintenance issues are pretty poor. It's a nice course but must be hurting financially?
I paid $60 on a Sunday AM, so can't complain too much.
California Drought Effect to Golf Couse
There's a small lake that can be used to water and recycle the drained water if proper system is installed.
Malibu Country Club Going Out of Business
Over the past 15 years I have played Malibu Golf Club many times. It has been a couple of years since I've played there and it was my last! The fairways haven't been watered in months and the grass is dead. Many tee boxes had no grass at all. I chose this course because of the way it used to look and play. This round was a birthday gift for two of my closest friends and I was truly embarrassed! So Long!!!!!
