San Tan Highlands (formerly known as The Golf Club at Johnson Ranch) boasts a championship course with a front nine that winds through the Sonoran desert and a back nine that finishes at the base of the bordering San Tan Mountains. Naturally, the first half of the golf course is relatively flat and the latter half has a hilly terrain. In contrast to its categorization as a desert course, this course has grass from the tees to the greens but the cactus-filled landscape definitely implies desert. The greens are quite large and undulating and the fairways are fairly open with generous landing areas. Strategically placed sand bunkers and water hazards come into play throughout the San Tan Highlands.

Enjoyed

Nice course & interesting layout.
Staff is very friendly
Unfortunately the turn was not well managed and after a nice hour & 50 minute front nine, there was a 25 minute wait on Ten which led to the back nine taking over two and half hours.

Overall

Fairways were stressed. Greens rolled well, however, very slow. Pace of play, well, 5 hours. Staff before and after round were nice. Lady at the bar was nice as well.

Great views

The course was in good condition. The fairways were a little dry but the greens were in great condition and are rolling at a good pace

Fun layout and great staff!

This was my second time playing at San Tan Highlands. The first time I only played the front 9 and the staff really hyped up the back 9. Played 18 my second time and WOW they weren’t kidding! Beautiful Mountain View’s and great challenging but fun layout on the back. Great value for 18 holes as well for a 3:15 tee time. Had no issues with pace of play, finished in about 3:40. We did see two rattlesnakes on the back 9, keep your eyes peeled! I will definitely be returning.

San Tan Highlands

Had a 12:02 tee time and actually went off at 11:48. Not too busy this time of year so we got around in about 3:40.
Course was in nice shape for this time of year. Fairways ok, greens consistent if not a bit slow, but that’s to be expected with the hot weather coming. Back nine really fun with multiple elevation changes through the foothills.
Over all a fun course to play.

Course Feedback

I played on a beautiful Sunday May 4th so it was busy and running a little behind which is ok and the starter was all over it. Took us 2 1/2 to play front 9 which is a little much but the back 9 which is shorter took us the same. We had a group in front of us which should not have been there jacking around hitting multiple balls so called twice to the shop and a an answering service took the calls so pro shop did not get calls. After numerous years, problem remains that this clueless owner has NOBODY out on course but continues putting a message on the cart to keep pace with group in front of you but no one monitors it. The course is great but it is NOT a 5 hour course and the pro inside did not care with my concerns so if you are not in a hurry and want to spend a full day playing, San Tan Highlands is for you but don’t expect any help on play which is a shame…

Course is in okay shape, not great. Twilight rate should probably be less based on the condition. Greens were very dry and slow, sand compact, fairways and tee boxes need work as well.
