The highly popular El Campeon Course at Mission Inn Resort consistently ranks in the top 10 of Florida's many golf courses. The course originally opened in 1917 and decades later in 1992, it was joined by a second 18-hole course, Las Colinas. El Campeon is not only one of the state's oldest golf courses but also one of its most challenging. The traditional design remains largely unchanged except for a renovation in 1926. The course winds through towering forests and numerous spring-fed lakes. The layout features water on thirteen holes as well as dramatic elevation changes that measure over 85 feet across the rolling fairways and undulating greens. The signature hole of the golf course is the par-5 17th. This lengthy double dogleg possesses more hazards than some entire courses do.

El Campeon is Muy Muy Bueno

Challenging and beautiful course that was a pleasant surprise in the middle of the countryside in Central Florida and built in 1917. Challenging layout, tight greens and a very accommodating staff with the latest golf cart technology. Will definitely play again.

Poor pace of play

Once again no golf etiquette from other players. Had a foursome in front of me and they were terrible but would not let me play through. A marshal to keep pace would be nice.
Other than that the course itself is great. Nice layout and challenging and very picturesque.
Staff is great and friendly. They just need to remind players of proper etiquette and let faster players play through.

Always a treat

Such a great, challenging layout. Greens were in summer shape and a little bumpy but imagine they’ll be tightened up as we eventually ease into fall

Pretty aged

Nice layout. Difficult to play. The course exists for more than hundred years. A lot of maintenance work was under way, but still not sufficient. There is a lot to be worked on.

Cart did not a a have cooler on board.

Hoping for more

First and foremost, I played this course for the 2nd time in more than a year. The layout is wonderful and fare. You hit it where you’re suppose to and you can put up a good score. I had an early tee time and a single, and there was no starter and the cart employee wasn’t even around. Picked a cart from the general area and checked in. The employee said to hand my receipt to the attendant, I told her there was nobody out there. Didn’t take long for some one to help me .
The range balls were crap for $9 bucks for a small bucket (not worth it). Then they proceeded to put me behind (single) a woman foursome. They eventually let me through.

If you looking for a decent course and willing to spend $75 bucks, play it. If you’re looking for a golf experience skip it.

Where's the Water?

The course is currently undergoing renovations. It seems the staff has let that be an excuse to not repair damage to fairways, not drag and smooth bunkers, and to leave the rough cut so thick you can't see your ball when standing over it. Once again, renovations are happening so I can let that go and would be interested to see it in daily or tournament conditions.

What I cannot let go and why I would not recommend this to a friend is the complete lack of water or concessions while on the course. There are water fountains straight out of an elementary school from the 1990s that dispense a yellowish-brown water at a tepid 80 degrees. The water coming from the faucet at the two on-course restrooms is a milky white that looks like it shouldn't even be used to wash your hands, much less drink. Each restroom building also has a Pepsi vending machine that shows buttons for Gatorade or Aquafina...both of which were not even powered on. Finally, I saw a beverage cart parked at the cart barn, however it never made it's way around the course. Unfortunately, the course is a 1917 design so it is a true 9 out, 9 in experience where the turn does not happen at the clubhouse/restaurant.

It's Florida, in July. It was 96 degrees, humid, and sunny. The absolute lack of water or any sort of concessions made me quit after 9 holes. I got this tee time at 50% off on a hot deal and would say AVOID at all costs paying full price.. The renovations and lack of maintenance make a hard course impossible to play and the lack of water made it downright uncomfortable if not dangerous to play during the summer.

Course is undergoing an extensive irrigation rebuild, and there was constant noise from groundskeeper maintenance (leaf blowers, mowers, you name it -- even one guy on a tractor hauling an industrial blow dryer up and down several of the fairways as I was playing them). Hole #14 is completely closed for the irrigation work, and it looks like hole #5 will be next. All that being said, it was still in great shape overall and, as always, very challenging tee to green. Well worth the Hot Deal I got.

Course under repair

Even though the course was getting some
major hole upgrades and had recently been
dressed it’s still the scenic challenge we look
forward to playing.
The rate for 18 was more than fair considering
the few diversions we had to take for the repairs.

Disappointing Experience

Upon checking in I was informed the 7th hole was closed for a construction project…no problem. What wasn’t mentioned was that the greens had been recently punched and sanded. Range balls, not included, pay. Water on the carts…nope, pay. A 17 hole golf course with bumpy sandy greens and they can’t throw in a small bucket of range balls or put a couple of bottles of water in the cart. It’s July in Florida!! I’d heard good things about the course but I guess management isn’t paying attention. Lastly, they could have made #7 a par 3, the construction was all in the first half of the hole. Cart staff was terrific
