Black Horse at Bayonet/Black Horse Golf Course

About
Following a $13 million renovation at this 36-hole former military facility, Black Horse Golf Course was not only dramatically improved, but now comparable to its more revered sister course, Bayonet. Black Horse has long been considered the easier of the two, but that's not exactly a given now with the improvements and lengthening by golf course architect Gene Bates. Its serrated bunkers may be a little easier to get out of than the cavernous craters on Bayonet, and the fairways are little more generous, but Black Horse makes up for it with more undulating and difficult greens. The renovation also opened up the views to Monterey Bay for both courses. Trees were trimmed, and both courses now have an overall cleaner look, especially with the latest bentgrass turf from tee to green.

Little brother beats big brother
Bayonet has always held the top spot of this two course complex. After playing, however, I must say I like this one better. Shot selection is more varied, condition was better and greens were more challenging. In the middle of our year end trip to Monterey I rate this course third, so far, behind only Poppy Hills and Pebble Beach! A wonderful day on the course!
Beautiful challenging course
I was in a foursome that was playing too slow, they had to let 2 groups go in front of us. That was the only bad part of my experience
Excellent course, great service
I do not recommend this course for beginners! Very challenging, and very deep roughs if you happen to miss the fairway with your drive! Conditions are very good, both in the fairways and on the greens!
PGA Feel Fore an Affordable Price
This was a great experience and would recommend every time someone is looking for a course in the Monterey area. Amazing views, felt like I was playing a PGA quality course, very undulated and unique to most courses, greens very tough but made the play unique. Pace of play was normal (4hr round), on a weekday it felt about 70% capacity. Practice facility will get you ready for the round. Overall loved the round and looking forward to the next.
Bane and black horse never disappoint
I have moved to the Monterey area and you have some of the greatest choices of golf courses in the world, but you can’t beat black horse and bait for course conditions. Value and outstanding staff pay of plays great and the course conditions have never been better a must play either side of the track Being it always used to be better than black horse, but I’ll tell you black horses now in the same league
Very nice but
Beautiful course and very long with lots of sand traps. The fairways were relatively wide open with room for error. Course conditions weren’t the greatest since I believe there were heavy rains in the days before we played causing many toppled trees and soggy/irregular greens. I also personally like have water features on a course but this one doesn’t have any with big expansive areas of dirt/sand.
Lots of sand areas
Haven’t played here in a few years. There is a lot of construction. Houses being built but did not interfere with the game. There was an extensive amount of sandy areas which were very expensive. All in all the course was fun to play and I would do it again.
Outstanding fairways and greens
The course conditions were outstanding. The fairways and greens were impeccable. The sand bunkers were well maintained. There was a good variety of challenging holes. Reasonable number of bunkers and a few greens had multiple levels which I struggled with maintaining my average score. There were no water features. Practice facilities were nice as was the clubhouse. Maybe a couple of things I didn’t expect. There were large expansive areas along the side of the fairways with sand. The construction of new homes were in progress adjacent to four holes. Although they appear to be nearing completion.
A real plus was the hillside location where from several holes you get a great view of Monterey Bay in the distance.
Awesome time
I wish I hot the club house after the ninth whole but the view of the ocean was amazing and the greens were amazing
Beautiful Morning @ Blackhorse
I have played this course many times and have never seen it in better condition from tee to green. Bunkers are well maintained and consistent. I had an 8AM tee time as a single on a Tuesday morning and was able to play in 3 hours riding. The staff was very friendly and accommodating (from the pro shop, starter and on-course beverage service). You can pay a lot more for golf in Monterey, but you won't have a better experience.
Slippery slope
Course is in great shape. The difficulty begins on the greens. Fast with subtle not so subtle breaks. We pretty much had a putt-a-thon the whole day.
Great course
Great course! Playing partner broke hand on 7th hole and credit wasn’t issued due to injury.
Excellent Course
I really enjoyed playing Black Horse. The greens were very challenging and the fairways were like greens. I would highly recommend this course.
Outstanding
Everything about the experience was 5 star. Outstanding! Too bad they are building houses on many of the holes, but otherwise as good as any other 5 star course out there.
Beautiful Course
The course is beautiful to look at and play! Everything done to the course is first class! The only draw back is the extensive amount of sand outside of the sand traps! It’s nice to save water in unnecessary lawn areas but you got carried away. Also you need to loosen up on the electronic sensors seemingly not placed in less strategic areas! Even traveling near dirt areas seemed to set them off! Ugh!
