University of South Florida Golf Course - The Claw
About
Editor's Note: Course closed for business in 10/2023.
The newly renovated Claw at USF, named thus for its many doglegged fairways, offers a distinct layout that seamlessly winds through moss draped oaks and towering pines on pristine Florida preservation land. You will enjoy the fact that there are no houses crowding the fairways. Located at the University of South Florida, this manicured course is home to alligators, deer, turkeys and many other rare inhabitants. You will feel like you are playing in the heart of a nature preserve. "The Claw" is also home to the nationally ranked men's and women's USF Golf Teams. Elevated greens and new Tif-Dwarf putting surface, will test your finesse and shot making ability.

Conditions deteriorating
We used to play here frequently, but the conditions are deteriorating severely. On our most recent visit, several of the tee boxes had no grass at all, there were numerous bare spots and infilled divots in the fairways, and large areas with no grass on about half of the greens. On a positive note, the sand in the bunkers was the best I’ve seen at any of the area courses. The course has potential, but is in desperate need of new management.
This course needs some work
The greens need lots of work, the fairways are poor ,and some tee box's have little to no grass on them. USF should be embarrassed there name is on that course
This course needs some work
The collage should be embarrassed at the condition of this course ,some tee boxes were very bad others just soso the greens need lots of work I played with another guy that was also disappointed , Its sad to see any course in bad shape
What a shame.....
There was a time when The Claw was in excellent condition with the greens/fairways/teeboxes and bunkers all well maintained. There was a pro shop with equipment and shoes/clothing neatly displayed. The restaurant/bar was well stocked and resonably priced. Fast forward to now.....The course is a disgrace, the restaurant/bar are closed and there is no pro shop. The carts are old gas type and are sometimes filthy. There are a few greens that are still good, but the majority are riddled with bare areas and pock marks. Tee boxes are beyond awful. USF should be ashamed of this poor excuse for a golf course. My sympathy to the members of their golf team.
The Claw
Most of the reviews for this course are true. I dont really have the right words to describe how bad it is. If you want to have a place where you can play golf and putt for fun then this is the place. Some tee boxes are just dirt and sand. Fairways are wet and zero grass. Greens are okay for almost the whole layout 2-3 have bad spots. The layout is pretty good with some hard holes as well. I last played it almost 10 years ago and it has really gone way downhill, Sad to see it really. Dont waste your money
Great value
Not expensive and not Augusta enjoyed the day with great staff and all players we ran into were friendly
Great course for relief from big $ courses in winter
We especially loved the pace (never waited once) and the friendliness of people working there. USF clearly lacks funds to improve conditions, but many greens were decent (but some had some big bad spots). In winter there are few places with reasonable prices, so we found it to be a fun course for the money (& quite challenging) and the doglegs weren't annoying like name 'Claw" might suggest. If you need a budget stretcher mid winter while still getting out to play, this is a good choice.
Bad
Such a nice layout.its a shame they can't or won't fix this course back to shape.Used to be a nice place to go play.i go back every 6-8 months to check and see if they fix it up and again they have done Nothing to it..Greens were terrible again the same or even worse then the last time I was there.
Birthday golf
A great day with family and friends. Course was wet but quite playable, greens were decent except for one or two. Pro shop is in a small trailer which we weren’t expecting
LAST TIME
PRICE WAS GOOD. GOAT RANCH. LAYOUT WASN'T BAD, HOWEVER BECAUSE OF LACK OF MAINTENANCE THE TREES WERE OUT OF CONTROL MAKING THE THE COURSE VERY NARROW AND THE LACK OF GRASS IN MANY AREAS. WHEN YOU HAVE A LOT OF DOGLEGS THE COURSE NEEDS TO BE OPENED UP . i CAN'T BELIEVE THAT USF STILL HAS THEIR NAME ON IT.
